Last year Justin met a great difficulty in his life: Where should he work after graduation He had two
great offers. The first was a government job in his hometown, a 10-minute bike ride from his apartment. It
wouldn’t pay much, but he’d have time to spend with his wife, nephew, and aging parents. The second was a
job in the biggest neighboring city. It would pay a lot more, but he’d have to travel four hours a day.
We know surprisingly little about how people do when they make more money at the expense of having
less time or have more time at the expense of earning less money. My colleagues-PhD student Lucia

Macchia, Professor Elizabeth Dunn and I set out to do a study. We asked more than 1,000 college students.
What we found was that students who prioritized time were happier than those who prioritized money.
Those who valued time were happier and more satisfied with their lives and careers one to two years after
graduation.
People who live in more unequal areas feel less financially secure and are more likely to value money.
People who grew up in families fighting about money also are more likely to focus on money instead of time
as adults, even if they now have a lot of money. Of course, debt also plays a role.
Sometimes we cannot choose our priorities; we might need to choose the better-paying job and sacrifice
(牺牲) having more time to socialize with our friends and family. Society needs to work harder to make us
all feel like we have the choice to prioritize time over money. However, when we do have the ability to
choose which resource to prioritize, the data is clear: Valuing time is likely to bring us greater joy both in the
moment and in the long term.
28.What can we know about Justin from paragraph 1
A.He tried hard to find a well-paid job.
B.He had to make a great decision in life.
C.He was unwilling to leave his family.
D.He had trouble in graduating from college.
29.Which of the following can explain the underlined word “prioritized” in paragraph 2
A.Took...further. B.Spent...wisely. C.Put...first. D.Saved...gradually.
30.What plays a role in people’s valuing money over time
A.Their educational experiences.
B.Their family backgrounds.
C.Their parents’ attitude towards them.
D.Their relationship with people in their area.
31.What is the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph
A.To draw a conclusion. B.To conduct a survey.
C.To make a prediction. D.To offer a choice.

In a study involving sweat samples(样本) from 335 people, trained dogs sniffed out 97 percent of the
coronavirus cases that had been identified by PCR tests and all 31 COVID-19 cases among 192 people who
didn’t have symptoms, researchers reported.
These findings are evidence that dogs could be effective for mass screening efforts at places such as
airports or concerts and may provide friendly alternatives for testing people who fear the tests, says
Dominique Grandjean in France.
Dogs’ noses also identified more COVID-19 cases than did antigen (抗原) tests, but sometimes mistook
another virus for the coronavirus, Grandjean and colleagues found. What’s more, evidence suggests the dogs
can pick up cases 48 hours before people test positive by PCR.
In the study, dogs were trained in coronavirus detection by rewarding them with toys—usually tennis
balls. “It’s playtime for them,” Grandjean says. It takes about three to six weeks, depending on the dog’s
experience with odor detection, to train a dog to pick out COVID-19 cases from sweat samples. For
detection, the dogs sniffed used face masks or housing sweat samples collected from human volunteers’
underarms. Results showed that dogs perform as well as or even better than PCR tests for detecting the virus
that causes COVID-19, Furton says. He and colleagues have used dogs at schools, a music festival and in a
small trial screening airline employees for coronavirus infections.
One of the biggest advantages dogs have over other tests is their speed, Furton says. “Even with what
we call a rapid test, you’re still going to have to wait tens of minutes or even hours, where the dog in a
matter of seconds can make a response.” However, dogs take time to train and there currently aren’t even
enough dogs trained to detect explosives, let alone diseases, Otto says.
Another drawback is that people don’t think of them as high-tech, though they’re one of the highest-tech
devices we have.
32.What can we learn about the study from the first paragraph
A.Dogs were trained to test COVID-19.
B.Sweat samples are perfect to test COVID-19.
C.Dogs can identify most COVID-19 cases.
D.PCR tests failed to meet public expectation.
33.What’s the disadvantage of using dogs for COVID-19 tests
A.Dogs may be unfriendly to people when doing tests.
B.Dogs lack experience dealing with large screens.
C.Dogs may need a long time to identify the disease.
D.Dogs may recognize other diseases as coronavirus.
34.What can we infer about trained dogs according to Furton
A.They perform well at detecting COVID-19 virus.
B.They do better at detecting explosives than viruses.
C.They are widely used in public places like schools.
D.They like to be rewarded with toys after training.
35.How does Otto view getting dogs to do COVID-19 tests
A.Supportive. B.Disapproving. C.Fearful. D.Confident.

