In a nation where children have little or no access to good books, a school teacher is trying his best to make a difference. Saber Hosseini teaches children in the city of Bamiyan, Afghanistan and he has changed his bicycle into a mobile library.
“I came up with the idea for this project six months ago. I talked about it to friends in literary circles who donated money. I started alone with 200 storybooks for kids, and started riding to remote (偏僻的) villages throughout Bamiyan. Soon, many volunteers joined me and we have collected about 6,000 books.”
Saber chose to use bicycles for his mobile library project mainly because volunteers can't afford cars and most of the villages in his province can only be reached by bike.
Saber loads his cycle with books every weekend and rides to remote villages, most of which don't even have schools. “Many of those children are old enough for the third or fourth grade,” he said. “But in fact, they have not learned to read or write.” He keeps track of all the books he has left behind so that he can bring new ones for the kids the next time around.
Saber also talks to children about peace, love, and why they should stay away from drugs. “One time, I talked to children in a village about guns, using the slogan (口号) ‘say no to guns and yes to books,’” he recalled. “For the next time, the kids handed all of their toy guns over to me — but they had one condition: they wanted their village to be the first in the next round of book deliveries (递送) so they could get first pick.”

When we smile, our system recognizes that there's an absence of threat, and relaxes: It slows down our heart rate, and may temporarily reduce blood pressure, too, promoting overall heart health. Even forcing your face into a smile can reduce stress and relax your heart rate.
Smiling is a language that everyone understands regardless of age, race, culture, language, and nationality. We all know that when you smile at people, even strangers, they almost always smile back, spreading a kind of peace and goodwill. This contagious (有感染力的) smiling comes from a subconscious (潜意识的) tendency to match other people's emotions. It's why people who spend time around children, who smile often, naturally smile more than people who keep mostly adults company.
People who are generous with smiles are considered more likeable and approachable than people who wear a deadpan (面无表情的) expression. Consider successful salesmen and politicians. Can you imagine how we'd react if they wore sour (讨厌的) expressions People who smile a lot are more likely to gain our trust — and earn better tips — than someone who provides the same service with an impassive face.
In a study, Major League Baseball players from 1952 who wore full faced, genuine smiles on their baseball cards lived longer, around 79.9 years, compared to players who only partly smiled or didn't smile at all, who lived 5 to 7 years less. Smiling can make us look younger, too: People who smile frequently seem to age more slowly, appearing around three years younger than their less smiley counterparts.
We now have evidence that we are hardwired to smile. While smiling used to be considered a learned behavior that babies acquired at around six weeks of age, more advanced ultrasound (超音波) testing has shown that even babies who are born blind can smile. Babies have been known to make breathing and sucking (吮吸) movements while still in the womb (子宫), and these reactions are thought to prepare them for their life outside. Now smiling has joined the list. Say cheese!
8.What can smiling do according to Paragraph 1
A.Remove your life pressure.
B.Improve the condition of the heart.
C.Make your blood pressure steady.
D.Prevent you from being absent minded.
9.What should you do if you want to smile more according to the author
A.Stay more with people smiling more.
B.Approach smart children.
C.Care more about others' feelings.
D.Volunteer together with more strangers.
10.What does the author want to show by mentioning salesmen and politicians
A.A false smile may hurt people.
B.Smiles contribute to a career.
C.Generous people tend to smile more.
D.Work pressure stops people smiling.
11.What does the author suggest in the last paragraph
A.Babies smile within 2 months.
B.Blind babies learn to smile.
C.Smiling is a natural ability.
D.Breathing and sucking are similar to smiling.

Many teachers use student participation as a basis on which to assign grades. Some criticize the practice as harmful to classroom dynamics, like two California high schoolers who wrote an opinion piece about it in their school newspaper. “A student who is unwilling or unable to speak in class does not always show a lack of care, since all students function in different ways,” they write, nothing that some students require more time, or written assignments, to grasp new material presented in class.
They also point out the detrimental effect participation requirements can have on the quality of a lesson; for example, students might speak up only in an effort to get participation points, resulting in questions that lack insight and wasted opportunities for those who genuinely want to learn.
Finally, the high schoolers criticize the nature of participation grades. “Simply recording the number of times a person participates fails to capture the nature of what exactly was said,” they write, adding that participation grades leave too much room for teachers' favoritism to show through.
Of course, there's a different side to every story. In a recent article in The Atlantic, a middle school teacher defends her decision to keep class participation as a requirement for her students. “As a teacher, it is my job to teach grammar, vocabulary and literature, but I must also teach my students how to succeed in the world we live in — a world where most people won't stop talking,” she says. “If anything, I feel even more strongly that my introverted (内向的) students must learn how to self advocate by communicating with parents, educators, and the world at large.”
She mentions several resources in the article. One such resource is Dr. Kendall Hoyt, an assistant professor of medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. Dr. Hoyt is a self described introvert and mother of two introverts. “I understand that social anxiety is a real thing, and part of my job as a teacher is to teach people how to express themselves clearly and be heard,” Dr. Hoyt says. She also teaches this to her own children, creating chances for them that require them to approach strangers, make eye contact and ask for something, like directions or information.
12.The article written by the two high schoolers is about whether students is should ________.
A.speak freely in class
B.be graded on participation
C.spend more time speaking
D.be given written assignments
13.Which can best replace the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 2

C.Practical. D.Beneficial.
14.The middle school teacher mentioned in Paragraph 4 stresses the importance of ________.
A.English literature
B.vocabulary and grammar
C.grading students objectively
D.teaching students to express themselves
15.Why does the middle school teacher mention Dr. Hoyt in her article

D.To attract readers' attention.

There are disadvantages and advantages to all parenting styles. There is no such thing as perfect parenting. The two main styles of parenting are tolerant (宽容的) and strict. __16__ Some of those advantages are evident (明显的) during childhood or adulthood.
One of the advantages of strict parents is that they push their children to high standards. This is especially true with regard to academics. __17__ As a result, the children tend to perform extremely well in their studies due to those expectations. Strict parents may even limit fun activities if their children do not succeed in doing things.
__18__ This happens because they help their children learn important values such as discipline. The children learn that they must make certain choices or bear the consequences. This confidence can also lead to independent children and adults.
Children with strict parenting can learn selflessness. If a child's needs are always met in a family with tolerant parents, the child may be spoiled (被宠坏的) and selfish. Strict parents get their children to focus their attention more on the benefits of the family members and learn to share with others. __19__
__20__ This is ideal for all children, but especially for those who have behavioral problems. Strict parents tend to have hard line policies regarding homework, school attendance and activities. That self discipline lasts for a lifetime.
A.Strict parents demand the best grades from their children.
B.Both styles of parenting have their advantages and disadvantages.
C.While there are disadvantages, there are also advantages of strict parenting.
D.Another advantage of strict parents is that they help their children build confidence.
