Whales will live on
It’s sad to learn that a whale has died in the ocean. However, that’s not the end for the whale. It has a lot to give to other sea animals after death.
When a whale dies, it quickly sinks(下沉)to the bottom of the ocean floor. There, the whale carcass(尸体)provides food and nutrients(营养)to deep-sea animals, which are often starved(饥饿的)for food. The remains can last for decades and create a complex(复杂的)ecosystem(生态系统)called a whale fall—an “oasis” of life in the deep sea.
Chinese scientists found a whale fall for the first time in the South China Sea during a deep-sea expedition(考察)carried out by oceanic research vessel(舰)Tansuo-1, which finished its expedition on April 2, 2020. Tansuo-1 carried the manned submersible(潜水器)Shenhai Yongshi, which is able to dive to a depth of 4,500 meters.
The whale fall ecosystem can exist in the deep ocean because great pressure and cold temperatures there prevent the body from decomposing(分解)too quickly. But the depth also makes it hard for scientists to discover them. There are less than 50 known whale falls in the world.
The whale fall in the South China Sea is about three meters long. Scientists have found several species(物种)of shrimp(虾)and fish near the whale fall. Some fish have started to eat the whale’s tail. The whale fall might be quite recent and needs long-term observation(观察), according to Xie Wei, a scientist who took part in the expedition.
By studying the whale fall, scientists can better understand how marine(海洋的)ecosystems support life and how to protect biodiversity(生物多样性)resources in the deep sea.
26.What does the underlined word “oasis” mean in the second paragraph
A.A nice place for sea animals to play happily.
B.A pleasant place for deep-sea animals to support life.
C.A huge hall for sea animals to stay comfortably.
D.A place with different plants for deep-sea animals.
27.Which statement is TRUE about the whale fall
A.Chinese scientists found a whale fall for the second time in the South China Sea.
B.It is very easy for scientists to find the whale falls in the deep sea.
C.The scientists will continue observing the whale fall found in the South China Sea.
D.Chinese scientists have found more than 50 whale falls by now.
28.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.The whales. B.The scientists. C.The deep-sea animals. D.The whale falls.
29.Why do scientists study the whale fall
A.To find what will happen after a whale dies in the sea.
B.To find more species of shrimps and fishes in the deep sea.
C.To know the sea better and try to protect it in a better way.
D.To save the whales because there are only 50 whales now.
30.What is the passage mainly about
A.A whale fall discovered in the South China Sea.
B.Whale falls existing in the whole world.
C.Marine ecosystems supporting the life in the sea.
D.Biodiversity resources in the deep sea.
四、阅读判断
You are invited to a large party. Loud music is playing, and lots of people are dancing. Do you dance or talk to as many people as you can call all night Later, you cannot fall asleep—you want more conversations! Or do you prefer a quieter corner Or perhaps you cannot wait to go home early and relax by yourself.
Which of these people sound most like you Person A, who tries to talk to everyone and stays late Or Person B, who prefers to keep quiet and leaves early
If you said Person A, you are probably more extroverted (外向的). If you said Person B, you are probably more introverted (内向的). Or perhaps you are Person C and fall somewhere in the middle. Introverted and extroverted people are two commonly used words to describe a person’s personality. And they are also commonly misused (误用) and misunderstood (误解).
Introverts may be thought as quiet, shy and timid (胆小的). Extroverts may be thought as brave, confident, loud and full of energy. Introverted and extroverted people may fit those descriptions. But these same descriptions do not define (定义) introversion and extroversion properly.
Introverts and extroverts use their brains differently, and they get their energy differently. Introversion is connected with one’s own mental (精神) life. Extroversion is the opposite. Extroversion is connected with what is outside oneself.
People who consider themselves introverts may say they “need to be alone to charge their batteries (充电)”. However, introverts may still live being social and going to parties. But such activities require time to prepare.
Extroverts may say, “I don’t need ‘alone time’, I feel more relaxed being around other people.” Even so, extroverts can still feel unsure or not confident among other people.
根据短文内容,判断句子正(T)、误(F)。
31.If Person B is invited to a large party, he will prefer a quieter corner and go home early.
32.According to the passage, everyone must be extroverted or introverted.
33.The three words in this passage are used to describe introverts are quiet, shy and timid.
34.Introverts don’t need time to prepare for going to the parties.
35.Extroverts usually make themselves relaxed by staying around other people.
