Most 5-year-olds are just learning to read and write but one little girl from the UK has actually written a book that was published in January, 2022.
Bella-Jay Dark from Weymouth is the world’s youngest female to be published and was awarded the title by Guinness World Records. Her book, The Lost Cat tells the story of Snowy, a cat who got lost after going outside alone at night. Bella hopes the book will teach children not to go outside at night alone.
While many adult writers find inspiration for their books from life experiences, Bella’s creative vision actually came from one of her drawings. “It started off as a picture. My dad also agreed I could make a book and a story coming from the picture,” Bella told Guinness World Records.
Bella’s deciding to write a book wasn’t astounding to her mom, Chelsie Syme, who said that her daughter had been writing short stories since age three. Bella spent around five days writing the story and did all of the illustrations(插图) except for one picture that her older sister Lacie May drew.
Syme hadn’t expected the book turned out as well as it did. “I thought it would just be some scribble(涂鸦),” she said. “I didn’t think it was going to go this far. I am so proud and want to see her get the acknowledgement she deserves.”
To earn the Guinness World Records’ title of The World’s Youngest Published Author, Female, the book has to be published by a commercial publishing house and have at least 1,000 copies printed and sold. Bella’s book met the criteria(标准).
Besides being an accomplished author, Bella is just a regular kid who enjoys reading swimming and playing on her tablet. In her free time, she is currently working on a sequel(续集) to Snowy’s story.
24. What does Bella want to tell children in her book
A. It is not easy to be a story writer.
B. It is dangerous for cats to live alone.
C. They should take good care of their cats.
D. They shouldn’t go outside at night alone.
25. Where did Bella find inspiration for her book
A. From a cat’s daily life. B. From a picture she drew.
C. From her father’s advice. D. From her life experiences.
26. What does the underlined word “astounding” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Surprising. B. Embarrassing. C. Moving. D. Inspiring.
27. What do we know about Bella
A. She has no sisters. B. She was born in 2016.
C. She will continue to write. D. She doesn’t like swimming.

