Step II Listening (2a, 2b)
In this procedure, students will listen to a conversation first. In the conversation, Dave introduces his friend Lin Hai to his family members. Ask students to listen to the conversation and do Activities 2a and 2b.
T: Now please listen to the tape of and circle the family members you hear.
Play the tape for the first time and check the answers. Then ask students to look at the picture in 2b and listen to the recording again and match the names with the people in the picture.
T: OK! Let’s look at the picture of 2b. There are many people in it. This is a picture of Dave’s family. We know “a” is Dave. But we don’t know who Mary is who is Jim and who is Lin Hai. Let’s listen the tape again and find them, please!

I. To ask or not to ask
In North America when people meet each other for the first time, they talk about things like their families, work, school or sports. They ask questions as follows:
◎ Do you have any brothers or sisters
◎ Where do you work
◎ Which school do you go to
◎ Do you like sports
These are polite questions. They are not personal or private. But some things are personal or private, and questions about them are not polite. For example:

在Unit 1中我们提到过介绍别人的句型是:This is …(近指),远指时也可用:That is…,如果介绍的人是两个或两个以上时,要用:These are…或者Those are…。其它介绍别人的方法还有:I’d like you to meet…或者May I introduce… 这种句型比较正式、比较谦恭些。熟人之间一般不这么用,因为显得生疏。一般是要把一位长辈或者大人物介绍给别人时,要用到这种正式的句型。当把家人介绍给别人时,一般遵循由长辈到同辈到晚辈的顺序,而不会以职位高低为顺序,当让在英国这个仍然保持贵族传统的国家,如果对方在介绍家人时以社会地位的高低为顺序也不足为奇。社交礼仪中有一条黄金原则:介绍朋友时,你应集中精力去记住人家的名字。在以后的交往中,一见面就能叫出对方的名字,别人会认为你很热情,很友好。如果受邀在别人家做客,当人家把家人介绍给自己后, 也应该尽量记住家人的名字并且要礼貌的称呼,这样你将会再次受到邀请。顺便说一句:受邀去别人家做客,最好提前几分钟到达,到早了或者到晚了都是不礼貌的;同时最好带点小礼物,如:一束花、一盒巧克力等等,礼物不能太贵重,因为那将给主人带来心理压力。
