一、完形填空 (15分)
“Mommy, I got something for you!” Cody ran through the door after school. His face wore the biggest smile ever. He waved something above his head. “It’s a pen. But not just any pen. It’s a lucky pen!” He handed me the pen 1 , waiting for my reaction(反应).
I looked at the pen in my hand. There was nothing 2 about it. It looked just like any other ballpoint pen. I had a drawer full of them. At that moment, I didn’t realize how special it was or how much I would come to treasure(珍爱) it.
I had made the decision to be a(n) 3 . I had dreamed about it for a long time but I was afraid of being refused by the publishing houses. The night before, I told my husband my 4 when I thought Cody wasn’t listening. “What if 5 likes my writing and I fail ” But Cody did 6 what I said. Now he stood in front of me, watching me examine the pen. “You don’t have to be afraid now,” he said. “This pen will make your 7 great and everyone will love you.”
Tears filled my eyes. Refusal(拒绝) and failure didn’t seem like such a big problem any more. Even if I 8 sold the first book, I had everything I could ever need. I knew that pen would bring me luck, though. And I felt 9 already, just by having Cody in my life, especially when I heard what he did to get it.
In the lunchroom, Cody heard an older boy talking about having a lucky 10 . He decided to get it for me. The boy was a tough negotiator(强硬的谈判者) but Cody didn’t 11 . In the end, he 12 his favorite Matchbox car, two army men his brother gave him, a crayon, and a piece of candy-his most important things, for that pen. Just to make 13 feel better.
I still have that pen, though it’s long out of ink, in a cup on my desk. When a refusal letter arrives and I start feeling 14 , I look at it and remember just how lucky I am. For while I value that pen, it’s Cody who I really 15 in my life.

I spent a lot of time making a large shelf for my cave. I found a big tree and chopped it down. This took three days. Then, I chopped off the branches. This took another two days. After that, I chopped the wood away from one side, and then from the other side. This took more than one month. Altogether, it took forty -two days. In England, two men with a good saw could make six of these shelves from that tree in half a day.
I also spent a lot of time looking after my corn and rice crops. I had to protect them from wild animals and birds, so I made a fence around them. I shot some of the birds and hung them up near the corn. After that, all the other birds stayed away. I used one of the old swords I had taken from the ship to cut down the corn when it was ready. I was very proud of my corn and rice and worked hard to increase my crops. A few years later, I would have enough corn to make bread. I had to find a way to grind the corn into flour, but the rocks on the island were not hard enough. I finally discovered that a very hard piece of wood would do. I used some cloth to separate the meal from the husks. Not having an oven, I made some square pots with lids and covered them with hot ashes. They baked the dough, and I had bread! I made my cave bigger again to hold the corn and flour so that I could make bread whenever I needed to.
I sometimes wondered how I could get to the land which was visible from the other side of the island. I went to the ship's boat that was blown onto the beach in the shipwreck. However, I could not get it to the water. It was too heavy. I tried many different ways, but none of them were successful.

Facial-recognition (人脸识别) cameras are everywhere – even in your smartphone. Many people use this technology to unlock (解锁) their phones, open doors, or make quick payments. But during the pandemic (大流行), there is a problem: everyone wears masks. What a hassle (麻烦)!
Scientists are trying to solve this problem. For example, Engineering & Technology (E&T) magazine reports that Hanwang, a tech company in Beijing, has made a new system (系统). It can recognize 95 percent of people when they wear masks.
What’s the secret It’s all about your eyes.
Marios Savvides from Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition. As we get older, he says, our faces change shape. But the area around our eyes doesn’t. It stays the same – even if we put on weight. As long as there are enough data from the area of our eyes, the cameras can recognize us.v
Tech5 is another facial-recognition company. The Swiss company’s product scans (扫描) the shape of your face. It also scans your iris (虹膜), which is the colored part of your eyes. Tech5 hopes to ignore (忽略) all of the face below the nose.
This kind of software is more important than just unlocking your phone. “It can detect crime suspects (寻找犯罪嫌疑人) and terrorists [even when they wear masks],” said Huang Lei from Hanwang. Hanwang’s technology is used by Chinese police in places like subway stations and airports. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force.
Huang pointed out one big weakness : it fails when people wear both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial (面部的) information is lost,” Lei said to E&T.
7. What problem does Hanwang’s new system try to solve
A. How to unlock phones with facial-recognition technology.
B. How to protect people during the pandemic.
C. How to find crime suspects at subway stations and airports.
D. How to realize facial-recognition when people wear masks.
8. What can we learn according to Marios Savvides
A. Cameras can always recognize people by their shape of face.
B. The area around our eyes stays the same shape as we get older.
C. Putting on weight may change the shape of our eyes.
D. Facial recognition technology works better on young people.
9. Which part of the face does Tech5 use to develop their technology
A. Mouth. B. Face color. C. Iris. D. Nose.
10. What is Paragraph 6 mainly about
A. Ways of finding terrorists. B. The weakness of the new technology.
C. Similar technologies to facial recognition.
D. Why the new facial recognition software is important.

And now you want to borrow money from me, a dog!”“Look! I'm not asking you a favor. You can charge me any interest(利息) you want. I don't mind. My ships will arrive any day now.”
“All right, Antonio. I'm willing to lend you the money. I won't even charge you any interest. Just pay me back on time.”
Antonio couldn’t believe his ears, “What did you say?”
“I said you didn't know me. You always call me a cheapskate(守财奴), but I am not. I will help you. I won’t even charge you a single ducat. However, there's something I'm worried about. What if you don’t pay me back?”
“Don’t worry, Shylock. I’ll pay you back.”
“Well, I need some kind of a promise. Three thousand ducats is a lot of money. If you don’t pay me back on time, I want a pound of flesh. I’ll take a pound of flesh from any part of your body.”
Antonio didn’t like what Shylock said. “No. I’d rather pay some interest if I’m late on the payment.”
“I’m afraid that’s no good,” said Shylock as he laughed. “Do you think I’d take money from another moneylender Besides, this agreement is only a joke!
