Thanksgiving is an important festival in North America. We interviewed several students from the US and Canada. Here is what they have told us about their Thanksgiving experiences.
Josie from New York, USA
“In America, Thanksgiving is celebrated every year at the end of November. It is to remember the first group of people from Europe to live in America. Like all festivals, Thanksgiving is about food!”

April 7 is National Beer Day in the United States. In fact, National Beer Day is not a real holiday. But a lot of Americans celebrate it through the Internet every year. One Twitter user, RadarX, wrote, “I hear it's National Beer Day and I feel fortunate to live where they make so much of it.” Other Twitter users joined in by posting photos of glasses of cold beer.

A bookstore called the Green Valley Book Fair has succeeded for many years by giving people a chance to buy a lot of books at a low price. The Green Valley Book Fair is in Mount Crawford. And it is made up of two large storage (储藏) buildings totaling 2,300 square meters.

The Polish take great pride in their culture. Our culture has many different customs and traditions. I will discuss three of these traditions and customs.
The Polish will say “Dziekuje” (“thank you”) only after receiving their change. What I mean by this is that when you are in Poland, you should wait to say “thank you” until after you have been given your change back. If you do not, you are telling cashiers (收银员) that they can “keep the change”. Often, people visiting Poland will feel that things are very expensive, until they learn that they are giving the store clerk permission to keep the money that would have been given back.
Polish people break “bread” with their families during their Christmas Eve meal. The Christmas Eve celebration starts with the breaking of the Oplatek, which is a thin piece of “bread”. In my family, the eldest in the family (my grandfather) takes the big Oplatek and breaks it into large pieces that he then hands down to each of his four children (my aunt, uncles, and father). Then, these family members break their pieces into smaller sizes and pass them out to their own children. Once the last piece is passed down to the youngest, we say a prayer (祷告) and eat the piece of thin bread.
Polish people celebrate “Imieniny”, or Name's Day. This day is more important than one's birthday. They often name their children after a saint (圣徒) whose day is closest to the date that they were born on. Then their saint's day that they were named after becomes their “new” birthday. On Name's Day, families and friends gather together and enjoy a variety of food, drinking, and dancing.
As you can see, Poland has a few very unique (独特的) traditions and customs. I honor my Polish culture and will pass it on to my own children because it is important to know one's own culture.
12.In Poland, if you say“Dziekuje” before getting your change,________.
A.the store clerk will keep it
B.the product will be changed
C.the store clerk will check the money
D.the product will be returned to the store
13.On Christmas Eve, the author will receive “bread” from ________.
A.his grandfather B.his uncle
C.his aunt D.his father
14.A Polish person's Imieniny is ________.
A.a day to visit families and friends
B.more important than Name's Day
C.near to his or her birthday
D.a day to honor a saint
15.What does the author think of Polish traditions and customs
A.He feels proud of them.
B.He shows no interest in them.
C.He is worried about them.
D.He considers them very funny.

解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第二段中的第一句和“If you do not, you are telling cashiers (收银员) that they can ‘keep the change’.”可知,在波兰,如果你在收银员给你找钱之前说“Dziekuje”,就等于让收银员留下零钱。
13.On Christmas Eve, the author will receive “bread” from ________.
A.his grandfather B.his uncle
C.his aunt D.his father
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Then, these family members break their pieces into smaller sizes and pass them out to their own children.”可知,在圣诞节前夜作者会得到他父亲切的面包。
14.A Polish person's Imieniny is ________.
A.a day to visit families and friends
B.more important than Name's Day
C.near to his or her birthday
D.a day to honor a saint

15.What does the author think of Polish traditions and customs
A.He feels proud of them.
B.He shows no interest in them.
C.He is worried about them.
D.He considers them very funny.

__16__ Though kids may keep asking for less nutritious (有营养的) foods, parents should decide which foods are regularly provided in the house. Kids won't go hungry. They'll eat what's available in the fridge at home.
Say goodbye to the “clean plate club”.
__17__ Lots of parents grew up under the clean plate rule, but that way doesn't help kids listen to their own bodies when they are full. When kids feel full, they're less likely to overeat.
__18__
Food preferences are developed early in life, so try to offer different kinds of food. Likes and dislikes begin forming even when kids are babies. Parents may need to serve a new food on several different occasions (时机) for a child to accept it.
Food is not love.
Find better ways to say “I love you”. When foods are used to reward kids and show love, they may start to turn to food when feeling worried or unhappy. __19__
Kids do as you do.
__20__ When trying to teach good eating habits, try to set the best example. Choose nutritious food, eat at the table, and don't forget breakfasts.
A.Start them young.
B.Rewrite the kids' menu.
C.Be a role model and eat healthy yourself.
D.Offer praise and attention instead of food treats.
E.Let kids stop eating when they feel they've had enough.
F.You decide which foods to buy and when to serve them.
G.Let kids choose what to eat and how much of it they want.

17.选E 由该段标题Say goodbye to the “clean plate club”和文中的“that way doesn't help ... when they are full”可知,如果孩子感觉吃饱了就不要再强迫他们非得把盘子里的食物吃光,这样对身体不好,故选E项。
18.选A 本段主要是说要帮助孩子从小养成不挑食的好习惯,故用A项作为小标题最恰当。
19.选D 由该段标题Food is not love和文中的“When foods are used ... feeling worried or unhappy.”可知,作者建议不要用食物作为奖励,而是应该给予表扬和关注,故选D项。
20.选C 由该段标题Kids do as you do和文中的“When trying to teach good eating habits, try to set the best example.”可知,要想培养孩子良好的饮食习惯,父母首先得以身作则,故选C项。

The Mid Autumn Festival falls on the 15th of the eighth month of our Chinese lunar calendar.
参考范文:
The Mid Autumn Festival falls on the 15th of the eighth month of our Chinese lunar calendar. As one of the traditional Chinese festivals, it has been enjoying great popularity in our country. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy we are, we will try to return home for the celebration. The moon that night looks the brightest in the whole lunar month. What we love most is the time when we enjoy the full moon together. With the beautiful moon up in the sky, we sit together and eat mooncakes and fruit, sharing our stories. In addition to these traditional activities, we have a wider range of choices such as travelling and visiting our relatives or friends.
