Easy ways to reduce your food waste
Shop smart.
Most people tend to buy more food than they need. To avoid buying more food than you need, make frequent trips to the supermarket every few days rather than doing a big shopping trip once a week.___1___This will help you reduce impulse buying (冲动消费) and reduce food waste as well.
Store food correctly.
Improper storage leads to a massive amount of food waste. Many people are unsure how to store fruits and vegetables, which can lead to their eventually going bad. For example, potatoes, tomatoes, and onions should never be refrigerated. ___2___
Don’t be a perfectionist.
The consumer demand for perfect fruits and vegetables has led major supermarkets to buy only picture-perfect produce from farmers.___3___It’s such a big issue that major supermarkets have started offering“ugly”fruits and vegetables at a discount in an attempt to reduce waste.
___4___
Although going out to lunch with co-workers may be enjoyable, it is also costly and can contribute to food waste. A helpful way to save money while reducing food waste is to bring your lunch to work with you. If you tend to have unfinished home-cooked meals, pack them up for a satisfying and healthy workday lunch.
Understand expiration (到期) dates.
“Sell by”and“Best by”are just two of the many confusing terms companies use on food labels to let consumers know when a product will most likely go bad. The truth is, most food that has just passed its expiration date isstill safe to eat.“Sell by”is used to inform sellers when the product should be sold or removed from the shelves.“Best by”is a suggested date for consumers to use their products by. ___5___
A.Pack your lunch.
B.Get creative in the kitchen.
C.These items should be kept at room temperature.
D.This leads to tons of perfectly good food going to waste.
E.Additionally, try making a list of items that you need to buy and stick to that list.
F.Neither of these terms means that the product is unsafe to eat after the given date.
G.Not surprisingly, industrialized countries waste more food than developing nations
How to Love Yourself
Sometimes it seems easier to love others than it does to love yourself, but self-acceptance is an important part of developing healthy relationships with others.____6____. It also means living your own life as honestly as you can. Luckily, with a little practice and patience, you can learn to love yourself, too.
Know the dangers of a lack of self-love. A lack of self-love can lead you to make harmful choices. It can lead to a harmful dependence on others for validation, which makes people set aside their own needs in order to gain others’ approval.____7____
Discard your negative filter.____8____Too much focus on negative or less favorable events in your, life can make these events seem disproportionately (不成比例地) important. If you find yourself complaining that everything that happens to you is bad, try to find a little evidence to the contrary. It is very unlikely that everything is really bad.
____9____. Some people have trouble accepting anything less than perfection from themselves. If you find yourself pursuing perfectionism and feeling negatively about yourself when you are less than perfect, take three simple steps. Stop your current line of thinking, then focus on the effort that will be required to work toward a goal, and then steadily apply the required effort.
Celebrate and reward yourself. This is the fun part of self-love: rewarding yourself!____10____celebrate it with a nice dinner at your favorite fancy restaurant. Think of all of the hard work you do every day, and find a reason to reward yourself with something nice. Buy yourself the new book or video game you’ve had your eye on.
A.Avoid perfectionism
B.Reflect on the effects of self-love
C.If you have had a significant accomplishment
D.When you are thinking negatively about yourself
E.It can also prevent emotional recovery and progress
F.Loving yourself means recognizing your own self-worth
G.Focusing only on the negatives in your life is a bad habit
To be successful or fulfilled, we should plan steps and attach deadlines. Researches show that goals can get you to work harder, focus more and perform better.____11____Worse still, they can make you more likely to cheat, and less likely to thrive.
For most of us, goals are outcomes. Those who are motivated only by the desire for the fruits of action are miserable, for they’re constantly anxious about the results of what they do. In fact, focusing on the outcome may make you even less likely to meet it.____12____It may be to learn to focus on process and forget the outcome entirely.
____13____That relates to the other risk of goalsetting: its focus. Research also shows that if they don’t really know how to complete the task, give them a goal that early on messes up their performance.
As an analysis outlines, when people were given performance-oriented goal, they acted in more competitive, selfish ways. Of course, it’s human nature to have aims, but we also may want to change our whole approach. Imagine the goal as a journey, which is about enjoying the movement, the particular challenges and the landscapes.____14____
So instead of focusing on where you want to be, set a goal based on the experience you want to have along the way. If you really want to find fulfillment, you have to do something else too. Give yourself over to your work, but let go of the outcome.____15____But it can be freer and more fulfilling.
A.Goals in themselves aren’t bad.
B.But they also can kill your creativity.
C.So instead of focusing on your goal, what is the key
D.In other words, prioritize the journey not just the destination.
E.As a result, the people who focus less on their goal are more likely to meet it.
F.Research shows that tough, specific goals get better results than easy, vague ones.
G.That means living with fewer goals, and with purpose, direction and openness instead.
Talking to yourself may seem a little shameful. If you’ve ever been overheard criticizing yourself for a foolish mistake or practicing a tricky speech ahead of time, you’ll have felt the social ban against communicating with yourself in words.
___16___ Talking to ourselves, whether out loud or silently in our heads, is a valuable tool for thought. Self-talk allows us to plan what we are going to do, manage our activities, regulate our emotions and even create a narrative (叙述)of our experience.
Take a trip to any preschool and watch a small child playing with her toys. You are very likely to hear her talking to herself: offering herself directions and giving voice to her frustrations (沮丧). ___17___ We do a lot of it when we are young—perhaps one reason for our shyness about continuing with it as adults.
As children, according to a Russian psychologist, we use private speech to regulate our actions in the same way that we use public speech to control the behavior of others. ___18___
We internalize (内化) the private speech we use as children—but we never entirely put away the out-loud version. ___19___ You’re bound to see an athlete or two encouraging themselves with a tart (刻薄的) phrase or scolding (责骂) themselves after a bad shot.
___20___ The to-and-fro between different points of view means our thoughts can end up in expected places. Both kinds of self-talk—the silent and the vocal (有声的)—seem to bring a range of benefits to our thinking.
A.But there’s no need for embarrassment.
B.If you want proof, turn on the sports channel.
C.As we grow older, we make it part of our nature.
D.Psychologists refer to this as private speech.

