As we age, it often takes us a longer time to recover from injuries (受伤). That is, for some people. After a woman suffered a knee injury, she became a great swimmer — at age 88.
Nearing the age of 101 has not slowed down this woman. In fact, in the swimming pool she is only getting faster. Recently, the 100 year old woman became the world's first 100 year old person to complete a 1,500 meter freestyle swimming race in a 25 meter pool. Her name is Mieko Nagaoka. Ms. Nagaoka set a world record for her age group at that swimming event. She swam the race in one hour, 15 minutes and 54 seconds.
The female world record holder completed the same distance in just under 15 and a half minutes. But that swimmer, Katie Ledecky, is only 17 years old. And Ms. Nagaoka was not competing against her. Her race was not a race of speed but of endurance (耐力).
Breaking swimming records is nothing new to Ms. Nagaoka. So far she has broken 25 records. But she began competing when she was much younger — at the age of 88. Ms. Nagaoka suffered a knee injury in her 80s, so she began swimming to help her body recover. Since her first international swimming competition, she hasn't looked back. At a swim meet in New Zealand, Ms. Nagaoka took the bronze medal (铜牌) in the 50 meter backstroke and she won three silver medals at an Italian swim meet.
Her story tells us that age is never a problem for those who really want to try.

A 7 year old boy in Ohio tried to sell his toy dog, police in Franklin said. “We heard about the boy from a man who came into the police station and said there was a small child carrying a stuffed animal in a busy street of Franklin,” Franklin Police Officer Steve Dunham said.
When officers went to the area, Dunham spotted the boy in front of a shop and got out of his car to speak with him. “The boy was really nervous at first,” Dunham said. “He told me he was hungry and needed food.”
Chief Russ Whitman added the boy said he had not eaten for several days. While other officers went to the child's home, Dunham took the boy to a fast food restaurant and the two had dinner together.
The officers who went to investigate the boy's home reported that it was in terrible condition and there were other children there, adding that they found garbage and liquor bottles everywhere. Four other children — 11, 12, 15 and 17 — also lived in the house. The parents, who were home at the time, were each charged with child neglect.
Child Protective Services contacted other family members to pick up the children. The 7 year old watched cartoons at the police station with a policeman for a few hours until a family member picked him up. The boy's parents were not jailed, but the children remained in the care of relatives, according to Franklin Police. St. Vincent De Paul at St. Mary's Church in Franklin is organizing a donation drive to raise money for the family, according to Whitman.
“I'm very proud of my officers for what they did, but officers across the nation go above and beyond every single day,” Whitman said. “You can find stories like this everywhere with police officers every day. That's why we get into the business — to help people.”
