Recognized as the largest desert in the world, the Sahara runs across North Africa, Covering over 3 million square miles from the Atlantic Coast to the Nile River Valley. Except for an occasional oasis(绿洲), this vast land is mainly made up of sand, stones, and worn out mountains. The burning sun causes daytime temperatures to rise to 70 degrees in the shade, and days without rain commonly last for years.
Paintings found on the walls of caves in the Sahara Desert suggest that a few thousand years ago, large quantities of plants grew there and covered the desert floor. Many curious and unusual insects, birds and animals got enough food that allowed them to grow and reproduce. At that time, huge river systems and many oases supported growing communities(社团,社区) where a large number of people lived.
Research scientists believe that the land became a desert for several reasons. For centuries people there have wandered from place to place in search of food, water and grazing(吃草)land for their animals. These people have always considered the number of animals they have as a sign of wealth. It is considered more important to have 100 sick and starving animals than 15 healthy ones. The large herds (群)have been allowed to go freely and graze on desert plants and grass. Over time, large sections of land have been left uncovered. In addition to allowing overgrazing, these people cut down whatever trees they could find and used them for firewood. The sand was unable to hold on to the great heat of the day, so nightting temperatures often drop below freezing and nothing was left to hold the soil together.
Scientists have been studying different ways to bring back the green desert. Through research and experiments, they hope to be able to produce plants that will once again support the life there. Huge holes filled with much water lie under the desert surface. Scientists believe this rainwater simply flew down through the sand over hundreds of years and collected in the big, rocky holding tanks. By making use of the sun’s power, scientists in the Sahara have made experiments in which they got huge amount of electricity. This electricity was then used to operate drilling machines and pumps to pull the rainwater from the underground tanks. By drilling the hole one mile deep into the floor of the desert, one machine was able to recover more than 80 gallons of ice—cold water each second, or 288,000 gallons per hour.
Scientists have had some success turning this wasteland into useful farmland. Today the desert is dotted with huge wheat fields watered by a system of pipes that carry water from the underground tanks. Farmers have also learnt that plants grow better if seeds are planted next to stones. Studies show that stones provide protection from the sun, allowing seeds to grow in a shady and cool environment. In addition to that, greenhouses have been built to protect plants from the sunshine so that less water is needed. Another idea is to grow plants that can live on a diet of salt water, since the ocean is so near to the desert.
1. What will probably happen if the local people continue their customs and traditions
A. The desert will continue to be enlarged.
B. Tourists will begin traveling to North Africa.
C. More oases will begin to appear across the desert.
D. The number of healthy animals will become larger.

3. The author of the passage provides evidences (证据)that scientists are .
A. pleased by the progress but do not have the money to continue
B. discouraged by the poor results of their experiments
C. hopeful about the chances of life coming back to the desert
D. troubled by the lack of water found underground
4. Which of the following is the best summary of this passage
A. Drilling machines help to water the desert floor and make plants and animals alive.
B.Scientists have been able to turn this large wasteland into a successful farming community.
C. So much soil has become sand that the desert will never be able to support life as it once did.
D. The desert no longer supports plenty of life, but researchers hope to change it with new scientific techniques.

Many people eventually get round to trading in their first car. But not Mike Harrison. He loves his 1931 black Bentley sports car so much that he’s still driving it – 54 years after be bought it.
Mr Harrison was 20 when he paid 150 (about 3,000 now) for the car after passing his test in 1956. It had already done 85,000 miles and he has since driven it a further 100,000, yet the car still runs like clockwork.
It is now one of only three left in the country and is worth 250,000. Despite its value, Mr Harrison, 74, says he would never sell the car “which has been my best friend and part of my family all my life”.
Mr Harrison courted his wife Jenny in it during the early sixties and it was their family car when children Caroline, now 46, and Ben, 42, came along. Even when he took a job as an advertising executive which came with the company car of his choice, Mr Harrison kept the Bentley.
He said: 'How many people still have their first car these days when everything is so disposable But it is a real eye-catcher. It has something that modern cars just don't have - style and character. 'I still drive it most days, even though it only does about 15 miles to the gallon!' Petrol was just six shillings (30p) a gallon when Mr Harrison bought the Bentley, which had a top speed of 120mph.
He has spent thousands of pounds on repairs over the years but has kept the bodywork in good condition himself, hand-painting the underneath and spraying the black panels of the bodywork.
For decades the Bentley was a regular sight on the roads near Mr Harrison's home in Hampton Court, Surrey. He now uses it as a runaround after retiring to Whitney-on-Wye, Herefordshire.
Mrs Harrison, 71, said: “It was a nuisance(累赘) keeping it in tip-top order with me helping out with the repairs by passing Mike the spanners the whole time. But I wouldn't have changed any of it --- I feel like a Queen every time I'm in it.”
1. When Mike Harrison bought his black Bentley sports car, it was .
A. a hand – made car B. a second – hand car
C. one of only three left D. unique in style
2. Mike Harrison would never sell the car mainly because .
A. it has witnessed his life and his family B. it is very eye – catching
C. it has save much oil D. it runs very fast