Good friendship can get people through almost anything. Many times, a good friend will know what
you need before you even ask for it, and they’ll want to offer a helping hand. That’s what happened to two
friends in Caddo Hills High School. When one differently abled young man needed help, his friend went
above and beyond.
When Brandon and Tanner met, Brandon was using a hand-push wheelchair. The chair was becoming
kind of a pain for Brandon as he had to push his way down the halls from class to class around Caddo Hills
High School. “My arms would get really tired and I would have to stop and take rests,” said Brandon.
Sometimes when they were together, Brandon would ask Tanner to push his wheelchair. Tanner was
happy to help. Most often, Tanner would offer to help and he noticed how hard using this wheelchair was on
his friend. Tanner thought that if his friend had had an electric wheelchair, life would be easier for him. But
Brandon’s family was unable to afford it. Seeing how much his friend struggled in his wheelchair, Tanner
made up his mind to do something about it. “He’s just been a really good friend and I wanted to do him a
favor. I just felt like I needed to do it and I wanted to do it,” Tanner explained.
Then the enthusiastic(热心的)high school student became devoted to getting his friend a wheelchair. He
got an after-school job at an auto repair shop and he worked there every afternoon. In order to help his friend
out, Tanner worked part-time for two years. All of the money he earned went towards saving for a
self-powered wheelchair. That moment finally came in late February, when he would present Brandon with a
life-changing gift during the school day.

根据第三段内容“Dogs’ noses also identified more COVID-19 cases than did antigen tests, but sometimes mistook another virus for the coronavirus, Grandjean and colleagues found.(Grandjean和同事们发现,狗的鼻子也比抗原测试能识别更多的COVID-19病例,但有时会把另一种病毒误认为冠状病毒。)”
根据第四段内容“Results showed that dogs perform as well as or even better than PCR tests for detecting the virus that causes COVID-19, Furton says.(Furton说,结果显示,在检测导致COVID-19的病毒方面,狗狗的表现与PCR测试一样好,甚至更好。)” 故选A项。
根据文章第五段内容“However, dogs take time to train and there currently aren’t even enough dogs trained to detect explosives, let alone diseases, Otto says.(然而,Otto说,狗需要时间来训练,目前甚至没有足够的狗训练来探测爆炸物,更不用说疾病了。)”

37.根据上文“It can be helpful to reflect on how your family has dealt with mistakes and forgiveness while you were growing up.(回想一下在你成长的过程中,你的家人是如何处理错误和宽恕的,这会很有帮助。)” F项“Has your family modelled what an apology sounds like (你的家人树立的道歉的榜样吗 )”符合语境,这里“family”与F项中“your family modelled”形成对应关系。故选F项。

39.上文“Although you might regret your actions and feel all the feelings, this is not a time or place when they should be comforting you.(虽然你可能会后悔你的行为,并感受到所有的感觉,但这不是他们应该安慰你的时间或地点。)”以及下文“It’s about them and their hurt.(这是关于他们和他们的伤害。)”
40.上文“An apology is not a magic cure.(道歉不是灵丹妙药。)”以及下文“It will take time for the relationship to repair and perhaps shift into its new dynamic (动态). (破裂的关系需要时间来修复,或许还需要时间来进入新的互动了解)”可知,本段主要指出我们不能指望道歉来修复一切,因为道歉不是灵丹妙药,缓和关系需要时间,即有时并不会因为我们道了歉,一切不愉快就马上恢复正常。G项“Just because you apologized, it doesn’t mean everything will go back to normal.(你道歉了,并不意味着一切都会恢复正常。)”
