Upcycling is the process of changing old materials into something useful and often beautiful. It is different from recycling. When you recycle something, old materials need to be broken down so that their base materials can be remade into a new product, often of inferior(次等的)quality. When you upcycle an object, you aren’t breaking down the material. You’re simply making it into something else. Also, the upcycled object is typically of the same, or even better quality.
The idea of upcycling isn’t new. Some of the best examples of modern-day upcycling come from the 1930s to 1940s when people didn’t have many material resources(资源). In those days, people found new purposes for old things over and over until they were no longer useful. For example, old coats would be turned into shoes and an old door would be made into a new table.
Nowadays, saving is still a big reason why some people upcycle. An even bigger reason for the rebirth of upcycling is that it’s environmentally-friendly. Things shouldn’t just be thrown away when they can be turned into something useful. Upcycling is also more environmentally-friendly than recycling which requires energy or water to break down materials. Upcycling just requires your own creativity and effort.
Upcycling can provide you with something that’s both creative and practical. Why don’t you support the idea by checking your house or recycling bin and creating objects yourself Take action right now!
根据短文内容,判断句子正(T)、误(F)。
29.Recycling doesn’t need old materials to be broken down.
30.The upcycled objects must have better quality than the recycled ones.
31.People upcycled in the old days in order to save materials.
32.Upcycling is much less environmentally-friendly than recycling.
33.The writer wants to encourage people to upcycle in the passage.
五、阅读回答问题
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,完成下列各题。
If you are in Shanghai and want to throw away a cup of milk tea, be careful! You need to follow these steps: first, pour out any leftover into a wet waste bin; second, put the paper cover into a recyclable waste bin; third, throw the single-use cup into a dry waste bin.
Sound difficult and annoying You’ll have to get used to it. From July 1st, 2019 on, people in Shanghai are required to separate their rubbish according to strict rules.
Why should we separate our rubbish The answer lies in the increasing amount of waste we are producing. Chinese cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year, according to China Economic Net. Most of this waste is buried (掩埋) in landfills, which may pollute the water and soil.
Moreover, we are running out of space for new landfills. In fact, more than half of our waste can be recycled. Recyclable rubbish can be made into new materials. For example, wet rubbish can be used to make gas, heat and many other kinds of useful things. But in order to recycle rubbish efficiently (高效地), we need to separate our rubbish.
Can’t garbage-processing companies (垃圾处理公司) do the separating job They can. But that requires a lot of work and costs lots of money. Things will become much easier if each of us can separate our own rubbish. Besides, separating rubbish can encourage people to produce less waste because separating rubbish is annoying. Do you still want to buy that milk tea
34.When did separating rubbish start in Shanghai
It started from ________________________________.
35.How much waste do people produce in Chinese cities each year
People produce ________________________________ of waste in Chinese cities each year.
36.What waste can be used to make gas and heat
________________________________ can be used to make gas and heat.
37.What does the underlined word “They” refer to in the last paragraph
It refers to ________________________________.
38.Why can separating rubbish encourage people to produce less waste
Because ________________________________.

What Is Coral
The corals that form reefs aren’t rocks or plants. Corals are made up of groups of tiny animals called polyps (PAH-lips). Most polyps are smaller than a pea. Thousands of polyps can live on a piece of coral.
Where Do Corals Live
Coral reefs need certain living conditions to stay healthy. ____39____ They need healthy algae(藻类)for food. Both coral and algae need water that is the right temperature.
Coral reefs can be damaged easily.
Fresh water that comes from rivers can kill coral. Dirt and debris can clog them. Heavy waves from large storms can break reefs apart.
____40____
Coral reefs are very fragile. Both disease and human activities damage reefs. Other harmful bacteria(细菌)attack the algae. If the coral can’t eat the algae, the coral starts to starve. If the bacteria are stopped, the coral can recover(复原). Without enough algae to eat the coral will die. If the coral dies, the reef will die.
Humans cause most coral reef damage. Some people fish with poisons(毒药)and explosives(炸药). Boats and ships break off large parts of reefs. Boats can leak(渗漏)gas and oil. Gas and oil leaks harm coral, plants, and fish.
Protect the coral reefs.
Coral reefs are beautiful. Reefs are also valuable. Reefs help protect coasts from storms and floods. Much of the world’s supply of fish lives around reefs. The fish depend on the reefs for their food. Many reef plants and animals also have other uses. Some are used for medicines.
Many countries try to protect their reefs. They have written laws and rules. ____41____
Almost 25 percent of the world’s reefs have been destroyed. More than half of the rest are damaged. We can all do things to help protect the reefs. We can help even if we don’t live near an ocean.
____42____ Learn about what people do that makes ocean temperatures rise. Learn what we do that makes bacteria grow. We can all help protect coral reefs. Then all the living things on coral reefs will continue to have homes and food.

Deciding ____54____ a product is green, however, isn’t always easy. We need to consider the whole life cycle of the product even after it’s of no use. Here is what we may keep in mind.

Look into what companies(公司) tell us about their product. It’s easy to say that a product is “green” or “all natural” but the words may be too good to be true. So, much of the information about a product can’t be completely believed. After all, companies try to make us believe that their products are environmentally responsible(负有责任的).
We should develop a habit of buying what we really need. Things like food and clothing are necessary for life, but many others ____60____. Love the earth
The earth is the only place to call home. It provides us with air, water and other things we need for living. That’s why we should try our best to protect it.
With rapid development, the air we breathe is becoming dirtier and dirtier. And the air caused more and more illnesses. Besides, there are fewer and fewer fish in the river. We must take action to protect our home—the earth.
As students, we can take our own cloth bags to shop so that we can reduce the pollution. What’s more, we should take our own chopsticks to the restaurant when we eat out in order to protect the trees.
We can do many things to protect our earth every day. Why not do it right now Love the earth as it is our only home.
