Books That Shaped America
Huckleberry Finn
Novelist Ernest Hemingway famously said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called ‘Huckleberry Finn.’ ... All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.” During their trip down the Mississippi on a raft, Twain describes in a satirical (嘲讽的) and humorous way Huck and Jim's encounters with hypocrisy, racism, violence and other evils of American society. His use in serious literature of a lively, simple American language full of dialect and informal spoken expressions paved the way for many later writers, including Hemingway and William Faulkner.
Gone with the Wind
The most popular romance novel of all time was the basis for the most popular movie of all time (in today's dollars). Margaret Mitchell's book, Gone with the Wind, set in the South during the Civil War, won both the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, and it remains popular, despite charges that its author had a blind eye regarding the horrors of slavery.
Leaves of Grass
The publication of the first slim edition of Walt Whitman's “Leaves of Grass” in 1855 was the first appearance of a masterpiece that shifted the course of American literary history. Refreshing and bold in both theme and style, the book experienced many revisions during Whitman's lifetime. Over almost 40 years Whitman produced multiple editions of “Leaves of Grass”, shaping the book into an ever transforming kaleidoscope (千变万化) of poems. By his death in 1892, “Leaves” was a thick summary that represented Whitman's view of America over nearly the entire last half of the 19th century. Among the collection's best known poems are “I Sing the Body Electric”, “Song of Myself”, and “O Captain! My Captain!” in praise of Abraham Lincoln.
The American Woman's Home
This classic domestic guide, The American Woman's Home, by sisters Catharine E. Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe is dedicated to “the women of America, in whose hands rest the real fates of the Republic.” It includes chapters on healthful cookery, home decoration, exercise, cleanliness, good air ventilation (通风方法) and heat, etiquette, sewing, gardening and care of children, the sick, the aged and domestic animals. Intended to elevate the “woman's sphere” of household management to a respectable profession based on scientific principles, it became the standard domestic handbook.

We can express feelings and send sounds and pictures on our smartphones today. We also communicate using programs like Skype and Face Time. We can't send tastes, scents or touch, of course. But scientists in Britain are trying to develop a way for the smartphone to do just that. Adrian David Cheok, a professor at City University in London, wants people to experience communication using all of their senses.
To give users a sense of taste, researchers designed two silver electrodes (电极片) that are placed in the mouth with the tongue in between. A chemical process creates different tastes on the surface of the tongue. This chemical process sends signals that tell the brain that a person is tasting something. They have already created sour, salty, sweet and bitter tastes.
A device called “Scentee” permits users to have the sense of smell. Scentee is fixed in the smartphone and can release tiny clouds of scent (气味). Actually, an app (应用程序) in Scentee is connected with the Internet, which can tell what scent should be released. Scentee then releases a scent from the smartphone. Scentee holds about 100 different scents. It must be replaced when all the scents run out.
The sense of touch comes from a ring like device. It is connected wirelessly to the smartphone. The device sends a soft squeeze (挤压) when a person with the ring like device on the other end of a smartphone does the squeeze. “I can be in London and my friend can be in New York, and I can squeeze my finger and then he'll get a squeeze on his finger through the Internet. It's a way of touch communication with the smartphone.” Cheok says.
Cheok hopes that these devices will someday be seen in our daily life, not only in a science fiction film (科幻片).
12.We can learn that the scientists in Britain are trying to ________.

One of the toughest things to do when getting to know people professionally is remembering their names. And it's also an extremely useful skill to have in your daily life. __16__ Here are some tricks to remembering any name:
Ask for their business card.
When you meet someone in a working situation, ask for their business card. Write down a few notes about the person and his appearance so you can tell him from the other people you've met. __17__
__18__
At the end of your conversation, ask the person you're speaking with to repeat his name just to make sure you have it right. Hearing it once more will help you memorize it as well.
Visualize (视觉化) an image.
__19__ For example, if you meet a Catherine, then try to connect the image of a cat with her. That way, when you meet the woman again, the image of a cat will arise, and it will be easy to work out what her name is.
Inject it into conversation.
Say the person's name as often as you can during the conversation without getting him/her awkward. For example, inserting the name casually in sentences like “I really agree with you, John” or “__20__” will do wonders for memorizing names.
A.You can always turn to the card for help if you forget his or her name.
B.Attach an image to the name.
C.Repeat it in your mind.
D.Showing a stranger you remembered his/her name can leave a good impression.