The answer to traffic jams on the highways around airports could be electric air taxis. But this is not a futuristic dream. United Airlines is helping to make it a reality.
The carrier is ordering 200 electric air taxis, also called eVOTL planes, from Eve Air Mobility which designed vehicles for short distance-like going from city centers to airports-that can seat four passengers. The eVOTL planes take off and land like helicopters.
These vehicles that are due to be delivered in 2026 can fly from rooftop to rooftop. These types of vehicles are more environmental than using ground transportation. That’s because the air taxis use electric engines that have no carbon emissions(碳排放). This will reduce pollution and noise levels by 90 percent, according to United Airlines and Eve Air Mobility.
“Our agreement with Eve shows our confidence in the urban air mobility market and serves as another important step toward our goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050,” said Michael Leskinen, president of United Airlines Ventures. “We’ll get there not with empty gestures, but by taking the harder path of actually reducing the emissions from flying.” If the company meets its goal of reducing its carbon footprint to net zero, it will be the first US airline to do so.
This isn’t United’s first try for environmental protection. The company started using bio-fuel(生物燃料) in flights from Los Angeles in 2016. It was the first airline in the US to promise to significantly use bio-fuel and this could cut emissions by 60 percent. From baby steps to flying ones, this airline is working on its commitment to the environment. Hopefully this is just one part of a global commitment to green the airline industry.
28. How does the author introduce the takeoff and landing of eVOTL planes
A. By providing a long list. B. By using experts’ words.
C. By making a comparison. D. By referring to a news report.
29. What can we learn about the eVOTL planes
A. They make no noise when flying. B. They each can hold eight passengers.
C. They are designed for long distances. D. They are friendly to the environment.
30. What can be inferred about United Airlines
A. It promises to use bio-fuel in 2050. B. It has a pioneering spirit.
C. It stopped carbon emissions in 2016. D. It shows no interest in electric air taxis.
31. What might be the best title for the text
A. The Promising Future of Air Travel Is Seen Now
B. More Companies Are Developing Green Technologies
C. Electric Air Taxis Will Make Getting to the Airport Easy
D, Electric Air Taxis Will Be Put Into Wide Use in the Future
D
Edible(可食用的) cities are becoming increasingly popular around the world. In the city of Andernach, Germany, anyone who lives or happens to be in the town of 30,000 people is encouraged to pick and take whatever they want from the fruiting trees and bushes in the town center. The town, which sits in the Rhine River Valley, is among the growing number of edible cities across the globe. Since the start of the program in 2010, there is more than enough produce to go around every year regardless of whether someone grabs a single pear or a bag full of potatoes.
“People here are very proud when talking to others about our edible city,” shared Bettina Schneider, city team coordinator(协调员) for the Edible Cities Network in Andernach. “The land that was changed into fruiting gardens and orchards(果园) in Andernach was previously overgrown. But today the town is covered with peach, almond and pear trees.”
Andernach’s public gardens and orchards have also inspired other cities in Germany and throughout the European Union to follow suit. Today, the Edible Cities Network—a group of about 150 cities worldwide with fruit trees and vegetable gardens in public places for anyone to access free of charge—is funded by the European Commission.
“Public green natural spaces in cities are incredibly valuable, and even more so as temperatures rise and cities become more crowded,” said Ina sāumel, a principal investigator for the Edible Cities Network. She explained that Edible Cities Network’s goal is to encourage people to get involved in their urban parks instead of only thinking of them as passive places.
Many cities in the United States have also started similar projects. There are public lands from Seattle to North Carolina where people are welcome to pick and take from fruiting trees and bushes.
32. What can people do in an edible city
A. Grow fruit trees and potatoes anywhere. B. Pick agricultural products on public land.
C. Go to any restaurant to enjoy food for free. D. Make a fortune by selling apples and peaches.
33. What is Andernach residents’ attitude toward their edible city
A. Favorable. B. Intolerant. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
34. What is the goal of the Edible Cities Network
A. To enable people to access fresh food. B. To make the cities cleaner and nicer.
C. To stop people from living a busy life. D. To involve people in their urban parks.
35. What is most likely to be discussed following the last paragraph
A. Some edible cities in America. B. Predictions about edible cities.
C. Evaluations about edible cities. D. People’s dependence on edible cities.

Have you ever watched a silent television show and tried to predict how the characters were feeling according to their body language The ability to understand people’s body language is a skill that’s almost born inside of us. 36 . This skill develops as we grow older, which is called non-verbal communication.
Body language helps us communicate what we’re feeling without saying much at all. Think about a time when you were very angry. Did you clench(咬紧) your teeth Did your palms get sweaty when you were anxious In most cultures, these cues(线索) that reveal emotional states are quite common. But gestures have specific meanings across different cultures. Take touch for example. 37 . In India, however, the ideal way to greet someone is by touching their feet, not by shaking their hand.
In some places, gestures meaning hellos and goodbyes and touches indicating friendship and love are all the same. But the problem arises because some gestures have vastly different meanings in different cultures. For example, the “OK” symbol is used as a superb symbol in India, but in Turkey, this symbol is considered offensive(冒犯性的). 38 .
So, what should we do Should we not use gestures at all Of course not. 39 . No matter how much we try to stop ourselves, we will end up communicating non-verbally in some way or another.
40 , you’d better make a quick Google search or turn to a comprehensive book to better interact with the locals, and avoid offending them during your stay!
A. It was a very kind and thoughtful gesture
B. So, the next time you decide to travel to another country
C. When you flash the “OK” sign there, you’re asking for a fight
D. They also use a system of sounds and body language to communicate

