African elephants are the largest land animals on the Earth. They are a little larger than their Asian cousins and you can tell from their larger ears that they are African elephants. Africa is quite a hot place. Animals always have their own ways to keep cool. The ears of elephants are like fans and they can help keep these large animals cool, but sometimes the African heat is too much. Therefore elephants also do other activities to keep themselves cooler. For example, elephants are fond of water and enjoy showering by sucking water into their trunks and spraying it all over themselves.
An elephant's trunk is a long nose which is used for smelling, breathing, drinking, and also for grabbing (抓取) things. African elephants have two features(特征),which are like fingers on the end of their trunk. So the elephants can use them to grab small things.
Elephants eat roots, grasses and fruit. An adult elephant can eat up to 300 pounds (136 kilograms) of food in a single day. These hungry animals do not sleep much, and they walk great distances when they look for the large quantities of food that they need to keep up their large bodies.

Zhalong is a nature reserve in Heilongjiang in northeast China. It is one of the world's most important wetlands. The area provides food and shelter for wildlife. It is an ideal home for different kinds of plants, fish and birds.
Many birds live comfortably in Zhalong Nature Reserve all year round, while some only stay for a short time. There are many fish in the wetlands, and the birds can easily catch them for food. Zhalong Nature Reserve is an important living area for the rare red- crowned cranes. There are not many red-crowned cranes in the world. Some of them live in Zhalong.
Some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings. This means that there will be less and less space for wildlife.
More and more birds are in danger because they do not have enough living space. Many of them died. The Chinese government wants to protect these endangered birds, and they can be safe in Zhalong.
Every year a lot of tourists go to Zhalong to watch birds. This year members of our Bird Watching Club are going to study the different kinds of birds in Zhalong and the changes in their numbers. The study begins next month.
We do a bird count once a year, We are now inviting secondary school students to help. We need more people to help us count and do something to help the birds. The environment is becoming worse and worse. There are many kinds of pollution I worry about. The most serious two are water pollution and air pollution, because people can't live healthily with dirty water and polluted air, nor can animals. More and more diseases are caused by polluted air.
I think factories should not pour dirty water into the river directly or produce more waste gas. We'd better go on foot or by bike instead of by car, because more cars mean more waste gas. We should make our world more and more beautiful.
