A
This journey began this morning almost an hour later than I had planned, although I had completed my packing before eight o'clock. I was quite clear about the fact that once I left, my house would stand empty for probably the first time since the day it was built. It was a strange feeling and perhaps explains why I was leaving so late, walking around the house many times over, checking one last time to see that all was in order.
It is hard to explain my feelings once I did finally set off. As I drove further and further from the house, I found the surroundings (周围的事物) grow unrecognizable. I began to have a feeling of unease mixed with excitement. I took a turning and found myself on a road circling the edge of a hill. I could sense the steep (陡峭的)drop to my left. I felt a sense of alarm that I was perhaps not on the correct road at all, but speeding off in the wrong direction into a wilderness. It was only the feeling of a moment, but it caused me to slow down. And even when I was sure I was on the right road, I felt forced to stop the car a moment to think carefully.
I decided to step out and stretch (伸展) my legs a little. On the one side of the road, thickets and small trees rose sharply, while on the other I could now see the distant countryside and a town nearby.
I walked a little way along the roadside, when I heard a voice behind me. Until this point I had believed myself quite alone and I turned in some surprise. Sitting on the large stone was a thin, white haired man. He called to me again and signaled me to join him. For a moment, I took him for a homeless man, but then I saw he was just some local man enjoying the fresh air and summer sunshine, and saw no reason not to do so.
1.Why did the author set off later than planned
A.He repeatedly checked the house.
B.He was feeling sad about leaving the house.
C.Packing his belongings took longer than expected.
D.There was no one to help him get everything ready.
2.What caused the author to start driving more slowly
A.The road had become steep.
B.He realized he was driving too fast.
C.The beautiful scenery attracted him.
D.He suddenly feared that he might get lost.
3.When the author walked out of his car, he ________.
A.didn't expect to see anyone
B.didn't want to speak to anybody
C.didn't know there was a town nearby
D.couldn't see anything because of the trees
4.What was the author's attitude to his trip
A.He just wanted to finish it.
B.He felt unable to continue it.
C.He regretted having started it.
D.He had mixed feelings about it.

Road traffic crashes kill 1.25 million people each year worldwide. The statistics (统计数字) are part of the “Global Status Report on Road Safety 2016”. The report surveyed 180 countries, and it shows the number of annual deaths from traffic crashes is stabilizing (稳定). And that is good news as the number of motor vehicles grows worldwide. But the data also show that road crashes are the No.1 cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29. Young adults around the world are the worst driving risks. Even in the US, drivers aged 15 to 24 account for about 30 percent of all driving related accidents. But the World Health Organization (WHO) says they are preventable.
The WHO report also finds a big gap in road safety and deaths between poor and rich countries. Poor countries have only 54 percent of the world's vehicles. But those countries have some of the worst safety statistics in the report. “Africa has only two percent of the world's vehicles, but has the highest death rate on the road,” says Etienne Krug, the head of the WHO Department of Non communicable Diseases. Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom are leaders in preventing traffic deaths.
Stronger road safety laws and stricter vehicle safety requirements in developing countries would prevent many accidents. Laws can quickly influence driving behavior. In only three years, 17 countries became safer by putting tougher road safety laws into effect. Some of those laws include banning drunk driving, requiring cyclists and motorcycle drivers to wear helmets (头盔) and making safety belts mandatory (强制性的) in all vehicles. Good injury care after a crash can cut the number of deaths from road injuries in half. Of course, there are also many other ways to make roads safer.
5.The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 1 probably refers to______.
A.motor vehicles B.the statistics
C.traffic crashes D.young drivers
6.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2
A.People in developed countries are very skilled at driving.
B.Africa has to take some measures to prevent traffic deaths.
C.The Netherlands has done the best in avoiding traffic accidents.
D.Poor countries need to buy fewer cars to reduce traffic accidents.
7.What is most likely to be talked about in the paragraph following the text
A.More ways to make roads safer.
B.Suggestions on good injury care.
C.The number of deaths from accidents.
D.Other road safety laws in poor countries.
8.The text is mainly about ________.
A.the danger of driving alone
B.the No.1 killer among the youth
C.the ways to avoid road accidents
D.the importance of helmets in driving cars

7.In in the meantime/meanwhile是固定短语,意为“在此期间,与此同时”。
