Holding conversations may not seem like a skill. After all, everyone can talk to other people. But talking to strangers makes many people nervous. Here are some ways to make conversations more fun and less embarrassed.
.
As strange as it may seem, a lot of communication happens without any words. The way you stand and act tells people a lot about you. When you’re talking with someone, stand up straight and look at him or her in the eye. This shows that you’re confident. Acting like you’re confident can help you feel more confident.
Back and forth
A good conversation is not a speech. In a conversation, both people need to take part in it. If you’re doing all the talking, stop to give the other person time to say. If he or she doesn’t say anything, try asking him or her a question.
Questions can also help if you’re struggling (努力) to think of something to say. If you ask the other person a question, he or she will talk for a while. Maybe he or she will say something you are interested in. People are generally excited to find others with similar interests.
When you ask questions, try to come up with open-ended ones. Open-ended questions in English usually start with who, what, when, where and why.
Don’t fear silence
Don’t fear if the conversation has quiet moments. Every conversation has some. Think of them as chances to change the subject to something you’re interested in.
With the passing of time, your skill at holding conversations will improve. So if you’re shy, be brave, ask a question and then start a conversation.