3. It can be concluded from the passage that the car .
A. has cost more for repairs than it is worth
B. has almost been retired
C. has caused much trouble to Mrs. Harrison.
D. is priceless to the family
由第三段 “It is now one of only three left in the country and is worth 250,000.”和第六段 “He has spent thousands of pounds on repairs over the years …” 由最后一段最后一句话 “But I wouldn't have changed any of it --- I feel like a Queen every time I'm in it.”
4. What’s the main purpose of this writing

Which is safer --- staying at home, traveling to work on public transport, or working at the office Surprisingly, each of these carries the same risk, which is very low. However, what about flying compared to working in the chemical industry Unfortunately, the former is 65 times riskier than the latter! In fact the accident rate of workers in the chemical industry is less than that of almost any of human activity, and almost as safe as staying at home.
The trouble with the chemical industry is that when things go wrong they often cause death to those living nearby. It is this that chemical accidents so newsworthy. Fortunately, they are extremely rare. The most famous ones happened at Texas City (1947), Flixborough (1974), Seveso (1976), Pemex (1984) and Bhopal (1984).
Some of these are always in the minds of the people even though the loss of life was small. No one died at Seveso, and only 28 workers at Flixborough. The worst accident of all was Bhopal, where up to 3,000 were killed. The Texas City explosion of fertilizer killed 552. The Pemex fire at a storage plant for natural gas in the suburbs of Mexico City took 542 lives, just a month before the unfortunate event at Bhopal.
Some experts have discussed these accidents and used each accident to illustrate a particular danger. Thus the Texas City was caused by tons of ammonium nitrate, which is safe unless stored in a great quantity. The Flixborough fireball was the fault of management, which took risks to keep production going during essential repairs. The Seveso accident shows what happens if the local authorities lack knowledge of the danger on their doorstep. When the poisonous gas drifted over the town, local leaders were incapable of taking effective action. The Pemex fire was made worse by an overloaded site in an overcrowded suburb. The fire set off a chain reaction of exploding storage tanks. Yet, by a miracle, the two largest tanks did not explode. Had these caught fire, then 3,000 strong rescue team and fire fighters would all have died.

A. Working at the office is safer than staying at home.
B. Travelling to work on public transport is safer than working at the office.
C. Staying at home is safer than working in the chemical industry.

11. From the passage we know that ammonium nitrate is a kind of _____.
A. natural gas, which can easily catch fire
B. fertilizer, which can't be stored in a great quantity
C. poisonous substance, which can't be used in overcrowded areas
D. fuel, which is stored in large tanks
12. From the discussion among some experts we may conclude that _____.
A. to avoid any accident we should not repair the facilities in chemical industry
B. the local authorities should not be concerned with the production of the
chemical industry
C. all these accidents could have been avoided or controlled if effective measures
had been taken
D. natural gas stored in very large tanks is always safe

Phil White has just returned from an 18,000 mile, around the world bicycle trip. White had two reasons for making this epic journey. First of all, he wanted to use the trip to raise money for charity, which he did. He raised £70,000 for the British charity, Oxfam. White's second reason for making the trip was to break the world record and become the fastest person to cycle around the world. He is still waiting to find out if he has broken the record or not.
White set off from Trafalgar Square, in London, on 19th June 2004 and was back 299 days later. He spent more than 1,300 hours in the saddle (车座) and destroyed four sets of tyres and three bike chains. He had the adventure of his life crossing Europe, the Middle East, India, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Americas. Amazingly, he did all of this with absolutely no support team. No jeep carrying food, water and medicine. No doctor. Nothing! Just a bike and a very, very long road.
The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts, through jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45 degrees, all to help people in need. There were other dangers along the road. In Iran, he was chased by armed robbers and was lucky to escape with his life and the little money he had. The worst thing that happened to him was having to cycle into a headwind on a road that crosses the south of Australia. For 1,000 kilometres he battled against the wind that was constantly pushing him. This part of the trip was slow, hard work and depressing, but he made it in the end. Now Mr. White is back and intends to write a book about his adventures.

