Once upon a time, there was a kingdom where there lived a king who only had one leg and one eye. But his skill, intelligence and generosity made him a competent ruler. As a result, the people in his kingdom lived a joyful and healthy life under his rule. Then, one day while the King was walking in his palace, he noticed the portraits(肖像) of his ancestors along the hallway. The paintings of his ancestors sparked(触发) a thought in the King’s mind. He thought that his children would walk the same hallway one day and remember all the ancestors through these portraits.
So the King sent an invitation to all the painters from across the kingdoms to his court. He announced that he wanted a beautiful portrait made of himself that would be placed in the palace. So any painter who wants to paint his picture should come forward. The painter will be rewarded based on how good the painting will turn out.
The painters started to panic and thought about making the King with only one leg and one eye look beautiful. How can his picture be beautiful It is not possible. They were also scared that the King may get angry and punish them if the portrait did not turn out beautiful. So one by one, all the painters started to make excuses and politely declined to make a painting of the King.
But one young painter raised his hand and said that he would make a beautiful portrait of the King that the King would like. The King was finally happy hearing that at least one of the painters was interested in making his painting. The other painters got curious about how this young painter would make a beautiful painting of the King. The King excitedly permitted him, and the painter started drawing the portrait. He then filled the drawing with paints. Finally, after a long wait, he said that the picture was ready!

I failed again. It was the day of the big marathon. I had decided three years ago to train for the half-marathon event and take home a medal. There I sat, in front of my TV, while I watched others cross the finish line. It was just another in a long string of failures. I had never met a single weight loss or fitness goal and I was majoring in the art of failing.
We are a family with the spirit of exploration. We often plan active vacations. It seemed that on every vacation I was the one who couldn’t go the distance. Each time I urged my family, “Go on without me. Bring me lots of pictures and videos. I’ll be fine just sitting here taking in the view.” I lied. Sick of being left behind, I decided that it would never happen again. As a teenager, surely, there was still hope for me. I always spent weeks walking to prepare for our active vacations. I had lost weight many times. I just always seemed to fail to get where I needed to be.
But this time I would do something different. I was going to walk a half marathon. Surely I would lose weight and get in shape if I could complete over 12 miles in four hours. Be-sides, this would be training. Training sounded cooler than diet and exercise. I was excited and ready to go. I bought the proper equipment and clothing, checked out what type of drinks would be handed out at the marathon and prepared a lot. I had a plan!

Mateo, a seven-year-old boy, was very interested after seeing the wooden box on the sidewalk. The sign on the front said “Little Free Library”. Luisa, Mateo’s older sister, told him that people build boxes and put books inside so other people can take books they want and add ones they’ve already read.
The idea excited Mateo and he decided to make his own so kids could trade books. But Luisa was worried that kids may not notice it. Mateo wanted to have a try anyway, and he asked Luisa to help him. Luisa agreed and went to Papa for tools, while Mateo ran inside to collect books.
With Papa’s help, they built a wooden box. They put a door on it and attached the box to a post. Then they dug a hole in their front yard and stuck the post into the hole. Mateo arranged the books inside the box and closed the door. “Now I just have to wait,” he said.
Mateo ran outside three times that day to check. But each time, his books were the only ones inside. For the next few days, Mateo kept checking the box, but his books were still there.
“No kids noticed it and no one wants to trade books,” Mateo said in low spirits, kicking at the pebbles in the path.
“I know you really wanted your idea to work, Mateo,” Luisa comforted him. “I’m sorry it didn’t.”
The next two days Mateo didn’t check the box. Luisa went to his room to encourage him to take a look in case someone decided to trade, but Mateo refused and buried himself in the sheets. Reading his frustration, Luisa let out a sigh and walked out of the room.

It was Saturday. My daughter and I were chatting in the backyard when I heard someone calling me. I turned around. Standing in the yard was a little boy, strong, brown-haired and dusted with a fine layer of dirt. “William!” I cried in surprise, “What are you doing here ”
“I’m taking care of the lawn,” he answered proudly, sticking his chest out — William’s father owned a lawn sodding company. “I’m sure he appreciates that,” I said to my daughter, “This is William, one of my students. Grade 2. He’s a joy to have in class.”
It was true. Little William was a delight. He loved plants and animals and playing outside during break. And even though he struggled with his study, he never once complained. There was a brightness he brought with him wherever he went.
I’d never forget the day in class when another student was having trouble understanding the lesson. “Don’t worry,” William comforted, eyes wide and sincere. “Sometimes, second grade is really hard.” He was a gentle soul, wise beyond his years.
Still, I couldn’t help but worry. Despite his firm determination, William’s grades were poor. Sometimes, I wondered if he’d be able to pass.
“See you Monday, Ms. Woodall!” he said, running to his father’s side. My daughter and I waved, but William stayed on my mind for the rest of the weekend.
Back at school, William’s grades showed no sign of improvement until the last few weeks of the year. When we studied the life cycle of plants, William stood out. I’d never seen him se invested in the classroom. Though I was happy for him, the worry remained. Would he be able to enter Grade Three
Every year, as a class project, each child planted a sunflower seed in one of those containers. I did this every year but had never seen blossom. This year, I together with William, planted 20 seeds behind the library. Planting the seeds was exciting for many of the students, but not the growing part.

