An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.
Fragile items，like those made of glass should usually be placed on a lower surface，near the ground instead of placing them on cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed，sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement，these pieces will fall on the floor directly and on you.
There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire breakouts during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.
During an earthquake，lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the staircases at all times.
If you are outdoors，do not take shelter under a tree，streetlights，electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving，stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.

Seeing a volcano erupt is a wonderful experience，and you can really feel the heat by climbing to the summit (山顶) of Pacaya for a close－up view. There are guided tours every day up this highly active volcano from Antigua，giving travelers a chance to see Mother Nature at her most powerful.
Pacaya is an easy drive from Antigua，a beautiful city with many colorful houses along its old streets that are turned into art－works during its Holy Week Festival. No matter when you come to Antigua，you won’t miss the Pacaya－tour companies.
But climbing Pacaya is no easy job：it is 2，560 metres high，and reaching the summit takes two to three hours of seemingly one step－forward and two－step－back movements. As you climb，you hear the dull sounds of eruptions high above. Steaming，hot remains from recent eruptions begin to line the path as you near the active summit：the McKenney Cone (火山锥) . Just as though you are going to walk over to the edge of the cone，the road turns to the left and up to the relative safety of the old，inactive summit.
Many tours are timed so that you arrive at the cone of the volcano in plenty of time for sunset and the full contrast between the erupting red lava and the darkening sky. On a good day the view from the summit is extremely exciting. The active mouth boils，sending red lava over its sides，and once in a while shoots hot streams up to 100 metres into the air. There is a strong bad smell in the air even if you take care to be upwind of the cone. As evening turns deeper into the night，the burning lava quietly falls down the side of the volcano. A group of scientists is gathering today in the U. K. to discuss a thick piece of ice that’s cracking in Antarctica，which is of the size of Delaware.
The ice shelf is called Larsen C，and it now has a 90－mile crack running through it. The big rift (裂缝) is slicing the ice shelf from top to bottom. But this is not just another sad climate change story. It’s more complicated. “A lot of things are going on deep inside the ice，” says Adrian Luckman，a glaciologist.
Luckman says climate change is certainly influencing this region. Larsen C used to have two neighbors to the north，Larsen A and Larsen B. As the air and water warmed，those ice shelves started melting and then disappeared in 1995 and 2002. But the crack in Larsen C seems to have happened on its own，for different reasons.
Larsen C has many cracks. All ice shelves do. This particular crack has been around since at least the 1960s. The unusual part is that in 2014，this crack—and only this crack—started growing quickly. Why
“Well，that is a little bit of a mystery and that’s why it drew itself to our attention，” says Luckman. One puzzling aspect is how it managed to cut through areas of softer ice that bind (连接) the ice from neighboring glaciers into one giant sheet. Starting in 2014，that soft ice did very little to slow down this rift.
Scientists are split on how important this crack is for the stability of the whole ice shelf. Some say if this giant section breaks off，it won’t make a difference. Others disagree.
“Ice shelves are the gates of Antarctica in a way，and the gatekeepers of Antarctica. The ice shelves are already floating，so if they fall apart it does not immediately affect sea levels. It’s what they hold back－water from all the inland glaciers—that could be problematic. If all the water packed in those glaciers made their way to the sea，it could significantly raise global sea levels，” says Ala Khazendar，a geophysicist.

Hello，everyone，I’m Monica. I’m from New Zealand. New Zealand is an amazing tourist resort. For people going to New Zealand，there are three or four places that they must see. It depends on what you’re looking for really.
A lot of people that come to New Zealand enjoy an outdoor lifestyle，so there are lots of outdoor activities and places you can go to enjoy. In particular，there are two ice mountains there. You can visit them on foot，or pay for a helicopter ride that will show you a bird’s eye view of them. If you want to see rural New Zealand，it’s a good idea to drive through the country as you will be able to see the farms，particularly in the lower part of the South Island. There are a lot of sheep and cattle as well，so I think it’s a good idea to go for a drive and see them in person. Another thing I’d strongly recommend is to go to a city like Rotorua，which is in the center of the North Island，to experience Maori culture. There’s a Maori village and you can listen to Maori songs and see the hot springs and mud pools there.
