I picked up my two best friends and we were off on a road trip. I had just returned to America from a year abroad in China. So, naturally I wanted to take a trip to Canada.
Montreal, the second largest city in Canada, is a four hour drive from my home in New Hampshire. We felt a thrill as we crossed the border into Canada. It was the first time I had ever driven across an international border. We turned on the radio to try and find some Canadian stations.
After dropping off our bags at our hotel, we were immediately walking down the famous St Catherine's Street. While we walked, two things surprised us: how cold it was and how well everyone dressed. The streets of Montreal are like a fashion show. Both_men_and_women_look_like_they_stepped_out_of_the_pages_of_a_magazine.
All of that fashion has to keep them warm since Montreal is so cold. Last year it broke the record for the most snowfall in North America. To hide from the cold we went into a small diner because we wanted to order Poutine, a very popular snack in Montreal. It is French fries covered in cheese and brown gravy (肉汁). It is delicious.
However, we had a hard time ordering the dish since the official language of Montreal is French. It is actually the fifth largest French speaking city in the world. But since the rest of Canada speak English, plenty of people were there to help.
We spent the rest of the weekend going to many historical churches and monuments in Montreal. But at night we'd head to the very modern dance clubs and bars. Montreal is a city that sits between the past and the future and the traveller can choose whichever direction he wants to go.

Children grow quickly, especially their feet. But many families cannot buy new shoes each time a child needs them. As a result, about 300 million children around the world go barefoot.
An American man may have a solution for those barefoot kids. Kenton Lee is the creator of these special shoes called The Shoe That Grows. He explains how the shoe works. “It grows in three places: the front; it can also grow on the side with Velcro; and on the back with our buckle (带扣). It can last up to five years. The bottom is compressed rubber (压缩橡胶) like tire rubber. The top is just high quality leather (皮革).”
The shoe comes in two sizes: small that fits children aged 4 to 9 and large for children aged 9 to 14. Lee says he got the idea for the shoe while working as a volunteer in an orphanage (孤儿院) in Kenya. “There was a little girl walking next to me. And I just remember looking down and seeing how small her shoes were. They were so small that she had to cut open the front of her shoes to let her toes stick out. And I thought: Wouldn't it be nice if there were a pair of shoes that could grow with her feet?”
However, Lee says it was not easy to turn his idea into reality. Finally, in 2009 Lee founded a non profit organization called Because International. In the office of Because International, Lee keeps a pair of his own shoes to help him remember what he has promised. Because International works with several partner organizations. Together, they have sent more than 50,000 pairs of shoes to 70 countries.
8.How does Lee make his shoes grow larger
A.By using tire rubber.
B.By producing special designs.
C.By using high quality leather.
D.By following the growth of feet.
9.What made Lee think of inventing the shoes
A.A little girl's unsuitable shoes.
B.Children's growing feet.
C.A poor girl's polite request.
D.Barefoot kids in an orphanage.
10.Why does Lee keep a pair of his shoes in his office
A.To show their true value.
B.To remind him of his promise.
C.To design new shoes with them.
D.To attract more partner organizations.
11.What is the best title of the text
A.Shoes that grow with a child
B.Let every child have his shoes
C.Kenton Lee and his organization
D.The importance of shoes for children

After the summer break, Delhi's children returned to school and found a new class: happiness.
It wasn't a welcome back joke. In a country where top universities require average test scores above 9%, the Delhi government's decision marks a shift of emphasis (强调) from exams to student well being.
Manish Sisodia is Delhi's education minister. Under his “happiness classes” program, 100,000 Delhi students spend the first half hour of each school day without opening a textbook, learning instead through inspirational (启发性的) stories and activities.
Children appeared interested. “We should work happily,” said Aayush Jha, an 11 year old fresh out of his first happiness class. “When you work sadly, your work will not be good.”
Math teacher Sonu Gupta told his class about what scientist Stephen Hawking had achieved. Upstairs, Santosh Bhatnagar, another teacher, told the class to close their eyes and imagine doing something that made them happy.
“I learned that you should learn to believe yourself and that those who try never fail,” said Dipanshu Kumar, a 12 year old in Gupta's class.
Some teachers, though, remain doubtful. They say the public schools are too crowded for classes based so heavily on classroom interaction (互动).
“If we have 80 students in our class, how can we follow every kid in just 35 minutes?” said English teacher Bharti Dabas.
Others doubt that the happiness classes can change the long lasting emphasis on exams. Geeta Gandhi Kingdon, chair of education, economics and international development at University College London, said that there haven't been any studies to prove their workability.
Sisodia, however, believes that changes need to be made. He asked, “If a person is going through our education system (体系) for 18 years of his life and is becoming an engineer, but is still throwing litter on the ground, then can we really say that the education system is working?”
The purpose of the experiment to teach happiness, Manish Sisodia says, is for schools to develop “good human beings”.
12.What does the underlined word “shift” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Plan. B.Start.
C.Change. D.Possibility.
13.What did Dipanshu Kumar learn from happiness classes
A.Happy people never fail.
B.One should have trust in themselves.
C.Happiness helps produce good work.
D.One should never be afraid of failures.
14.Why did some teachers question the practicability of happiness classes in public schools
A.Students may get away from a teacher's control.
B.There are too many students in public schools.
C.Students are not good at classroom interaction.
D.There are too many classes on a student's timetable.
15.What did Geeta Gandhi Kingdon think of happiness classes
A.They should last longer than half an hour.
B.He doubted their usefulness to students' studies.
C.He doubted their influence on the education system.
D.They gave teachers freedom to choose their own teaching methods.

It's been three years, but it was only a few weeks ago that I was able to look at my old dog's bed without crying. Otis wasn't just my dog; he was my friend. __16__ And many also understand that the loss of a pet can be as hard as the loss of a close friend or family member. Here's why I'll never forget my dog:
My dog understood me. Otis knew well before I reached for my shoes whether or not it was time to get ready for a run. __17__ And it was not just my mood (心情) that he understood. He probably understood much of what I said.
My dog was loyal to the bitter end. For all of the good days we had, my dog and I had our struggles, too. __18__ He forgave me for all of my harsh (严厉的) words. When I needed him, he was there, without fail. It was Otis who sat by my side as I rocked a baby through countless sleepless nights.
__19__ At the end of the day, I cooked, cleaned, worked, shuffled kids from school to after school activities and home again, all without anyone in my family even noticing. Yet my dog was seemingly overjoyed by any effort I made — no matter how small — to keep him fed or happy. __20__
A.My dog would never want me to be tired.