G.Conducting a self-dialogue is good for solving problems and working through ideas.

It’s year-round. Unlike many hobbies, birding is non-seasonal. ____22____ Spring is the best season for birds to migrate and nest; in summer, you can see and hear young birds and observe local breeding birds before they’re gone again; fall migration brings its own excitement and changes in bird populations; in winter, you can enjoy feeding birds and watching the birds that over-winter in the area.
It’s economical. The degree of your involvement is up to you.
____23____ No expensive equipment is necessary to enjoy watching birds. All you need may be a good field guide and a proper binocular Anything more is optional.
____24____The more you learn about birds, their needs, and the challenges many species face, the more concerned and involved you’re likely to become in supporting wildlife habitat conservation and restoration efforts. This involvement can be on many levels, from making sure your own property poet birds and other wildlife to educating others about the needs of bird populations.
It often leads down other paths. Watching birds in many cases causes involvement in other interests. ____25____ Many people also develop an interest in wildflowers or dragonflies(蜻蜓). She is successful. Now, she is the first female disabled athlete that has climbed Mount Everest. If she lost hope then India would never ever get such a lady that makes her country proud.
You need to believe that you can do anything for the world because IMPOSSIBLE itself says I'M POSSIBLE. If it is in your mind, it is in your range. ___29___ Always be optimistic and seize the opportunity which is coming around. Sometimes it happens that failure can demotivate (使失去动力)you, make you inferior (较差的)but it doesn’t mean that you do not have the ability to move forward; it’s your choice that you want to fight it or you become a pessimist.
Do as I say, and we should fight until the last breath because you’ll never know what will happen. ___30___ Remember that fear can hold you prisoner, hope can set you free. Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.
A.But she didn’t lose hope.
B.Arunima Sinha is an exception.
C.So keep a good state of mind.

