On a day in Arkansas, some fishermen saw a bear cub(幼兽)in a tree. As hours went by, its mother didn’t return. So they called wildlife biologist(生物学家) Eastridge.
The bear cub was sick and hungry, weighing only 5 pounds and with his eyes not completely open. Eastridge called Lisa Stewart, who works at Appalachian Bear Rescue in Tennessee. Stewart always makes room for a new cub.
She named the bear Miracle because she thought it was a miracle that he had survived! As soon as she could, she stopped having contact with the cub so he would not become too used to humans. When the cub arrived, Stewart cleaned his eyes and put him in a house alone. Since Miracle was already 5 months old. Stewart gave him bowls of food and another bowl of a special formula(配方奶粉), similar to a bear mother’s milk. Sometimes, Miracle would reach his head out of his house and take some formula or food. But he wasn’t eating too much.
Miracle was too weak to be with other bears. So Stewart gave him a toy bear named Buddy. He took it into his house and covered it with straw(稻草). He fed Buddy, too. Stewart often found the toy covered in formula and berries and its ears full of apple chunks. Now that Miracle had Buddy, he came out of his house more often and wanted to eat.
After two months, Stewart introduced Miracle to other bears so they could learn from one another. She avoided any direct contact with Miracle and the other bears. Stewart wanted to make sure they stayed afraid of humans so they could go back into the wild again. She always hid behind a fence(栅栏) and threw food over the top secretly. The bears hunted for this food as they would soon do in the wild.
Five months later, Rick Eastridge returned to pick up a healthy 90-pound Miracle and another bear from Arkansas named Rocky. Eastridge loaded the bears into boxes on his truck and transported them back to the wild. As soon as the bear boxes were opened, the two cubs ran for the woods─where they belonged.

George was a game warden(猎物繁殖和旗保护区的管理员) in Kenya. One day, he found three tiny lions beside a dead lioness. They were so little that their eyes had not yet opened. Sadly, he took the three little lions and drove back home.
When George got out of the car with the baby lions, his wife Joy Adamson immediately took over. Joy had cared for many young animals over the years .but she had never tried to raise baby lions! However, she was determined to save these babies.
The lions grew rapidly. But as the lion grew bigger and stronger, Joy and George realized they could not keep three large lions. They decided to present two of the lions to a zoo; they would keep the smallest lion, which they named Elsa.
Joy and George taught Elsa to hunt and to protect herself. Elsa liked to play with her human friends, but as Elsa grew to her adult size, this play became dangerous. More than once, Elsa knocked Joy to the ground, scratching(抓伤) her. Joy and George both realized that it was lime to find Elsa a new home. They knew she needed a wild home where she could live the life she was horn to lead. Finally, Joy and George decided to set Elsa free in Meru Park at the foot of Mt. Kenya.
Elsa never forgot Joy and George. Whenever they camped nearby, Elsa would come to visits rubbing her head against their legs in greeting.
Joy missed Elsa, but was happy that she had made a successful life as a wild lion. Joy wrote a book about Elsa, Born Free, which became an international bestseller. Joy traveled all over the world, talking about the importance of saving the wild animals of the world.
Joy lived out her life in Africa, working with wild animals. She wrote more books about her experiences. How does an ecosystem(生态系统) work What makes the populations of different species the way they are Why are there so many flies and so few wolves To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats.
With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs. Most food webs, for instance, consist of many weak links rather than a few strong ones. When a predator(掠食动物) always eats huge numbers of a single prey(猎物), the two species are strongly linked; when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked. Food webs may be dominated by many weak links because that arrangement is more stable over the long term. If a predator can eat several species, it can survive the extinction of one of them. And if a predator can move on to another species that is easier to find when a prey species becomes rare, the switch allows the original prey to recover. The weak links may thus keep species from driving one another to extinction.
Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs may be unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s, scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack.
And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. In the ocean, we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land, we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.
Scientists have built an early-warning system based on mathematical models. Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human activities that are pushing an ecosystem toward a breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline. Prevention is key, scientists say because once ecosystems pass their tipping point(临界点), it is remarkably difficult for them to return.
8. What have scientists discovered with the help of mathematical models of food webs
A. The living habits of species in food webs.
B. The rules governing food webs of the ecosystems.
C. The approaches to studying the species in the ecosystems.
D. The differences between weak and strong links in food webs.
9. A strong link is found between two species when a predator ________.
A. has a wide food choice
B. can easily find new prey
C. sticks to one prey species
D. can quickly move to another place
10. What will happen if the populations of top predators in a food web greatly decline
A. The prey species they directly attack will die out.
B. The species they indirectly attack will turn into top predators.
C. The living environment of other species will remain unchanged.
D. The populations of other species will experience unexpected changes.
11. How does an early-warning system help us maintain the ecological balance
A. By getting illegal practices under control.
B. By stopping us from killing large predators.
C. By signaling the urgent need for taking preventive action.
D. By bringing the broken-down ecosystems back to normal.

