More and more people around the world are getting tattoos (文身). In the United States a large number of people aged 25 to 40 get tattoos. A third of all Americans between 18 and 25 have a tattoo. In Britain a fifth of all adults are tattooed. Tattooing has become an important industry as well. Today, there are more than 50,000 tattoo artists in the US alone.
Even famous people such as Angelina Jolie and David Beckham have some kind of tattoo on their bodies. According to researchers many people tattoo themselves as a sign of individuality (个性). They want to express themselves and show others who they are. Other forms of body art are also on the rise.
Today, tattoos are widely accepted in society. That hasn't always been the case. Tattoos used to be connected with criminals (罪犯), lower class people or certain groups like sailors and motorcycle gangs. While tattooing was once only for men, more and more women are now getting tattoos.
Tattooing goes way back in history. In many parts of the world, people used tattoos for different purposes. The ancient Romans tattooed their slaves. Native Americans tattooed themselves as a sign of bravery. In Nazi Germany Jews were marked with a number to tell who they were.
Not only has tattooing itself become a big industry, but removing them is also on the increase. Many people just don't realize that a tattoo lasts forever, and at some time in their lives they may want to get rid of it. Summer is around the corner, and you may already be dreaming about how you'll spend your break. Chances are, staying in school is not your top pick. But for 13 year old Simone Jones of Philadelphia — and more than 2 million other students in the U.S. — going to school in the summer is the only choice. That's because Simone goes to a year round school.
In fact, year round schools have almost the same number of vacation days as traditional calendar schools. In a year round school, summer break is usually shortened to about four weeks; the remaining vacation time gets spread out over the rest of the year. Simone, for example, gets a few weeks off in the fall, winter, and spring.
That extra time off during the school year can be a good thing. “Everyone thinks a year round school is hard,” says Simone.“But the little breaks take a lot of pressure (压力) off us.”
Reorganizing the year can prevent summer learning loss — that is, forgetting what you've learned from the prior (之前的) school year. However, there is a downside. In fact, some schools have tried year round schedules only to turn back when it was difficult to carry out. Try setting up a soccer game with another school when you're on a break every few weeks. Planning family trips can be difficult too, especially if siblings (兄弟姐妹) are on different school schedules.
What does summer vacation mean in our culture It's an American tradition, a time to create lasting memories. But is tradition a good enough reason to keep it around Summer break began 120 years ago, when it was very hot in the summer, so schools started closing. Today, we have air conditioning. And most parents work. For many kids, summer days are spent mostly indoors, playing video games and watching TV. Clearly the world has changed. Is it time for summer break to change, too
8.According to the text, Simone Jones ________.
A.suffers from summer heat
B.has become tired of going to school
C.studies at a year round school
D.keeps forgetting what she's learned at school
9.In what way are year round schools different from traditional calendar schools
A.The number of vacation days.
B.How the holidays are organized.
C.What subjects students may choose.
D.When students go to school every day.
10.The underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 could best be replaced by “________”.
A.duty B.choice
C.danger D.problem
11.In the author's opinion, summer vacation ________.
A.was started in the early 19th century
B.is a tradition for people to keep alive
C.doesn't have to be that long any more
D.is a good time for kids to enjoy themselves

The basic flag of the United States is one of the world's oldest national flags. Only the basic flags of Austria, Denmark, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzer land are older.
During the discovery and settlement of what is now the United States, the flags of various European nations were flown over the land, as symbols of possession.
Later, in the Colonial and Revolutionary War periods, flags representing famous persons, places, and events were flown in the American Colonies.
The first official flag of the United States was created by Congress on June 14, 1777. It consisted of 13 alternate red and white stripes and 13 white stars in a field of blue, representing the 13 colonies that had declared their independence in 1776. Congress adopted a new flag of 15 stars and 15 stripes in 1795, to give representation to the two new states admitted into the Union, Vermont and Kentucky.
By 1817, there were 20 states in the Union, and it became apparent that adding one stripe for each new state would destroy the shape of the flag. As a result, Congress in 1818 restored the original design of 13 stripes and provided that each state was to be represented by one star. In 1921 Preside William H. Taft made the first official provision for the arrangement of the stars. He ordered that there be six even rows of eight stars each. Previously the arrangement of the stars had been left to the flag maker's fancy.
The evolution of the stars and stripes reflects the growth of the United States. After the admission of Hawaii into the Union in 1959, the flag was official changed for the 26th time since its creation.
There are many government flags flown in the United States in addition to the national flag. Among them are the president's and vice president's flags and those of the federal departments and some federal agencies. Each state in the Union has an official flag. The United States Navy uses special flags for signaling.
12.The basic flag of the United States is ________.
A.the oldest national flag in the world
B.one of the world's oldest flags
C.the most beautiful flag in the West
D.as old as the basic flags of some European nations
13.Before the War of Independence the flags of various European nations flown over the land were symbols of ________.
A.self rule B.occupation
C.peace and friendship D.independence
14.The first official flag of the United States was adopted ________.

I hate them when people talk loudly on their mobile phones on a bus or train. I also hate people drive and text, which are not allowed by law. It often makes you angrily when they sit at traffic lights, texting away. They can hardly notice it even when the light turns up green. Beside, I dislike those who are too interesting in their mobile phones. I go to a football match with a friend recently and he was just texting away the whole time. It often makes you angrily when they sit at traffic lights, texting away. They can hardly notice it even when the light turns up green. Beside, I dislike those who are too interesting in their mobile phones. I go to a football match with a friend recently and he was just texting away the whole time. In fact, he spent more time talk to other people than he did for me!

Dear Rose,
I'm writing to ask you for some help.
A competition of singing English songs is to be held in our school this Friday and I'm going to represent our class. However, I don't know which song will be the most proper. I know you are good at singing and have taken part in several such competitions, so I'd like you to recommend one. In addition, I'm good at singing Chinese songs but I seldom sing English ones, so I'd like you to give me some advice on how to sing English songs. I would appreciate it very much.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
