Phoenix, Arizona, the USA was shaken by a big sandstorm recently. It was a huge dust storm that struck Phoenix a little after 7:00 p.m. local time.
Arizona has sandstorms particularly during the monsoon(季风) season which usually starts from mid-June until the end of September. However, this was so far the biggest. The cloud of dust turned day into night. Some trees were downed, gardens were destroyed and it cut off power for thousands of local people along the area, but luckily no death happened. A number of the people’s pools became dirty with dust. People who lived in Phoenix for more than 40 years said that this was the first time they had experienced this huge dust storm. It could greatly influence people’s health.
The big dust cloud started in Tucson traveling north across the desert. The huge storm ran up to the 60 miles per hour. It was more than 100 miles wide and a mile high. Besides Phoenix and nearby cities, the storm also reached Yuma area in southwestern and far western Arizona. It reduced the visibility (能见度) in these areas, putting off the flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
The storm only takes place in Arizona, the Sahara Desert and areas of the Middle East, because of the dry environment and large amounts of sand. Because of the serious shortage of rain, there’s a large possibility that the water is polluted because of the storm.
21.In what season do sandstorms usually take place in Arizona
A.In fall and winter B.In summer and fall
C.In winter and spring D.In spring and summer
22.The underlined word “this” in Paragraph2 refers to ________.
A.the storm B.the wind
C.the desert D.the state
23.It is fortunate that though the big sandstorm happened, __________.
A.people’s health was not influenced
B.it didn’t do harm to people’s gardens
C.all the local people in the area survived
D.the electricity power was not at all affected
24.Sandstorms take place in Arizona as a result of ________.
A.its severe dryness and lots of sand B.its being too far away from the sea
C.its being close to the Sahara Desert D.its looking like areas of the Middle East
25.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.Phoenix, Arizona has more sandstorms.
B.Sandstorms do a great deal of harm to people
C.We must do something to prevent sandstorms.
D.Phoenix, Arizona experienced a huge sandstorm.
The Arctic is a polar region. It surrounds the North Pole.
Like Antarctica, the Arctic is a land of ice and snow. Antarctica holds the record for a low temperature reading -125 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. Reading of 85 degrees below zero is common in Antarctica. Winter temperatures average 30 degrees below zero in the Arctic. At the South Pole the winter average is about 73 degrees below zero.
One thing alone makes it almost impossible for men to live in Antarctica and in parts of the Arctic. This one thing is the low temperature — the killing chill of far North and the polar South.
To survive, men must wear the warmest possible clothing. They must build windproof shelters. They must keep heaters going at all times. Not even for a moment can they be unprotected against the below zero temperatures.
Men have a way of providing for themselves. Polar explorers wrap themselves in warm coats and furs. The cold makes life difficult. But the explorers can stay alive.
What about animals Can they survive Do we find plants Do we find life in the Arctic and in Antarctica Yes, we do. There is life in the oceans. There is life on land.
Antarctica, as we have seen, is a cold place indeed. But this has not always been the case. Expedition (探险) scientists have discovered that Antarctica has not always been a frozen continent. At one time the weather in Antarctica may have been much like our own.
Explorers have discovered coal in Antarctica. This leads them to believe that Antarctica at one time was a land of swamps and forests. Heat and moisture must have kept the trees in the forests alive.
26.The lowest temperature that man has ever known was recorded ________.
A.in Antarctica B.in the Arctic
C.at the North Pole D.in the polar region
27.The main reason why it is almost impossible for men to live in the Arctic and Antarctica is that ________.
A.they are frozen
B.they are wasted
C.there are no life there
D.they are extremely cold
28.Polar explorers can stay alive there because they ________.
A.stay inside the building there
B.have their own way to keep warm
C.are stronger than other people
D.have no heaters and windproof shelters
29.What’s the main idea of the passage
A.The Arctic is colder than Antarctica.
B.The history of the Arctic and Antarctica.
C.The discovery in the Arctic and Antarctica.
D.The environmental features in polar regions.
“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, “it means just what I choose to mean — neither more nor less.”
— THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
I agree with Mr. Dumpty: Words have meaning. But surely we can seize upon a meaning and then create a word to match it. The following words-some culled from the crowdsourced online dictionary urban dictionary.com and others I’ve concocted myself-don’t exist according to Merriam-Webster...but should I call them “worderfuls”.
blamestorming n. — The act of attempting to identify the person who is most at fault for a plan’s failure.
cellfish n. — Someone who talks on the phone to the exclusion of those he or she is with.
chairdrobe n. — A chair on which one piles clothes that belong in the closet. Not to be confused with a floordrobe.
chiptease n. — A bag of potato chips that seems full but is mostly air.
dullema n. — The choice between two equally boring outcomes.
epiphinot n. —An idea that seems like an amazing insight to the conceiver but is in fact pointless, mundane, stupid, or incorrect.
errorist n. — Someone who is repeatedly or invariably wrong.
nonversation n. — A completely meaningless or useless conversation.
pregret v. — To know what you’re about to do is wrong, wrong, wrong while also knowing you will do it anyway.
unlighten v. — To learn something that makes you dumber.
30.According to the writer, “worderfuls” refer to words ________.
A.that are collected by online dictionaries
B.that already exist but have a new meaning
C.that are made up to match certain meanings
D.that have been included in Merriam-Webster
31.Which of the following words can be illustrated by the picture below
A.blamestorming B.chairdrobe C.chiptease D.errorist
32.Which of the following words best fits the blank in the sentence: Since you ________ to go abroad, why on earth do you choose to go to France
A.cellfish B.nonversation C.pregret D.unlighten
Up to now, UNESCO has granted official recognition to over 800 cultural sites that are thought to be of special significance to human history and culture. Among them are the following four.
The Taj Mahal
It was built between 1631 and 1648, known as a masterpiece of architecture. It took over 20,000 workers and 1,000 elephants to complete the project. In the early 17th century, an emperor named Shah Jahan ruled India. The emperor loved his wife Mumtaz so much that when she died, he built the Taj Mahal in her memory. The beautiful mausoleum was designed to look like what the emperor hoped would be Mumtaz's home in the afterlife.
The Temple and Mansion of Confucius
Located in Qufu, Shandong Province, the temple is a memorial to Confucius, the Chinese great educator. On the grounds, there are more than 900 halls and rooms. But the building that people visit most is the Temple of Confucius. Originally built in 478 B.C, the temple has been rebuilt many times. Besides the temple, visitors can enjoy the grounds outside, where there are more than 1,000 stone tablets and over 100, 000 tombs.
The Imperial Tombs of the Qing and Ming Dynasties
Built by several emperors between 1368 and 1915 in Beijing, Hubei, Hebei and Liaoning, the Imperial Tombs represent Chinese cultural and historical values that have been handed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. What makes them unique even among amazing buildings such as Angkor Wat and the Cologne Cathedral is that they bring together architecture and philosophy.
The Terracotta Army
In 1974, while digging a well, some Chinese farmers accidentally found a tomb, where they found more than 8,000 statues. They were said to be made in the third century BC to guard the tomb of the Chinese Emperor Qinshihuang! More than 700,000 people worked for nearly 40 years to build this tomb! It is recognized as one of the greatest archaeological findings in the world.
33. ________ can be viewed as a labor of love.

