一、完形填空
(2020·上海徐汇区·期末) The way people hold to the belief that a fun-filled, painfree life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever securing real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.
As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment, self-improvement.
Ask a bachelor he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is making a commitment (承诺). For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, they are not its most distinguishing features.
Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night's sleep or a three-day vacation. I don't know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

(2021·上海市·单元测试) "Lifelong learning" is a popular idea all around the world, but what does it mean
Many people believe we can learn everything we need to be successful in life at school. it is not true. In modern society, everything is changing very fast. Lifelong learning means learning new skills and knowledge through our whole lives, not just when we are young.
Lifelong learning can also mean learning something to make our lives happier or easier. Older people might attend a course because they cannot send an e-mail to their children, or someone might learn a new so they can talk to their foreign neighbor. In one American city neighborhood, all the women went to a self-defense (自我防护) class so they could back if a thief attacked them! All these are different examples of lifelong learning.
Lifelong learning has helped people like Peter J. Daniels, an Australian businessman. Peter grew up poor and when he was a child he experienced learning difficulties. A teacher once told him, "Peter, you will never become anything in life." After leaving school, Peter became a builder, but he still wanted to and learn how to read. He bought a dictionary and slowly taught himself how to pronounce words and form sentences. Later, Peter started to read books from cover to cover. He read 6,000 books on politics, religion, business and history in two years. All this knowledge helped Peter start a business career. He has written several books and received many honours and awards.

(2019·上海·期末)Making Sense of How the US Shows Humor
Living in a new country gives me many surprises. The first surprise was the way that the US people speak.
One day I saw someone having a public speech in a square. I thought it would be a speech. But I soon found it became a kind of entertainment show.
The speaker told the audience to protect the environment in a humorous way. Later he said some people's behaviors didn't go with their . He took the example of Taylor Swift's song We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.
He said that since Swift didn't want to be with the boy anymore, she didn't need to speak it aloud; she didn't need to sing unless she still kept in touch with that guy. It sounded like she was a hypocrite (伪善者).
Then he sang the song in a funny way. The audience laughed out loudly. I felt a little because Swift was my favorite star. I couldn't understand why they laughed at Swift.
As time goes on, I find many US people others. But they don't mean to hurt them. They do that to show closeness and humor. And people who are laughed at seldom get angry. Now I understand the speaker at the square. Now I've the way US people show humor.
It's to find culture shock when you're in a new place. But everyone should learn to understand different cultures and customs.

(2021·期中)Hi Janet,
I've finally arrived here in Paris. It has been a very long journey—I never knew that travelling could be so tiring!
I got a taxi to take me to the airport yesterday morning. I had to two hours before the time on my ticket. I gave the airline my luggage, and got my boarding pass. Then I had to go through security. There, a woman checked inside my other bags. After that, I still had an hour left, so I looked around some shops in the airport. I bought myself a magazine and some for the trip.
I had never been on a plane before, so once I sat down I listened carefully to all the safety instructions. Then the plane took off. I was to a window, so I was able to watch the ground slowly disappear.
The journey took ten hours, all the way from New York to Paris. I was given dinner and breakfast, and watched interesting movies on the plane. When we arrived, I had to remember the time difference—the time in Paris is six hours ahead of New York, and I had to change my watch from midnight to six in the morning. I missed a whole night!
After we and got off the plane, we went to find our bags. I was happy because I found my luggage quite quickly. The woman me on the plane was not so lucky—her luggage was sent to a different place!
I took the bus into Paris, as the airport is almost an hour away from the city center, I then had to carry my heavy luggage down onto the underground, and travel three stops to get to my hotel.
Now I am going to sleep, because I am tired. It was a long journey, but I think I am really going to have a great holiday in Paris.
Yours
Amy

(2021·上海闵行区·期中) Have you chosen different passwords for your many accounts – email accounts, bank accounts, etc. Are you having a hard time remembering them all Researchers always us to use different passwords for different accounts. And for security reasons, we should also memorize all the passwords, writing down somewhere. However, for lots of people, it's a big headache to have to remember so many passwords.
Now, an IT company has offered a(n) to this problem. It designed a tiny device with an electronic circuit (电子电路) in it. The circuit can recognize you. After putting this microchip (微芯片) under the skin of you hand, you can log in to your accounts without using any password. In other words, you no longer suffer the headache of trying to recall your passwords.
The company has carried out a test in Stockholm, Sweden. Office workers in the city were offered the chance to have the microchip put under their skin if they wished. With this microchip, access cards (门禁卡) became a thing of past. People could get in and out of their offices . Besides, they could log in to their computers in seconds without a password. They could even use the new technology to pay for food in the company canteen.
Some people welcomed the new technology. Some, however, thought it was not to have a microchip put under their skins. They wondered if the microchip would harm their health.
But this technology is really . The coming years might see further improvements in it. Perhaps many years later, we will all become part human and part machine. By that time, we won't have to worry about the possibility of forgetting our passwords!
