(2022·上海·模拟)This Is A Land of the Free
On a recent morning at the Brooklyn Free School, ten students were sitting around a table. They were having a debate.
"Those elements (元素) don't really go together," said one boy. "They are so different. But that would make them a great source of power,"said another. "Because they are so , it would be awesome to bring them together."
This was Chemistry: The Gathering. It was a class where students could discover different chemical elements. The class was designed by the students themselves. The teacher sat and listened. Sometimes, he asked questions, but generally, the students guided the discussion.
At the Brooklyn Free School, everything works like this. The students make the rules. They pick their classes. And they don't have to come if they don't want to. At this school, students don't get grades, don't have homework, don't take tests, don't even have to go to class they want to.
Critics (批评者) say such an environment won't prepare students for the real world. The school's founder, Alan Berger, however, doesn't agree. Berger used to teach in a public school. He found the lack (缺少) of there made some students hate school. Berger thinks it is important to allow students to "find their own way".
One student, Oscar, loves talking about the school. "If you don't draw up any rules, each student will discover his or her own path to ," he said. " Kids who don't want to do anything finally say, 'I' m going to start doing something."
"We're trying to kids to stay themselves", Berger said. "That's what they need to bring to the world, to live a successful, individually happy life. There's much more power in that, and it really brings diversity to the world." Berger said it was fun to run a school like this. "We are getting to know kids for who they really are, "he added." We are working out how to make the world for everybody, instead of fitting everybody into the world."

(2022·上海·模拟) The Vieira family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking Spanish at home and only communicate in English. This was because they were now living in an English-speaking country.
Now the Vieira children are adults, and they sometimes travel to Spain to their family and friends. But they cannot communicate with them. Unfortunately this is common. When people move to new countries, they often leave their own customs and mother language behind. This is a because there are many benefits to knowing more than one language.
One advantage of speaking more than one language is that you can communicate directly with more people around the world. You do not have to depend on others to talk for you, so you're more . People who know only one language must use others to help them communicate.
, speaking a second language also allows people to experience other cultures and customs more effectively. Local expressions, vocabulary and even jokes can have a powerful effect on a person's understanding of another culture. So, knowing more than one language your knowledge of other cultures.