I plan to remember this year’s vacation season with just two words: NEVER AGAIN. Never again, that is, will I take all my technology along.____31____Instead of long evenings of crossword puzzles of board games, we checked our Twitter feeds and updated our Facebook pages. That is the problem with the Internet: unless you’re equipped with massive self-control, you use it if it’s there.
For several years, I kept my Internet addiction under control by using inconvenient technology: a laptop which is old and not in good condition and a slow dial- up connection.____32____The magical iPad signaled silently from the picnic table: Once that attractive touch screen lights up, who can resist
____33____I’m a late adopter. As early as 2008, Nicholas Carr, a famous writer, was warning that broadband Internet was reducing our attention spans and making us stupid. Even before that, in 2000,Harvard’s Robert Putnam warned that television—and, more broadly, staring into any kind of screen —had reduced the amount of time families spent in social interactions.
____34____I love having a bottomless library at my fingertips; I love having the world’s newspapers on my electronic doorstep. It’s also nice to have an app that identifies the constellations when you hold the iPad up to the night sky. But then, you have to remember to put the screen down and simply drink in the stars.
And that’s the point:____35____It’s our fault instead of the Internet, for failing to control the urge to browse. So now I have one more thing to look forward to next summer: More time reading old novels; more time playing crossword puzzles and chasing frogs.
A.The Internet has ruined summer vacations.
B.Access to the Web is unquestionably a wonderful thing.
C.I’m not the first to get lost across this problem, of course.
D.People should not rely simply on the Internet to provide them with other information.
E.It’s important not to let the convenience of the Internet get in the way of simpler beauties.
F.Although the Internet is often useful, it can become addictive and prevent human interaction.
G.But this year, the combination of a new iPad and very good Wi-Fi turned out to be disastrous.
If you’re anything like the average American, you probably check your smartphone more than 50 times per day as a 2018 study found. ___36___ In fact, The University of Arizona found back in 2012 that cell phones carry 10 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, largely because toilet seats are typically cleaned more frequently while personal electronics are largely overlooked.
As the novel coronavirus continues to spread, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization are advising the general public to wash hands often and disinfect(消毒) frequently touched objects and surfaces. ___37___
But cleaning your phone can be tricky, considering many of the standard cleaning products you’d typically use for disinfection could potentially damage your mobile device. You may want to wipe down your phone’s screen with some rubbing alcohol or a disinfectant wipe. ___38___ These phones have a coating on them to prevent oil or grease from your hand from sticking on the phone. Using alcohol or those types of everyday solutions directly on a phone, on its glass can harm it. ___39___
That lines up with the advice Apple and Samsung offer which warn not to use cleaning products. ___40___ If you need to disinfect your smartphone, consider looking into a UV light to kill the bacteria.
A.You should avoid using alcohol.
B.But in doing so, you risk damaging your device’s screen.
C.That means keeping your phone clean is important as well.
D.You should still be cautious wvhen exposing them to liquids.
E.Instead, use a micro fiber cloth and dampen it lightly with soap and water.

G.Both companies say wiping your phone down with a soft cloth is the best way to clean it.
As digital devices have taken over society, “keyboard activity” is now often recommended as a substitute(替代物) for early handwriting, a new study notes. ____41____.
“Some schools in Norway have become completely digital,” notes Audrey Vander Meer, the new study’s leader, who works at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. ____42____. The human brain has developed to interact with the world in as many ways as possible, she notes. She believes that young children should learn to write by hand successfully, and, at the same time learn to manage a keyboard.
____43____. Her new findings prove this. This is because writing and printing involve complex movements that activate more areas of the brain. The increased brain activity, “gives the brain more ‘hooks’ to hang your memories on,” she explains.
Think about it. The same movement is required to type each letter on a keyboard. By comparison, when we write, our brain needs to think about and recover memories of each letter. ____44____. And we need to control our hands to press a pen or pencil to shape the different letters. All of these use and connect more areas of the brain.
Along the way, these processes appear to “open the brain up for learning”, says Vander Meer. ____45____. She expresses her worries.
Vander Meer also points out that taking notes by hand stimulates “visual note-taking”. Rather than typing blindly, the visual note-taker has to think about what is important to write down. Then, key words can be “interlinked (互连的) by boxes, and arrows, and supplemented by small drawings”.
A.Young kids should learn several basic drawing skills.
B.It is believed that typing may be easier for young children.
C.Using a pen involves more of the brain than using a keyboard.
D.It has to be done by hand, not necessarily typing on a keyboard.
E.So learning through only one format—digital—could be harmful.
F.She measures brain activity to better understand learning and behaviors
G.It is also necessary for us to use our eyes to watch what shapes we are writing.
Some people seem to be born happy. Nothing seems to get them down. However, some people seem to have everything going well but they still do not seem to be happy. ___46___

◆Have a pet
You may not have a pet of your own, but pets are so good at making people happy. ___48___Some pets are lovely and some need exercise, which is helpful to you, too.
◆ Stay fit and healthy
Try to keep fit and healthy by exercising every day. ___49___ The great thing about exercise is that it helps release chemicals and these chemicals make you feel happy!

A.Be kind and smile
B.Be active and happy
C.Exercise can keep you happy.
D.There are different kinds of it.

