“Whaaaat’s uppppp ” Did you see anyone write like this Now more and more
kids are using these kinds of words in phone messages or other online messages.
These kinds of words are called “stretchable” words (可拉伸单词).
Younger people especially like using stretchable words because these words seem
playful and interesting. They are interested in the new and creative spelling of words.
Also, stretchable words can help them to show strong feelings without the use of
emojis (表情符号).
For example, one of the most common stretchable words is “ha”. Because it’s
short, it can be easily stretched. If something is just a little funny, you might just type
4
“haha”. But if something is really funny, you might type “hahahahaha”.
Another example is “yeeeesssss”. When you type “yes”, it might sound like you
are just fine with an idea. But if you use “yeeeesssss”, it shows that you are very
excited about it.
Tyler Gray, a teacher in a university, studies how people use stretchable words
online. The title of his article, “Hahahahaha, Duuuuude, Yeeessss!” has three different
examples of stretchable words.
Although stretchable words are popular online, many parents and teachers don’t
want children to use them too often. They think the stretchable words may make a

necessary in school. So if you like using them when talking with friends, remember
