TAIPEI- Increasing numbers of Taiwanese students are joining the island’s “China rush”, seeking education on the Chinese mainland.
“According to official Chinese figures, the number of Taiwanese students admitted into college and postgraduate(研究生)programs on the mainland totaled 461 in 1996, 928 in 1997 and 839 in 1998. Although no latest official numbers were available,” said this number had risen between 30 to 50 percent annually in the past two years with well over 1,000 entering mainland campuses last year.
The Internet site, based in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, provides education service and information on Chinese mainland college and universities. “Many Taiwanese believe a Chinese education giving more knowledge about the people and culture in the mainland will increase their chances in the Chinese job market,” vice-president Ingrid Huang said. “I believe it will give me hands-on experience in the business field in the Chinese mainland and a better understanding of the Chinese mainland people,” said Lydia Chang, a 19-year-old majoring in journalism at Shih Hsin University. Chang plans to go on to get a master’s degree in business administration in Shanghai, which she says offers the best environment for such studies.

I found the imagination of becoming a grandmother somewhat discouraging. I was younger than I thought a grandmother should be when I got the news that I was going to become one myself. I admit, it was not a role that I was emotionally ready to accept. I had been a young mother, and had certainly hoped my daughter would not face that same challenge. I remarried when she was a teenager and then had two more children. On getting the news that she was expecting, I remember thinking “What do I know about being a grandmother —I haven’t even finished raising my own kids yet! ” I don’t like to be unprepared, so I read a few books about grandparenting. That gave me a little help, but I was still uncertain. I thought about other grandmothers I knew, and got a few ideas I liked and a few more that I didn’t. But I couldn’t quite figure out what kind of grandmother I wanted to be. Then I thought about my own grandmother, Granny, as she’s known by most people, and I knew I had the answer.
I didn’t realize it until that moment, but my own grandmother was the example for the kind of grandmother I wanted to be. I am fortunate that I got to spend a lot of time with my grandparents when I was a little kid. Here’s what I learned from my Granny:
Grandmothers always have a cookie jar. For my entire life, Granny always had a cookie jar full of cookies. When I was a little tiny girl, just at eye level with the counter, Granny would get the cookie jar down for me. When I was a little older I learned how to pull the chair over so I could reach. As I got taller if I really stretched, I could reach the cookie jar with my finger tips and move it close enough to get it down off the counter to find out what kind of treat was inside. Always the first thing I did when I went to Granny’s house was check the cookie jar and there were always cookies in it. Many years later, I’ll drive my own children to Granny’s house and the first thing she does is get us all a cookie.
So grandmothers must have a cookie jar and on my granddaughter’ s first Christmas,my daughter bought me my own cookie jar. She said when they came to see me,her daughter would find the treat the way she did and I did.

Scientists have developed a water treatment system that they say is a powerful but simple way to save lives. Four grams of chemicals can treat ten liters of dirty water for a low cost, about ten cents.

Technology has utterly transformed our ability to communicate with each other. Linking to each other both literally and figuratively, many of us connect through cell phones, emails, instant messaging, blogs, and networking web sites, yet we may be less connected to each other than we think.
According to a study, Americans are becoming increasingly socially isolated. The study reveals, for example, that one quarter of Americans say that they have no one to discuss important personal issues with, and that the number of close friends that Americans have has dropped from three to two. Meanwhile, the Boston Globe reports that this spreading isolation is experienced more sharply among those with less education, people of color, and older Americans. Unsurprisingly, those who are young, white, and well-educated tend to have stronger social networks.
From my own experience I have to say that I’ve never felt more connected, thanks to a web of friends, family, and colleagues. One of my closest friends is someone I met through an online discussion group who lives hundreds of miles away from me. We have met face-to-face only twice, yet our regular electronic correspondence and cell phone calls sustain our close friendship. And, speaking of blogging, my blog has introduced me to people I would never have met otherwise and has led to enduring and important friendships.
On the other hand, I recently saw a scene unfold that proved to me how deeply disconnected we as Americans have become. I had just wrapped up a presentation on mediation at a family therapy(治疗) center. As I was leaving, I noticed a mother and her teenage son who had just completed their session with their family therapist(临床医学家). After making their next appointment, they both took out their cell phones, placed calls, and began loud conversations with whoever was on the other end. I walked out behind them to the parking lot to my car. They both jumped into their SUV, and, as I saw them drive off, they were still talking on their cell phones.
But, alas, not to each other.
41. What does the passage lead you to believe

A. Age. B. Education. C. Skin color. D. Sex.
43. The author himself ______.
A. has a wider range of friends because of technology
B. has failed to take advantage of technology
C. can only find the true friendship through the Internet
D. can’t make true friends in actual life
44. What is TRUE about the mother and her son in the passage
A. They came for therapy in the same car.
B. They were quite close to each other.
C. There was not much communication between them.

Life is filled with challenges. As we get older we come to realize that those challenges are the very things that shape us and make us who we are, it is the same with the challenges that come with friendship.
When we are faced with a challenge, we usually have two choices: we can try to beat it off, or we can decide that the thing presenting the challenges isn’t worth the trouble and call it quits. Although there are certainly times when calling it quits is the right thing to do, in most cases all that is needed is commitment and communication.
When we are committed to something, it means that no matter how painful or how uncomfortable something is, we will always choose to face it and work through instead of running away from munication is making a space for discussion and talking about how you feel as opposed to just saying what the other person did wrong. If you can say to a friend, “I got my feelings hurt. ” rather than “You hurt my feelings. ” You are going to be able to solve the problem much faster.
In dealing with many challenges that friendship will bring to you, try to see them for what they are: small hurdles you need to jump or get through on your way through life. Nothing is so big that it is impossible to get over, and hurt only serves to make us stronger. It’s all part of growing up. It happens to everyone, and some day you will look back on all of this and say, “Hard as it was, it made me who I am today. And that’s a good thing. ”

be similar to与…… different与from搭配,far 与from搭配,familiar与to或with搭配,但不符合句意。
3. 【解析】选A。
5. 【解析】选A。
6. 【解析】选C。根据常识,我们在做数学题时会出现大脑一片空白,下面也有提示drawing blanks,故选blank, draw a conclusion (得出结论),draw a line (画一条线),draw a comparison (把……
8. 【解析】选A。
11. 【解析】选A。
根据Why does it work 故选work,work在此是起作用或有效果之意;opens, starts, runs均不符合题意。
13. 【解析】选A。

. . if. . .
22. 【解析】like 表示举例或列举,用like (=for example例如,比方)。
23. 【解析】than 由more可知,要用than表示比较级。

The passage tells us that when we are faced with challenges, all we need is commitment and communication. After dealing with many challenges, we will come to realize that it is challenges that shape us.
Life is filled with challenges. In my study, I always meet with new challenges. When I was in Senior One, I used to fail my final math exams. This was a serious problem because math is a very important subject.
However, I did not quit. I listened to the teacher attentively in class. I also bought some reference books and did as many exercises as I could. Besides, I turned to my teacher and classmates for help. In the end, after several months’ hard work, I passed the final exam.
Looking back on this, I realize that whatever challenges I am faced with, if I can spare no efforts and never give up, I will get them over. What’s more, those challenges make me who I am.
