How do you usually spend time with your family
Many families want to apply for this TV reality show. People in the 21st century get bored with the simple modern life without a lot of labour-challenging daily routine. They want to challenge themselves with the hardship during the wartime, and experience a different life, which may provoke their reflection upon their present life or bring some changes to their family life.
2. What is the writing purpose of the reading passage
The writer wants to tell us that we may have different lifestyles in different times. Life today is totally different from that in the 1940s, but modern technology is no guarantee of a happy family life. Just like what is written the reading passage “life in the 1940s wasn't easy, but an easier and more comfortable life doesn't necessarily mean a better life.” Harmonious family relationship is the most important thing whatever times we live in.

Housing
In modern times
She lives in a modern, open-plan house. The house probably has rooms with different functions, such as a living room, a kitchen, a dining room, a bathroom and bedrooms. There may also be a central heating system in the modern house and many labour-saving devices, such as a washing machine and a microwave.
Do you like coal fire or central heating Why
In the 1940s
Personal safety was a great problem in the 1940s because of wartime dangers. Lyn’s family had to dig a hole in their garden and stay there to protect themselves.

Personal safety
In modern times
Her life is probably peaceful. Since the war ended a long time ago, I think she won’t need to worry about safety.
In the 1940s
There wasn’t much meat or milk, or many eggs, and the food was really boring because of the rationing of goods.
People were often hungry at that time.

Food
In modern times
Children often have snacks, and people are provided with plenty of food.
We can have a variety of food for meals every day, and can also enjoy different cuisines from different countries at restaurants.
In the 1940s
Chores were like a full-time job. Women spent most of their time preparing meals, doing the dishes, cleaning the floor and boiling clothes. It was terribly difficult for them to do these chores.

Select one person to report on behalf of your group.
My choice
I would take a mobile phone that can connect to the Internet with me. As a convenient modern communication tool, the mobile phone makes it possible to stay in touch with friends and keeps me informed of what is happening around the world. I can also watch films, play games and listen to music on my mobile phone.
Assignment
Search on the Internet and compare the life today with the life in the 1940s in the UK in terms of transport, clothes and recreational activities, and share what you find with your classmates.
