I always felt sorry for the people in wheelchairs. Some people, old and weak, cannot get around by themselves. Others seem perfectly healthy, dressed in business suits. But whenever I saw someone in a wheelchair, I only saw a disability, not a person.
Then I fainted at Euro Disney due to low blood pressure. This was the first time I had ever fainted, and my parents said that I must rest for a while after First Aid. I agreed to take it easy but, as I stepped towards the door, I saw my dad pushing a wheelchair in my direction! Feeling the color burn my cheeks, I asked him to wheel that thing right back to where he found it.
I could not believe this was happening to me. Wheelchairs were fine for other people but not for me, as my father wheeled me out into the main street, people immediately began to treat me differently.
Little kids ran in front of me, forcing my father to stop the wheelchair suddenly. Bitterness set in as I was thrown back and forth. “Stupid kids-they have perfectly good legs. Why can’t they watch where they are going ” I thought. People stared down at me, with pity in their eyes. Then they would look away, maybe because they thought the sooner they forgot me, the better.
“I am just like you!” I wanted to scream. “The only difference is you’ve got legs, and I have wheels.”
People in wheelchairs are not stupid. They see every look and hear each word. Looking out at the faces, I finally understood: I was once just like them. I treated people in wheelchairs exactly the way they did not want to be treated. I realized it is some of us with two healthy legs who are truly disabled.

B.The Wheels Are as Good as Two Legs
C.People with Two Legs Are Truly Healthy
D.The Difference between Healthy People and the Disabled

Most of us spend all day at school or work. After a long and busy day, all we want to do is to return to a comfortable home. Smart technology can turn any home into a nicer place to live in.
Smart homes have been around for some time. Scottish company Pico Electronics invented a type of technology called X10 in 1975. It allows household devices, such as lights and alarms, to communicate with each other by using radio waves, according to AVSytemsMag, a specialized magazine in the audiovisual and automation(视听及自动化) industry.
Of course, 5G network connectivity has made smart homes more convenient and more sophisticated(复杂的) than X10. Perhaps the most widespread smart home technology is the voice-activated assistant(语音激活助手).Google Home and Amazon's Alexa allow users to control nearly any device in their home simply by speaking a few words. This is especially convenient for people with physical disabilities, as they can finish tasks that would normally be too difficult, according to How-To Geek.
Common household appliances(家用电器) can become “smart” as well. For example, a smart trash bin can memorize all the things you’ve thrown away and offer you a shopping list online, while a smart fridge can create dinner recipes(菜谱) based on the vegetables that are being kept inside, according to HowStuffWorks.
But it's not just about convenience. Smart homes are also good for the environment. By regularly checking your energy use and automatically turning off lights and other devices that you’re not using, smart homes can lower how much electricity you use overall. Using less energy means that we make less pollution, which is good for the environment.
Not everyone is excited about smart homes. In fact…
7.X10 allows household devices to communicate by .

A.Smart trash bins help us find cheap but nice things online.
B.Smart fridges can create proper recipes and cook tasty food.
C.Smart homes will help us save energy and reduce pollution.
D.Smart homes make us stay at home instead of working out.
10.The author may introduce the of smart homes in the last paragraph.

On May 22,2021, people in China and around the world felt sad. China’s “father of hybrid rice (杂交水稻)” Yuan Longping died at 91 on this day. He is one of the greatest scientists around the world.
Yuan has devoted his life to inventing hybrid rice, which ended hunger for millions of people not only in China, but around the world. With his efforts, hybrid rice is grown in 57 percent of China’s rice fields. The increased yield(产量) feeds an extra 80 million people a year. It is also grown in over 40 countries, including India, the US and Brazil.
Yuan grew up in a time of war and hunger. He kept on studying agriculture in college, even though his mother didn’t support his decision at first. “I told my parents that having enough food was people’s most important thing, ”Yuan wrote in an article. “Finally, my parents consented.” After graduation, he worked as a teacher at an agriculture school in Hunan. After seeing many people die of hunger during a serious famine(饥荒) that lasted from 1959 to 1961, he decided to study hybrid rice.
Back then, people thought rice couldn't be crossed (杂交) with other plants. But Yuan decided to challenge this. He spent four years looking for a kind of wild rice that could be crossed. In 1964, he found it! Nine years later, he succeeded in growing the world's first high yield hybrid rice. It could reach a yield of over 500 kg per mu, higher than the 300 kg yields from normal rice.
After that, he kept working and making new breakthroughs. In 2020, hybrid rice developed by Yuan's team achieved a yield of 22.5 tons per hectare(公顷) in two growing seasons, setting a new world record. His team started to research growing salt tolerant(耐盐的) rice, also known as seawater rice, in 2016. Their experiment succeeded in 2017.
Yuan once said he had two dreams. One was to enjoy the shade under rice crops that were taller than men. The other was that hybrid rice would be grown all over the world. With the efforts of future generations, his dreams might come true one day.