America’s population was booming and spreading west in the early 1800’s. Westward expansion came mostly at the expense of the Indians who were often forced to move from their native lands.
In the state of Georgia, the population increased 600 percent in the matter of 40 years. As a result, many of its native tribes(部落) were pushed out. The Cherokee Indians, of western Georgia had managed to keep their land until gold was discovered in their territory in 1828. In 1830, however, president Andrew Jackson authorized (批准) the Indian Removal Act. The Cherokees fought the law, and it was overturned by chief justice John Marshall two years later.
Just three years later, however, in 1835, the Treaty of New Echota was signed. The "Treaty" was not authorized by the Cherokee Nation, but rather, a small group of Cherokee radicals led by John Ridge. Under the "Treaty", the Cherokee were to leave Georgia and the government would compensate them at a price determined to be about 5 percent of the value of the land. The majority of the Cherokee Nation would never had agreed to the "Treaty", but the U.S. government ratified it anyway. John Ridge was thus seen as a traitor by the Cherokees - and would later pay with his life. The Georgia government then staged a "land lottery" in which Cherokee land was divided into 160 equal portions. They were sold to anyone who had $4.00 and who had won a chance to own land.
In 1838, General Winfield Scott and 7,000 troops invaded Cherokee land. Men, women, and children were forced to walk westward from Georgia nearly 1,000 miles with minimal facilities and food, to reservations set up for them in Oklahoma. Cherokee chief John Ross, eventually was able to convince Winfield Scott that his people should lead the tribe west. Scott agreed and Ross divided the people into smaller groups so they could forage for food on their own. Although Ross may have save countless lives, nearly 4,000 Indians died walking this Trail of Tears.
1. Which of the following happened first
A. Cherokees’ walk to Oklahoma. B. The Indian Removal Act.
C. The Treaty of New Echota. D. The Georgia “Land Lottery”.
由文章第二段倒数第二句话 “In 1830, however, president Andrew Jackson authorized the Indian Removal Act.”可知,B选项发生在1830年;由第三段第一句话 “Just three years later, however, in 1835, the Treaty of New Echota was signed.”可知,C选项发生在1835年;由第三段倒数第二句话 “The Georgia government then staged a ‘land lottery’ in which Cherokee land was divided into 160 equal portions.”可知,D选项发生在Treaty of New Echota后; 由最后一段前两句话 “ In 1838, General Winfield Scott and 7,000 troops invaded Cherokee land. …set up for them in Oklahoma.”
2. The underlined part “ratified it” (in Para. 3) can be replaced by “ ”.
A. made it official B. signed it secretly
C. removed it D. ignored it
结合该短语出现的句子 “The majority of the Cherokee Nation would never had agreed to the ‘Treaty’, but the U.S. government ratified it anyway.”, “ratified it” 出现在 “but” 后面,可见该短语和前面的never had agreed to the “Treaty" 意思相反,故答案为A,使条约正式化。
3. Why was John Ridge viewed as a traitor by the Cherokees
A. Because he sold his land to the U.S.Government at a low price.
B. Because he represented the U.S. Govermment.
C. Because he signed an unfair treaty for the Cherokees.
D. Because he carried out a “land lottery” in Georgia.
4. According to the passage, what is the key factor for the “Trail of Tears”
A. The conflict between the Cherokees and the local government.
B. The increase of population in the state of Georgia.
C. The constant struggle for land between the native Americans and the settlers.
D. The discovery of gold in western Gerogia.
文章的最后提到 “nearly 4,000 Indians died walking this Trail of Tears”, 为什么会发生此事? 由文章第二段 “The Cherokee Indians, of western Georgia had managed to keep their land until gold was discovered in their territory in 1828.”

The literal meaning of philosophy is “love of wisdom”. But this meaning does not tell us very much. Unlike the other disciplines(学科),philosophy cannot be defined by what you study ,because it is actually unlimited. Anything can be the subject matter of philosophy: are, history, law, language, literature, mathematics, and in fact, the other academic disciplines are directly related to philosophy. For this reason you get a Doctorate(博士学位)of Philosophy (Ph. D.) in biochemistry, or computer science, or psychology.
Two broad sub-fields of philosophy are logic and the history of philosophy. Logic is the science of argument and critical thinking. It provides sound methods for distinguishing good from bad reasoning .The history of philosophy involves the study of major philosophers and period in the development of philosophy.
Of what use is philosophy First it is useful in educational advancement. It is necessary for understanding other disciplines. Only philosophy questions the nature of the concepts used in a discipline, and its relation to other discoveries. And through the study of philosophy, one develops sound methods of research and analysis that can be applied to any field.
There are a number of general uses of philosophy. It strengthens one’s ability to solve problems, to communicate, to organize ideas and issues, to persuade, and to take what is the most important form a large quantity of data. These general uses are of great benefit in the career field, not necessarily obtaining one’s first job after graduation, but for preparing for position of responsibility, management and leadership later on. It is very shortsighted after all, to take a course of studies only for the purpose of getting one’s first job. The useful skills developed through the study of philosophy have significant long-term benefits in career advancement. No other discipline systematically follows the ideals of wisdom, leadership, and capacity to resolve human conflict.

Explaining China’s peaceful growth to the American politicians and public will top President Hu Jintao’s agenda when he visits the United States from September 5 to 8.
“ This will be conductive to the development of Sino—US relations and China’s relationships with the rest of the world.” He Yafei, director of the Department of North American Affairs, said at a news briefing yesterday.
It will be Hu’s first State visit to the US after he became president in 2003. He will meet US President George W.Bush and legislators in Washington DC and business people in Seattle, and deliver a speech at Yale University in New Haven. Also on the list of areas of concern for Hu and Bush may be trade, Taiwan, energy and nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.
China’s favorable balance of trade with the US derives from different economic structures in the two countries. The two economies supplement and benefit each other instead of competing, and the US should loosen its grip over its exports, especially high-tech products, to China, he said.
After his US trip, President Hu will travel to Canada and Mexico from September 8 to 13, and back to New York on September 14 to attend the World Summit and other activities in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the United Nations.
Hu will wrap up his tour on September 16 at the UN in a show China’s support for the world body and multilateralism.