One Wednesday, many years ago, when I was working as a psychologist (心理医生) at a children's institution in England, a boy showed up in the waiting room. I went out there where he was walking up and down uneasily.
I showed him into my office and pointed to the chair on the other side of my desk. It was in late autumn, and most trees outside the window had lost all their leaves. "Please sit down," I said.
David wore a black rain coat that was buttoned all the way up to his neck. His face was pale, and he stared at his feet while wringing his hands nervously. He lost his father in a car accident 3 years ago. Before he came, his head teacher called and told me, "After his father's death, the boy becomes very sad and depressed. He refuses to talk to others or attend any activities or clubs. He has no social life at all. However, when his father was alive, the boy was active and talkative. After school, they would play chess games happily!"
I looked at David. How could I help him Perhaps the best thing I can do is to listen openly and to be there for him. But I am still not sure what to do.
David didn't say a word, and only looked at the children's drawings on the wall behind me. As he was about to leave, I put my hand on his shoulder. He didn't step back, but he didn't look at me either. "Come back next week this time, if you like," I said. I hesitated a bit. Then I said, "I know it hurts."
Finally, he came and I took out a set of chess.

As this is a cultural exchange program, I’d like to talk briefly about Chinese traditional culture, especially Chinese painting. Chinese painting is an enduring art form with a two-thousand-year history. Compared to Western oil painting, it’s usually done on rice paper or thin silk, using various brushes and black ink or colored pigments. We’re planning several visits to our city’s art galleries and then you can see for yourself.
I hope you’ll enjoy the activities we have organized.
Thank you.

Another Wednesday, David appeared with a box of chocolate, smiling brightly. I walked towards him and we hugged.
