(2019·上海虹口区·期末) Some people are standing at a group of low hills in West Texas. Suddenly, they observe glowing reddish-orange lights. Are they the headlights of cars on the highway Are they the lights of campfires The people shout and point because the lights are moving! But they aren't moving the way cars move. They shoot up in the air. They fall back to the earth. And then…they simply disappear!
Every night, people go to observe the famous Marfa lights. The lights are named for the town of Marfa, Texas, where these lights can be seen in the distant hills east of the town. Over the years there have been many beliefs about these strange lights. One theory is that the lights are the headlights of cars driving down the road.
But that could not be true. Settlers in the 1880s wrote about the lights long before there were cars with headlights. At that time, pioneers thought the Marfa lights were the campfires of Apaches 2 in the hills. When the pioneers would ride into the hills, they could find no evidence 3 of campsites of fires. Later, the settlers learned that the Apaches, too, could see the lights. They thought the lights were stars that had come down the earth.
Some people say that the lights are moonlight shining on metal in the hills. Others say they are made by gases from swamps 4. Some scientists have tried to prove that lights from planets or starts reflect 5 in a strange way on the hills. That doesn't help us understand why the lights "dance". They move up and down, slow down and speed up. These dancing "stars", the Marfa lights, stay a mystery.

(2020·上海静安区·专项) When your pen is broken, the battery in your toy runs out, or you have some leftover food, what do you do with these things You will probably throw them all into one bin. But actually, all of these pieces of trash need to be sorted (分类) separately.
Garbage sorting is a big issue worldwide. In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on it.
Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a "green account" service for its residents. Account holders get points by correctly sorting their garbage. Through the Alipay app, they can exchange the points for milk, phone cards and other products. The city is asking all of its residents to sort their garbage into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry.
Wet waste is also known as household waste. "They are things you don't want but that pigs can eat," Guangzhou Daily explained.
Paper, metal, glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste. Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries and fluorescent bulbs (荧光灯泡).
Finally, any waste that's not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the "dry waste" bin. Many other Chinese cities are also using this method to sort their garbage. For example, Shenzhen has been sorting its garbage into the same four groups since 2012. Students there also receive waste-sorting guidebooks that they must study.
China is improving its waste-sorting efforts. There is still a long way to go. But it's never too late to learn how to sort your trash properly and protect the environment.
If you don't sort your garbage, all of it will go to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and be buried together. These landfills can take up large areas of ground that could have been used for planting trees or crops. The electronic waste you throw away, such as batteries, can pollute the soil and groundwater. Other pieces of garbage, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled.

In Kansas, America, there are no towns or buildings within miles. So people will tell you directions and distance. They will say, "Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile." Have you ever stayed in a hotel Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable (一次性的) toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers for free. Many guests like the idea because they don't have to bring their own. But, next time, when you are going travelling, don't forget to bring your own things. Some hotels in big cities won't provide guests with disposable things unless the guests ask for them. They want to ask people to use fewer disposable things.
Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It is a waste of natural resources and is very bad for the environment. Do you know, one Chinese person makes as much as 400 kg of waste a year! Most of that waste comes from disposable things. In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year! So the less plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.
Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life: use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones. After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then you can use it over and over. Do not use paper cups. At your school canteen, use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.