More and more birds are flying to settle at Qinghai Lake, one of the highest inland lakes in China, thanks to the protection efforts of the local government. Covering an area of over 4,000 square kilometers, Qinghai Lake is also the country’s biggest salt lake.
Located in Northwest China’s Qinghai Province, the lake is famous for the two islands at its northwest point—Cormorant Island and Egg Island. The two islands have plenty of floating grass and various schools of fish, offering rich food sources to birds. The islands have become a dreamland for different kinds of groups of birds and have been called “Bird Islands”.
Each March and April, when ice and snow covering the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(高原) start to melt, over 20 kinds of birds fly to the Bird Islands to lay eggs. During the months, flocks of birds cover the whole sky over the islands and bird eggs can be found everywhere. Visitors can hear the singing of birds from miles away. These have become a world-famous symbol of the lake.
To protect this dreamland for birds and support calls for ecological protection, China set up the Qinghai Lake National Natural Reserve at the end of 1997.Meanwhile,the State has pointed out the Bird Islands and Spring Bay of Qinghai Lake were central protection zones.
Inspectors and conservators often patrol the lake, enriching local residents’ knowledge of related laws and spreading knowledge about animal protection to visitors. They are making great efforts to call on people to love and protect the birds. At the same time, they have built special fences around the island area to prevent wolves, foxes and other carnivorous animals, as well as illegal hunters from breaking up the birds’ building nests, laying eggs and breeding. As a result, more and more birds are coming to the islands for sheltering and breeding.
12.Why are more and more birds coming to the biggest salt lake in Northwest China
A.Because it is getting warmer and warmer.
B.Because it is being reformed.
C.Because environments there are getting more and more agreeable to them to live in.
D.Because the people there are becoming richer and richer.
13.What do the birds feed on
A.Floating fish and various grass.
B.Grass floating on the water surface and different kinds of fish.
C.Salt water and plenty of grains.
D.Corn from the local farmers.

C.Visitors can see the birds from miles away.
D.The government has taken many measures to protect the district.
15.Where is this passage most probably taken from
A.A newspaper. B.A document.
C.A storybook. D.A science book.
二、短文七选五:
Where Do Mosquitoes(蚊子)Go in Winter
Why do mosquitoes, everywhere in warmer months, disappear completely in winter? 1 Mosquitoes are cold blooded insects, meaning that they don't like the cold and prefer temperatures that are 80 degrees Fahrenheit (华氏温度) or more. When the temperature drops, they actually lose their ability to fly and become motionless.
2 They would never be able to fly far enough. The actual answer to the question is different for male and female mosquitoes.Male mosquitoes They die.But that's not just because of the cold.Male mosquitoes have far shorter lifespans(寿命) than females, and they die in autumn.
Female mosquitoes, though, can live through the winter. They hibernate (冬眠).In autumn, the females will go into hollow logs or cracks in the ground and enter this still state. 3 They put off their development, typically for months.
When it warms up again, the females will come out from hibernation. At this point, they're getting ready to lay their eggs and they need as much blood as possible to help the eggs develop. The females must find a blood meal to provide the protein needed by their eggs to develop, just in the time, when humans are outdoors in short sleeves enjoying the warming weather. 4
It actually doesn't have to be what we humans would consider “cold” to put a mosquito in danger. While these pests live actively when it's around 80 degrees F,most species can start heading into hibernation when it drops to around 50. 5 This is when female mosquitoes start looking for a place for sleep.
A.The obvious answer is that it's cold.
B.Now it's time for male mosquitoes to wake up.
C.It's only the female mosquitoes that are biting you.
D.Unlike birds, mosquitoes don't fly south for the winter.
E.Anything below 50 degrees is already too cold for most mosquitoes.
F.They carry on with life only when there is enough water for their needs.
G.They can hibernate for up to six months in freezing or waterless conditions.

It was dark, cold and raining on December 24. James left his office and walked slowly across the street to the parking place. He was very tired. He took out his car key and put down his umbrella. He put the key into the lock and turned it. Nothing happened. The door would not open. Then James realised that it was the wrong car. His car was red, but this one was dark blue. “Oh dear! I must have parked in a different place this morning,” he thought. Putting up his umbrella, he set off to look for his car. The rain poured down and the evening got colder and colder.
Having walked round all the side streets, James didn't find his car. He was exhausted and angry. “Someone must have stolen my car,” he thought. “Now I shall have to go to the police station and report it.” The policeman there was very helpful. He wrote down a description of James' car and then took his address and telephone number. As James was leaving, the policeman wished him a merry Christmas.
“Christmas!” thought James. “Oh no! I've forgotten all about Christmas. I haven't bought my wife a present and now all the shops are shut. What shall I do?” When waiting for the bus, he got wetter and more miserable (难受的). He had no umbrella and the rain flowed down into his collar. He felt like bursting into tears.
When James got home, he found his wife standing on a chair and looking for something in a very high cupboard. “What are you doing, Jessica?” he asked. “The big gold star for the Christmas tree,” Jessica replied. “Just a moment. I'll go into the garage (车库) and fetch the stepladder (梯子) for you,” said James. When James saw the well decorated Christmas tree and lots of presents under it, he felt even more unhappy. “What a lovely tree!” he thought as he went downstairs, “I haven't even got one present for Jessica. I've lost my car and I'm completely wet. I must have lost my umbrella, too.”
