Here are some summer camps for your gifted (有天赋的) children.
The Center for the Talented Youth
The Center for the Talented Youth offers summer programs for gifted children in grades two through twelve. The camps for children in grades two through four are day programs only. Those for kids in grades five through twelve are both day and residential (住宿的) programs. This three week program offers courses in science, math and writing.
Two other programs offer international studies and take place in China and Mexico.
Summer Institute for the Gifted
It provides both day and residential programs in seven different states for gifted children in grades kindergarten through twelve. They take place in many schools, eleven of which are colleges.
The day programs are for children in kindergarten through sixth grade, while the residential programs are for the older children. A group of scientists in the Netherlands recently used high tech methods to examine a secret hidden inside an ancient Chinese statue (雕像). It was sent to the Drents Museum in the northeastern Netherlands as part of an exhibit. But while working on the statue, researchers took the chance to study the body of a Buddhist monk (佛僧) inside it.
The statue was shipped to a medical center for CT scans, which are tests that produce X ray pictures. Scientists used the technology to find out the statue's hidden secrets. The body of the monk was sitting on top of a roll of cloth marked with Chinese characters (字). The cloth shows that the monk was named Liuquan and lived around the year 1100.
“On the outside, it looked like a large statue of Buddha,” said Vincent van Vilsteren from the Drents Museum. “What flabbergasted me was that, on the inside, it was the mummy (干尸) of a Buddhist monk. Later we learned that for the first 200 years, the mummy was probably placed in a Buddhist temple. Only in the 14th century did they do all the work to move it into a nice statue.”
Researchers at the Drents Museum still have a lot of questions about the mummy. It is believed to be the only Chinese Buddhist mummy that has been studied outside Asia. Scientists hope that DNA testing on the mummy will help them learn more about it. Further research may dig up more information about the monk in the months to come.
4.What is special about the statue
A.Something unusual is in it.
B.It is a modern Chinese statue.
C.It is made of different kinds of material.
D.Strange characters can be seen on its surface.

The Polish take great pride in their culture. Our culture has many different customs and traditions. I will discuss three of these traditions and customs.
The Polish will say “Dziekuje” (“thank you”) only after receiving their change. What I mean by this is that when you are in Poland, you should wait to say “thank you” until after you have been given your change back. If you do not, you are telling cashiers (收银员) that they can “keep the change”. Often, people visiting Poland will feel that things are very expensive, until they learn that they are giving the store clerk permission to keep the money that would have been given back.
Polish people break “bread” with their families during their Christmas Eve meal. The Christmas Eve celebration starts with the breaking of the Oplatek, which is a thin piece of “bread”. In my family, the eldest in the family (my grandfather) takes the big Oplatek and breaks it into large pieces that he then hands down to each of his four children (my aunt, uncles, and father). Then, these family members break their pieces into smaller sizes and pass them out to their own children. Once the last piece is passed down to the youngest, we say a prayer (做祷告) and eat the piece of thin bread.
Polish people celebrate “Imieniny”, or Name's Day. This day is more important than one's birthday. They often name their children after a saint (圣徒) whose day is closest to the date that they were born on. Then their saint's day that they were named after becomes their “new” birthday. On Name's Day, families and friends gather together and enjoy a variety of food, drinking, and dancing.
As you can see, Poland has a few very unique (独特的) traditions and customs. I honor my Polish culture and will pass it on to my own children because it is important to know one's own culture.
8.In Poland, if you say “Dziekuje” before getting your change,________.
A.the store clerk will keep it
B.the product will be changed
C.the store clerk will check the money
D.the product will be returned to the store
9.On Christmas Eve, the author will receive “bread” from ________.
A.his grandfather B.his uncle
C.his aunt D.his father
10.A Polish person's Imieniny is ________.
A.a day to visit families and friends
B.more important than Name's Day
C.near to his or her birthday
D.a day to honor a saint
11.What does the author think of Polish traditions and customs
A.He feels proud of them.
B.He shows no interest in them.
C.He is worried about them.
D.He considers them very funny.

We live in a world where it's often not easy to find someone to trust.A smiling person always inspires trust.Even economists consider that smiles are valuable.A smile may increase other people's trust by about 10%.
People may also smile when they are caught doing bad things.According to a study made by LaFrance and Hecht, this can in fact be to their own advantage. We have a tendency (倾向) to be kinder towards those who make mistakes if they wear a smile while being caught.Even a guilty smile may help you get away pretty easily when you make mistakes.
We may also smile when we hear a piece of good news.In this case, women tend to smile more often than men.Smiling can also be a means of reducing the pain caused by a troubling situation.Even if we force ourselves to smile when we don't want to, this may be enough to lift our spirits just a little bit.
When we feel angry or anxious, our attention tends to narrow down.We can no longer see what's going on around us and we can only notice what is in front of us.But if we smile, we feel better and increase flexibility (灵活性) of our attention and the ability to think.Smiling can help us focus and understand better.
“Keep_on_smiling,_and_the_world_will_smile_with_you.” One of the greatest social pleasure is to smile and be smiled to in return, especially because this comes like a natural thing.
People who smile often live longer.A study based on some pictures taken of some baseball players suggested that those who used to smile a lot survived about 7 years longer than those who did not smile very often.

解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第二段中的第一句和“If you do not, you are telling cashiers (收银员) that they can ‘keep the change’.”可知,在波兰,如果你在收银员给你找钱之前说“Dziekuje”,就等于让收银员留下零钱。
9.On Christmas Eve, the author will receive “bread” from ________.
A.his grandfather B.his uncle
C.his aunt D.his father
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Then, these family members break their pieces into smaller sizes and pass them out to their own children.”可知,在圣诞节前夜作者会得到他父亲切的面包。
10.A Polish person's Imieniny is ________.
A.a day to visit families and friends
B.more important than Name's Day
C.near to his or her birthday
D.a day to honor a saint
解析:选C 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“They often name ... birthday.”可知,在波兰,孩子经常以某位圣徒名字命名,哪位圣徒的纪念日与孩子的生日最接近,人们就选哪位圣徒命名。故选C项。
11.What does the author think of Polish traditions and customs
A.He feels proud of them.
B.He shows no interest in them.
C.He is worried about them.
D.He considers them very funny.
解析:选A 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“I honor my Polish culture ... own culture.”可知,作者以自己国家的传统习俗为豪。
D
We live in a world where it's often not easy to find someone to trust.A smiling person always inspires trust.Even economists consider that smiles are valuable.A smile may increase other people's trust by about 10%.
