Making it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee (a spelling competition) is an amazing achievement for any kid, but for 11 year old Neil Maes, being born deaf made his journey especially unlikely.
After receiving cochlear implants (人工耳蜗) in both ears as a baby, he had to train his brain to understand spoken words. It took countless hours of speech therapy (疗法).
“We didn't even know that he'd be able to talk,” said his mother, Christy Maes.
Now the soft spoken kid from Belton, South Carolina is officially one of the nation's top young spellers. He earned the right to take the stage in the final rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Neil's parents have always given him a tip, coaching him to always ask the pronouncer for the meaning of a word, so that he can be sure he heard it correctly. Most contestants do this anyway.
“He's able to spell very difficult words. You tell him, ‘Spell this word,’ and he's able to actually imagine what that sounds like in his head and spell the word. It's actually quite impressive,” said Dr. Michael Hoa, who performed Neil's cochlear implantation. “There's a lot that goes into training your brain to do that.”
Neil's parents didn't know he was taking part in a spelling bee with his third grade class until he came home and told them he had won. He made it all the way to his regional (地区的) bee that year, finishing second. Now a naturally shy fifth grader, Neil is already worn out from the busy bee week schedule, but he seems happy.
“Our main hope out of all of this was to encourage people that are going to be facing what we had to face,” Christy said.
But Neil said coming to the bee has motivated (激发) him to study even harder, so he can return next year.
“It's just fun and I want to do it again,” Neil said.
4.What makes it difficult for Neil to enter the competition
A.He is naturally shy.
B.He is unable to talk.
C.He has a hearing disability.
D.He is undergoing medical treatment.
5.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to

D.The word.
6.What did Michael think of Neil
A.He's amazing.
B.He's very lucky.
C.He should study harder.
D.He should use his imagination.
7.What's the best title for the text
A.Hard training will finally pay off
B.We can do more for disabled children
C.Spelling bees are becoming more popular

What are your retirement plans Keep working Get more exercise Or learn something new You may put_them_on_hold. There's a chance that, sooner or later, you might have to move further than you were thinking, as far as Mars.
On Thursday, National Geographic will show the first ever Mars show home, giving earthlings (地球人) an idea of what their life could look like on the Red Planet. In the not so distant year of 2037, the igloo shaped structure could be the home of your future.
It shows a house built using recycled spacecraft (航天器) parts and Martian soil, called regolith, which has been microwaved into bricks. Some parts of the home are recognizable — a kitchen, a bedroom — but there are fundamental differences that are important to human survival.
As the Martian atmosphere is around one hundredth as thick as the Earth's, people will need permanent (永久的) shelter from the sun; society will move largely indoors. Most buildings will be connected by underground passages and the houses won't have windows. The homes will have simulated solar lighting, or natural light that has been bent several times.
Walls will need to be 10 to 12 feet thick, to protect people from dangerous rays (光线) that can pass through six feet of steel, and a double air locked entrance to keep the home under proper pressure.
“We don't think of our houses as things that keep us alive, but on Mars your house will be a survival centre,” says Stephen Petranek, author of How We'll Live on Mars. This is not just the stuff of sci fi. “10 to 20 years from now there will certainly be people on Mars,” Petranek says.
“We've had the technology for 30 years to land people on Mars, but we haven't had the will,” Petranek says. But two main factors have “completely swung public attitudes”.
The private companies' participation has forced government agencies to speed up their game, and influential films such as Gravity and The Martian have caught society's eye.
8.What can we know about the show home from the text
A.It has no windows or doors due to security concern.
B.Its design presents the idea of environmental protection.
C.It has thick walls keeping the home under proper pressure.
D.Its underground passages connect all the buildings together.
9.What do the underlined words “put them on hold” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Put them off. B.Give them away.
C.Carry them through. D.Take them seriously.
10.According to Petranek, what has sped up the process of sending people to Mars
A.The great influence of the Mars show home.
B.The development of related technology.
C.The competition from private companies.
D.The popularity of influential books on Mars.
11.What is the best title for the text
A.Living on Mars: Possible or Not
B.Sending People to Mars: Yes or No
C.First ever Show Home: How Is It Made
D.Future Home on Mars: What Will It Be Like

Are you at least 17 years old Do you weigh more than 110 pounds Do you consider yourself fairly healthy
If you answered yes to all of these questions, you should be donating (捐赠) blood every two months. In my survey of my schoolmates, I found that only 50 percent of them have ever donated blood and that only 1 out of 13 of them donate regularly. The lack (缺少) of blood donors is a serious problem that requires immediate action.
According to the American Red Cross Web pages, in the United States alone someone receives a blood transfusion (输血) once every three seconds. People who benefit from donations include cancer patients as well as babies. The need for blood never takes a vacation and neither should donors.
Let me tell you about Brooke, a three year old girl with cancer. Brooke has spent about half of her life in the hospital receiving treatments. Her treatment will require about 500 units of blood in total, of which only 250 units have been replaced. She still needs the other half of the total amount to continue her treatment. If she doesn't receive this blood, she will not live to start kindergarten.
Examples like Brooke's are becoming all too common these days, with only 1 in 20 Americans donating blood and this number keeps dropping each year. These facts are extremely worrying considering that nearly half of us here will need blood sometime in our lives.
You can now see the seriousness of the problem with the lack of blood donations. Fortunately, it is a problem that can be easily solved. Each and every one of you can be part of the solution. All you have to do is go to the nearest Red Cross and donate your blood.
12.How does the author explain the problem mentioned in Paragraph 2
A.By answering questions.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By presenting research findings.
D.By describing his own experiences.
13.What can we learn from the American Red Cross Web pages
A.The suffering of patients.
B.The strong need for blood.
C.The efforts of the Red Cross.
D.The benefits of taking vacations.
14.The three year old girl Brooke ________.
A.doesn't get fair treatment in the hospital
B.will need another 250 units of blood
C.stays alive by receiving blood daily
D.can't wait to start kindergarten
15.What is the purpose of the text
A.To persuade people to donate blood.
B.To present some new medical results.
C.To call on people to save a little girl.
D.To explain the risks of blood donation.