Ben was awakened by a gunshot. He looked out toward the frozen lake. Near the trees he saw a shining piece of metal. When it moved, Ben saw that it was a long gun. A minute later a man wearing hunting clothes came out of the woods.
Suddenly a bird flew upward. The man quickly put the gun to his shoulder and shot. Ben watched the bird, praying it had not been hurt. It flew near the ground and went into some tall bushes. Safe, Ben thought. The hunter didn't move for a moment. Then he began to follow the bird. “No hunting!” Ben shouted, “No hunting on my property!” The man called back, “where can I hunt ”
Ben had just finished putting on his clothes when he heard another gunshot. He walked toward the lake. Fight was the last thing he wanted, but the man must go. Suddenly he heard a bird’s wings beating the dry grass. Ben moved quickly towards the sound. He saw a colored head... the head of a beautiful bird. The bird flapped its wings, one of which was broken completely.
Ben lifted the bird and held it close against his body. It fought to escape, but soon lay quietly in Ben’s arms. Ben decided to take the bird home and fix its broken wing so that it could fly again. He was almost through the woods when he heard the hunter behind him. “You just find that bird the hunter asked, stepping closer and said, “Give me that bird!”
“You get off my hand,” Ben told him. The man’s face got red, “Mister,” he said, “I have been hunting here all my life. I grew up here.” Ben looked into the hunter’s gray eyes, his voice raised, “I do not know who you are and I do not care. I own this place and I am telling you to leave!” “Now look, mister,” the hunter insisted, “be reasonable.” He raised his gun. A cold wind blew across Ben’s face. He felt a chill go down his spine (脊背). He could still give the bird to the hunter and return home safe.

The day I expected finally came. When I stood at the starting line, I felt excited but a little nervous. I tried my best to follow others. After running about two kilometers, I felt tired, but I thought I could overcome it. To my disappointment, about five kilometers, I found I couldn’t stick to it any more. “ Do I give up the game ” I asked myself. The answer was definitely a no. I slowed down so that I could feel better.
“Come on, boy! You can make it,” a man shouted. I was grateful to him for his words. I went on running. However, I had to give up after ten kilometers because I was really out of breath. What’s more, I felt sharp pain in my feet and legs. I was so upset when I got home. My dad gave me a hug and said, “My boy, don’t lose heart! You’ve done better than the last time. 【答案】Para. 1:
Actually, it took too long to see results from daily watering, various results. Planting the seeds was exciting for many students, the growing part much less so. Most kids lost patience and interest. As a result, they forgot to care for their sunflowers-to-be. But not William. Every afternoon, William made sure all the containers were watered and nurtured.
Para. 2:
About a month into the summer vacation, I happened to drive by the library. I found William was there and he told me that he wanted to learn more about sunflower. By the last week of school, the shoots were about four inches tall, which really amazed me. In years past, few seeds successfully produced new shoots. And those that did had never gotten so tall. But these were different. These were William’s sunflowers. His is what it means to be a teacher. At that moment, I knew I didn’t have to concern William. I’d seen that special seed planted inside him. Others would too. And, one day, he’d start to grow mature and shine — just like his sunflowers.

【答案】Para.1
The bird struggled weakly and made a wild, strange noise. The sound made Ben’s heart ache. It seemed as if he could sense the bird’s fear and helplessness. Holding the bird tightly in his arms, Ben knew that he just couldn’t give up on this tiny life. He raised his eyes and looked directly into the hunter’s. The firm and steady gaze sent a strong message to the hunter that by no means would he give in. There was a suffocating silence between the two men. Eventually, the hunter’s rough voice broke the silence. “You are a fool.” And then to Ben’s great relief, he slowly walked away.
Para.2
Ben watched until he was gone and went to the house. He carefully laid the bird on the soft pillow, applied some medicine to the wound and bandaged its broken wing. Smoothing its beautiful feathers, he murmured in a soft voice to the bird, “You’re going to Okay and soon you will be able to fly in the sky.” Under his careful nursing, the bird recovered sooner than expected and in the meantime, a special bond seemed to be formed between the man and the bird. With the bird finally made its full recovery, Ben knew it was time to set it free. Though reluctant, watching the bird flapping its wings and soaring high into the sky, Ben smiled. The frozen lake, the quiet woods and the flying bird made the place a paradise.
