My high school life has been filled with ups and downs. And the school, Southside High School, was not even my first choice. My parents always said to me, “Since you have chosen the school, then it is the best for you.”
I did not realize my ability as a student until the third year in high school. I was told that my third year would be the hardest time in all my years of high school. With a sense of anxiety, I started my third year, worried about my grades. As the weeks went by, I began to believe that the third year was not as hard as everyone had said, but I was wrong. My grades were quickly falling, and by the end of the first term I had got five Cs in seven of my classes! I couldn’t believe it. I tried my best to get my grades up without asking anybody for help, but my pride just made my grades even worse. And I failed some important speech competitions. I was sad. I realized that I couldn’t go through my third year on my own, so I began to ask others for help.
Once I got a tutor (家庭教师), my grades went from Cs and Ds to As and Bs. I slowly started to get my confidence (信心) back. I also received awards in speech competitions.
Southside has taught me to keep my head up and never give up, no matter what life throws at me. I am proud of being a Southside Tiger.

The older generation (代) have been thinking of us as lazy persons. They often think we want everything handed to us. I don’t think so.
Let me introduce a nine-year-old girl named Hilde who spends her time running her own news reporting website, Orange Street News. Hilde created the website in 2014 when she was just seven years old with the help of her father and sister. However, this young girl received unfriendly comments (评论) from people on the Internet after she reported a piece of wrong news on the website. Several comments told the girl that she should be playing with toys.
What I found most difficult to understand is that most of these comments are from people four times this girl’s age. She is only nine years old and she praises the world with proper grammar and spelling. If you’re going to criticize (批评) her, at least make your own grammar and spelling proper like hers.
As a young writer myself, I am proud that Hilde is using her interest to make a difference to the world and put herself out there and she doesn’t let these unkind words stop her from doing what she loves. You can’t tell what I am able to do according to only my age, nor can you tell what Hilde is able to do because of hers.
( )33. Why did some Internet users criticize Hilde
A. Because she is only a girl without any interest.
B. Because she reported news in order to make money.
C. Because she reported a piece of wrong news on her website.
D. Because she didn’t get along well with her family.
( )34. What does the writer think of the unfriendly comments on Hilde
A. Wrong. B. Strange. C. Fair. D. Helpful.
( )35. What does the underlined word “hers” refer to
A. Hilde’s report. B. Hilde’s spelling. C. Hilde’s grammar. D. Hilde’s age.
( )36. What does the writer really want to say in this passage
A. The older generation shouldn’t criticize teenagers for what they do.
B. The older generation should think of young people in a right way.
C. The older generation don’t make good use of the Internet in daily life.
D. The older generation always make a lot more mistakes than teenagers.

My unforgettable thing happened on my first day in junior high school
How time flies! The three years’ junior high school life is coming to an end. I still remember the thing happened on my first day.
It was a rainy morning, I was riding my bike to school alone. I was very excited because it was my first day to junior high school. I rode fast in order not to be late for school. Suddenly, a cat appeared in front of my bike. I tried to avoid hitting the cat and fell off the bike. A young lady saw the accident and came over quickly to help me stand up. She offered to take me to hospital. I told her that I was OK and thanked her for that.
Later in the afternoon that day, I found that the young lady was just my head teacher. What an amazing thing! I though my head teacher must be kind and helpful. I also made my mind to be more careful while riding in the future.
