It was the end of the school term and my son Tom had less than three months left before he would finish his six years at high school.During that time he developed a love for basketball. Sadly, because of my work over the last twelve months, I had only been able to attend a few of his games; however, I was determined to get to his last game for the school term.
Tom's team led by just over 20 points at the end of the first half. The second half changed as the other team quickly came back. Tom's team started to miss an increasing number of shots. It was at that point that the coach called his first timeout.
The spectators (观众) became quiet as the coach spoke to them. He had the team standing in a half circle, but he squatted (蹲) down, looking up at them and giving some very clear instructions on what they needed to do in the last couple of minutes. As he stood up to allow the team to return to the court, I saw he gave some further words of encouragement to all of them.
You could see that he knew that the team was fighting to save the game and that he needed to lift their spirits. By squatting down he placed himself in a position where he was talking up to them, rather than down or at them, and as the players went back onto the court his words of encouragement served to lift their energy and spirits.
Well, Tom's team went on to win the final by 5 points. As I drove away I thought about what can happen to us all in our everyday life. One of my favourite quotes is about the half filled glass of water — “Is the glass half empty or half full?” Like the coach, the answer to this quote all depends on how you look at things.

D.show his anger at the bad performance of the players
6.What is the writer's attitude towards the coach
A.Negative. B.Supportive.
C.Interested. D.Unconcerned.
7.What can we infer from the passage
A.A father should care about his son at school.
B.Playing hard is rewarded with a close match.
C.What a coach says has the most influence on players.
D.Looking at things positively is important in hard times.

Playing sports can help children in many ways. But many children cannot play sports. Their families do not have enough money to buy the equipment (器材) they need. Max Levitt wanted to change that. He had worked in College Youth Sports. And that experience helped him find a solution to the problem.
Levitt created a group called Leveling the Playing Field (LPF) four years ago. The organization collects used sports equipment and gives it to children who need it. Levitt said no child should be unable to play sports because of the cost.
Levitt noticed in America, much of the sports equipment that teams used in the previous (以前的) season was thrown away every year. So Levitt started collecting used equipment and storing it in his parents' home. Now, he keeps it in a storage building. The boxes and shelves are filled with about $1.5 million worth of sports equipment.
Jerome Clemons is a soccer coach at a program called DC SCORES, a group that gives free classes after school. Clemons said playing sports was important to children. “It helps them build character. It teaches them about teamwork. It gives them the opportunity to do activities after school.”
LPF has given more than $1.4 million worth of sports equipment to 300 programs in Washington, DC. It has helped more than 100,000 children. Levitt said he planned to bring the LPF to other cities to give every child a chance to play sports.
Levitt said his organization could not succeed without the help of volunteers. He and another person are the group's only paid workers. He said more than 500 people had volunteered to work for the group.
8.Why can't many children play sports
A.They have no time to play sports.
B.They can't pay for the equipment.
C.They don't want to buy equipment.
D.They can't get support from their families.
9.What made Levitt think of the idea of creating the LPF
A.He liked collecting used things.
B.His parents gave him much money.
C.There was a waste of sports equipment.
D.College Youth Sports was popular in America.
10.What does Jerome Clemons tell us
A.DC SCORES is important to children.
B.Playing sports is very helpful for students.

A.Volunteers offer much help to it.
B.It has raised a total of $1.4 million.

Many people in the UK have poor mathematical skills. Dr.Richard Pike, a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, said that mathematics questions in entrance tests to British universities were much too simple.
About two thirds of British universities now offer special courses in mathematics to new students. The courses are necessary because new students do not know enough mathematics when they leave high school. A university teacher said that there was a serious risk that there would not be enough scientists and engineers coming out of British universities in the future.
New university students are bad at mathematics. So are a lot of other people in Britain. A survey found that 7 million people in England were bad at mathematics. It is necessary to help people improve their math skills, which are important in lots of ways.
One problem is that many students do not want to study math because they think it is a difficult subject. They want to have high grades in their A levels. High A level grades are necessary in order to go to university. This is one reason why students do not choose to study mathematics at A level. Sometimes schools also prefer students to study easier subjects instead of mathematics. A school will have a better reputation if more students pass A level exams.
Another problem is that some educated people think mathematics is not important. They think it is not a creative subject. This way of thinking is very dangerous. When people do not understand mathematics, they are not able to make proper judgments about important questions. Nowadays, a lot of people use the Internet to find the answers to scientific questions. But they don't understand science, they cannot judge the value of the information which they find. People will become very ignorant if they don't study mathematics and science.
12.What is the text mainly about
A.Mathematics problems in the UK.
B.Simple exams for British students.
C.Unscientific course structure in the UK.
D.Problems for British high school students.
13.Many universities in Britain offer math courses because ________.
A.students hope to learn more about mathematic skills
B.students' parents want them to continue math study
C.students do not learn enough mathematics in high school
D.students are expected to become scientists or engineers
14.We can learn from Paragraph 4 that ________.
A.students think mathematics is not important
B.schools ask all students to pass A level exams
C.schools encourage students to study mathematics
D.students are afraid to study mathematics at A level
15.What can we infer about people who are bad at mathematics
A.They can't make any achievements in some creative work.
B.They can't make correct decisions on some important issues.
C.They can properly use the Internet to look for information.
D.They can gain the respect of students who are bad at math.