11.根据上文“To be successful or fulfilled, we should plan steps and attach deadlines. Researches show that goals can get you to work harder, focus more and perform better.(要想成功或完成任务,我们应该计划步骤并设定最后期限。研究表明,目标可以让你更努力地工作,更专注,表现得更好)”以及后文“Worse still, they can make you more likely to cheat, and less likely to thrive.(更糟糕的是,它们会让你更有可能作弊,更不可能茁壮成长)”可知,本句与上文构成转折,指出目标存在的弊端。故B选项“但它们也会扼杀你的创造力”符合语境,故选B。
12.根据上文“For most of us, goals are outcomes. Those who are motivated only by the desire for the fruits of action are miserable, for they’re constantly anxious about the results of what they do. In fact, focusing on the outcome may make you even less likely to meet it.(对我们大多数人来说,目标就是结果。那些只被追求行动成果的欲望所驱使的人是痛苦的,因为他们不断地担心他们所做的事情的结果。事实上,只关注结果可能会让你更不可能实现目标)”以及后文“It may be to learn to focus on process and forget the outcome entirely.(它可能是学会专注于过程,完全忘记结果)”可知,后文提到学会专注过程,可知本句引起下文,指出关注过程的关键是什么。故C选项“不专注于你的目标的关键是什么?”符合语境,故选C。
13.根据后文“That relates to the other risk of goalsetting: its focus. Research also shows that if they don’t really know how to complete the task, give them a goal that early on messes up their performance.(这与设定目标的另一个风险有关:它的焦点。研究还表明,如果他们真的不知道如何完成任务,给他们一个目标,会在一开始就扰乱他们的表现)”可知,后文提到研究还表明了什么,说明本句是在介绍第一个研究的发现。故F选项“研究表明,强硬、具体的目标比简单、模糊的目标效果更好”符合语境,故选F。
14.根据上文“As an analysis outlines, when people were given performance-oriented goal, they acted in more competitive, selfish ways. 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是自言自语给我们带来的好处,并不代表着精神失常。
16.根据第一段中的“If you’ve ever been overheard criticizing yourself for a foolish mistake or practicing a tricky speech ahead of time, you’ll have felt the social ban against communicating with yourself in words.(如果你曾经被无意中听到批评自己犯了一个愚蠢的错误,或者提前练习了一个棘手的演讲,你就会感受到社会对自己与自己交流的禁令。)”可知,人们感觉自言自语受到社会的限制,描述自言自语是一件很尴尬的事情,而空后“Talking to ourselves, whether out loud or silently in our heads, is a valuable tool for thought.(自言自语,无论是大声还是默默地在脑海中,都是一个有价值的思考工具。)” 故选A项。
17.根据空前的“You are very likely to hear her talking to herself: offering herself directions and giving voice to her frustrations(沮丧).(你很可能会听到她自言自语:给自己指路,说出她的沮丧。)”可知,自言自语是很常见的事情,D选项“Psychologists refer to this as private speech.(心理学家将此称为私人演讲。)”
18.根据上文“As children, according to a Russian psychologist, we use private speech to regulate our actions in the same way that we use public speech to control the behavior of others. (根据一位俄罗斯心理学家的说法,作为儿童,我们使用私人言论来规范我们的行为,就像我们使用公共言论来控制他人的行为一样。)”和下一段中的“We internalize (内化) the private speech we use as children—but we never entirely put away the out-loud version.(我们内化了我们小时候使用的私人演讲,但我们从未完全放弃大声的版本。)”可知,我们内化了小时候使用的私人演讲,C选项“As we grow older, we make it part of our nature.(随着年龄的增长,我们把它作为我们天性的一部分。)”
19.根据空后的“You’re bound to see an athlete or two encouraging themselves with a tart (刻薄的) phrase or scolding (责骂) themselves after a bad shot.(你一定会看到一两个运动员在投篮不好后用刻薄的短语鼓励自己或责骂自己。)”可知,此处描述的是运动员在场上自言自语的场景,B选项“If you want proof, turn on the sports channel.(如果您需要证据,请打开体育频道。)”
20.根据空后的“The to-and-fro between different points of view means our thoughts can end up in expected places.(不同观点之间的来回意味着我们的思想最终可以到达预期的地方。)”可知,此处讲述的是自言自语对思维所能达到的高度的影响,G选项“Conducting a self-dialogue is good for solving problems and working through ideas.(进行自我对话有利于解决问题和理清思维。)”

21.根据“But why do people take up bird-watching (但为什么人们喜欢观鸟呢?)”
22.根据“It’s year-round. Unlike many hobbies, birding is non-seasonal.(全年无休。与许多爱好不同,观鸟是非季节性的)”以及下文“Spring is the best season for birds to migrate and nest; in summer, you can see and hear young birds and observe local breeding birds before they’re gone again; (春天是鸟类迁徙和筑巢的最佳季节;在夏天,你可以看到和听到幼鸟,并在它们再次离开之前观察当地的繁殖鸟类)”可知,空处是对下面内容的概括,表明一年四季都可以观鸟,但是观鸟也随着季节变化而变化。
The degree of your involvement is up to you.(这很省钱。你的参与程度取决于你)”以及空后“No expensive equipment is necessary to enjoy watching birds.