If you are able to step outside and hear many types of birds, you might have a feeling of well-being, A study shows that 56 (hear) diverse(各种各样的) birdsong may help increase our happiness.
The study 57 (do) by researchers at California Polytechnic State University and the research team studied 58 effects of birdsong on people walking through a park in the US state of Colorado.
A biology graduate student, Danielle Ferraro, led the study. Ferraro says, “There could be, sort of, an evolutionary(进化的) reason 59 we have a special 60 (prefer) for birdsong. And the idea is that when we hear birdsong it could signal safety to us.”
There could be some other reasons too. Ferraro states that in many 61 (area) around the world birdsong can also signal the arrival of spring and nice weather. Bird diversity, she adds, can also mean a healthy environment.
Ferraro and her team played 62 (record) songs from a diverse group of birds at certain times of the day on hiking trails in a park. Then they talked with hikers after they passed 63 . Hikers who heard diverse birdsong reported a 64 (great) sense of well-being than those who heard simply the 65 (nature) birds. The researchers suggest that both the bird sounds and biodiversity can increase feelings of well-being.

Spenser’s First Web
Spenser was a small black spider(蜘蛛). Like all of his brothers and sisters, he had eight legs to help him walk and run. He was now big enough to know how to move all his legs together and not trip over them. Spenser was getting bigger every day.
Today Spenser felt nervous. It was time for him to learn to spin(织) a web on his own. He had watched his mother build beautiful, soft webs from the silk she made herself. His mother’s webs were lovely. They took a long time to make, and in the morning, they were covered with drops of dew that made them look like castles.
“OK, Spenser,” said Ms. Spinney. “It’s time to spin your first web. Let’s begin by making a big plus sign.” Ms. Spinney was Spenser’s teacher. She was old and small but very strong. She quickly used her silk to make a plus sign between two nearby leaves.
Spenser was able to make silk, but he had trouble attaching it to anything. No matter how hard he tried, the threads(丝) slipped away and fell to the ground. Spenser tried hard, but he was getting tired.
“Take a break, Spenser,” said Ms. Spinney. “You’re trying very hard, but I can see that you’re getting frustrated(沮丧的).”
“I’m not frustrated!” said Spenser. “I’m mad that I’m not good at it, and I’m sad that I can’t do it.” Spenser felt like he was going to cry.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

M: Marie Curie loved to study and hoped to become a scientist from her early childhood. Her interest in science was encouraged by her father, who was a teacher of physics.
In 1891, she left Poland and entered the University of Paris. Four years later, she graduated with the highest grade in her class, Then, she remained in the same university doing scientific research work. In order to discover something that gave off a kind of radiation, she did some experiments carefully again and again. Finally in 1902 she and her husband succeeded in finding the radioactive element—radium. Their achievement won them the Nobel Prize for physics in 1903.
In 1911, she won another Nobel Prize, all by herself in chemistry. Thus she became the first female scientist to win two Nobel Prizes.

My Favorite Song
Good morning, everyone! I'm very glad to deliver a short speech about my favorite song, Heal the World, which is a charity song written, composed and sung by Michael Jackson. I like this song because of its melody and content. For example, there are “heal the world, make it a better place, for you and for me and the entire human race” in its lyrics. It is an excellent song calling for peace around the world and advocating protecting our environment.
So, I strongly recommend you listen to this song. I'm sure you will like it, too. Thank you!

Ms. Spinney smiled kindly. “That's what being frustrated feels like, Spenser,” she explained. “It's OK to feel that way, as long as you don't quit trying. Rest a bit and try again after lunch.” Spenser sat down in a shady spot to eat lunch. As he chewed his food, he began to feel calmer. He took a deep breath and spun just a little thread to attach to a nearby leaf. It stuck!
Spenser went back to his web-making spot to see if he could do it again. He closed his eyes and spun. This time the thread stayed where he put it on the leaves, and he was able to make his first plus sign. “Very good, Spenser!” said Ms. Spinney. “We're out of time for today, but you can learn the next step tomorrow.” Spenser looked back at his plus sign. It wasn't a whole web, but he didn't care. He felt very proud.
