The world had many beautiful sounds. We can hear the songs of birds and the laughter of people. We can listen to cool music and news reports. And it is all because of our ears! They bring us a world of sounds.
But some people can’t hear any sound at all. Some are born deaf. Others can hear well in their childhood, but too many loud sounds hurt their ears later on. Many people in China can’t hear ordinary sounds clearly. A large number of them are children. Most of them are born with good hearing. Christian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java. Many people on the island had a disease called beri-beri. He was going there to try and find a cure.
At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ(细菌)caused beri-beri. He raised some chickens. He didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate --- refined white rice(精炼米). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery --- that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins(维生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack vitamins in a person’s food.

When this Chinese territory(领地)welcomed Disneyland in 2005, the government and other investors didn’t dream it would take seven years to turn a profit(利润).
The park has finally reached that milestone, which mainly dues to the increase of mainland Chinese visitors.
When the Disney deal was signed in 1999, the park was widely seen as a great help for Hong Kong’s struggling economy(经济), at the time recovering from the Asian financial crisis(金融风暴). The government estimated that the park would provide a $19 billion boost(提高)to the local economy over 40 years. In 2009, the government cut that forecast to $15 billion.
Walt Disney Co., which co-owns the theme park with the Hong Kong government, has been stepping up distribution of its television shows across mainland China, and runs nearly 24 hours of weekly programming that could reach more than 30 million viewers. The park works with travel agencies on the mainland to educate tour guides. Buses from neighbouring Shenzhen cross the border to Hong Kong Disneyland every 30 minutes.
But competition from the Shanghai Disneyland, which is slated to open by the end of 2015, could undermine efforts to expand the compact model in Hong Kong. Analysts have attributed the Hong Kong park’s weak financial performance to its size --- the smallest of Disney’s theme parks world—wide.
The park is adding three themed lands. But efforts to expand further have been slowed by pressure from Hong Kong lawmakers, who say the government invested too much in a project that hasn’t performed to expectations.

Chess must be one of the oldest games in the world. An Arab traveler in the year 900 wrote that it was played “long long ago”. Chess was probably invented in India, and it has been played everywhere from Japan to Europe since 1400. The name “chess” is interesting. When the king has been caught and cannot move anywhere, he says “check mate(将死)”. These words come from Persian(波斯人). It means “the king is dead”. That is when the game is over, and one player has won.
Such an old game changes very slowly. The rules have not always been the same as they are now. For example, at one time the queen could only move one square at a time. Now she is the strongest piece on the board. It would be interesting to know why this has happened! Chess takes time and thought, but it is a game for all kinds of people. You don’t have to be winner in order to enjoy it. It is not always played by two people sitting at the same table. The first time the Americans beat the Russians was in a match played by radio. Some people are able to play many people at the same time. One man played 400 games! It is said that some people play chess by post. This must make chess the slowest game in the world.
