According to a new study, high school students who take music classes get better grades on Maths, Science and English exams than their non-musical classmates. If students learnt to play a musical instrument (乐器) in primary school and continued playing in high school, they not only got better grades, but were about one school year ahead of their non-musical classmates.
Experts studied over 112,000 students. These students finished all the 12-grade schoolwork from 2012 to 2015. If one of the students had at least one instrumental music class, he or she was seen as taking music classes. And the music classes need instrumental music experience and include concert bands, jazz bands and so on.
The experts found the relationships between music education and grades were clearer for those who learnt musical instruments. The study shows that the skills learnt in instrumental music class can turn into the students’ learning ability at school.
According to the study, a music student has to learn to read music notation (乐谱), and develop eye-hand-mind coordination (协调) skills, quick listening skills and team skills. All those skills play an important role in developing the learner’s different abilities.
Lots of people shared their opinions on the Internet. Some said they agreed with the result. They thought it was interesting. However, others didn’t think so. They thought music education had nothing to do with grades.

B.There were both primary school students and middle school students in this study.
C.The study shows that non-musical students aren’t so clever as music students.
D.The study shows that grades have something to do with music education.
27.Which two groups of students did the experts compare in the study
A.Students who finished all the 12-grade schoolwork and students who did not.
B.Primary school students and high school students.
C.Students who took instrumental music lessons and students who did not.
D.Students who got good grades and students who got bad grades.
28.According to the study, how many skills can a student learn when taking music lessons which are helpful for developing learner’s abilities
A.One. B.Two. C.Four. D.Six.

Julia Hill, an American woman, was born in 1974. She was 23 years old when she discovered that a company wanted to cut down part of a forest in California. In the forest there were lots of redwood trees. One of the trees was 70 metres tall and 1,000 years old.
Julia wasn’t happy about this. She traveled to California and climbed up the tree. “If I sit in the tree,” she said, “the company can’t cut it down.” At the beginning, Julia planned to stay in the tree for two weeks. She stayed in the tree day and night.
Environmental organizations supported her, but other people weren’t on her side and they tried to stop her. The company used a helicopter that stayed near her tree-house for a long time. The helicopter was very noisy and there was a lot of wind. Julia didn’t like it, but she stayed in the tree.

Drawing might help you think
When you’re sitting in class, have you ever drawn pictures in the margins of your notebooks
If so, your teacher might have told you ____47____ (stop). Many people think of doodling (涂鸦) as a distraction (精神涣散) from more important things. But it might be just the opposite.
One study shows that doodling may help you ____48____ (remember) things you hear. In 2009, researchers asked two groups of people to listen to a phone message. One group was encouraged to doodle, but the other was not. Neither group ____49____ (know) that it would be asked to remember information from the message. But the group that doodled remembered 29 percent more.
Other people have suggested other uses for drawing. Jesse Prinz is a professor who studies doodling. He ____50____ (say) it can help you think creatively. Walking away from a problem to draw might actually help you solve it. When you come back, you ____51____ (have) a fresh perspective (思考方法) and figure out an answer more quickly.
Two years ago, Sunni Brown wrote a book on doodling. She argues that doodling is a tool that can help people think. She admits that people see doodling as ____52____ (do) nothing, but she wants to change that. In fact, she runs a business that helps companies improve organization and planning through doodling. Brown believes doodling is helpful because it incorporates (整合) many ways of learning. You learn in four ways: seeing, hearing, reading or writing, and through movement. The more ways you use, the better you learn.
And when you doodle while you ____53____ (listen) to a lecture, you use all four.
You might think that being good at drawing is important for doodling. But if the point of doodling is to help you think, then it doesn’t matter what the picture looks like. Dear Sir/ Madam,
I’ve learned that volunteers are needed this summer vacation. In my opinion, being volunteers is really meaningful for it can not only help others but also bring us happiness.
As a 15-year-old nine-grader from Hongxing Junior High School, I'm kind, helpful and outgoing and always ready to help others. With a dream of becoming an English teacher in the future, I'd like very much to volunteer to teach English in the village school. To make my dream come true, I have been working hard on my study, especially English. In all courses, I always keep the highest exam scores in my class and have won several prizes in English speech competitions. Besides, I am good with kids. Last summer vacation,I volunteered to work in the community kindergarten, where I learned how to take care of kids and gained valuable work experience. So I am the right person you need.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
