If you want to know real Beijing, walk along the streets of Beijing and visit a siheyuan. As traditional buildings, siheyuan is mostly seen in northern China.
A typical siheyuan has a big square courtyard (院子) with four buildings on all four sides. Usually, one big family lives here. The design of a siheyuan follows Confucian (儒家的) ideas of respecting authority (权威) and the old. The northern main house gets the most sunshine, so the eldest member of the family lives there.
