By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova — not as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
“A lot of skills are needed for the job. Yo u have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.” Mr Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. “I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,” Mr Titterton said, “Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.”
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage. “My husband is the worst page turner,” she laughed. “He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’ “Robert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.”

C. Catching falling objects. D. Performing in his own style.
4. Why is Ms Raspopova’s husband “the worst page turner”

The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have found positive effects. A study conducted in Youngstown,Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)have taken it a step further changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they’re short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater."We’re thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day,"explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow in experiments using some common vegetables. Strano’s team found that they could create a faint light for three-and-a-half hours. The light, about one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by, is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn tree into self-powered street lamps.
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a one-off treatment that would last the plant’s lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off"switch"where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source--such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway--a lot of energy is lost during transmission(传输).
Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
1. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. A new study of different plants. B. A big fall in crime rates.
C. Employees from various workplaces. D. Benefits from green plants.
2. What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineer
A. To detect plants’ lack of water B. To change compositions of plants
C. To make the life of plants longer. D. To test chemicals in plants.
3. What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future
A. They will speed up energy production. B. They may transmit electricity to the home.
C. They might help reduce energy consumption.D. They could take the place of power plants.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Can we grow more glowing plants B. How do we live with glowing plants
C. Could glowing plants replace lamps D. How are glowing plants made pollution-free

1. A 根据题干关键词“to be a page turner”定位到第一段最后一句“I'm not a trained musician, but I've learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.” 故选A。
2. C 根据题干关键词“Titterton’s job on stage”结合第二段的“He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.” 以及第三段的“A lot of skills are needed for the job.”
3. B 根据题干关键词“practise”定位到第四段的最后一句“Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of‘nodding’to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.”
4. D 根据题干关键词“the worst page turner”定位到第六段“He's interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say:‘Turn, turn!’”

1. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves.
分析:此句是复合句,主句为主系表结构,“to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score”是表语;从句为目的状语从句“so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves”。
2. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
分析:He said 是主句,he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.是宾语从句,became nervous是系表结构,as nervous as those是比较状语,分词短语playing instruments作为定语,表示主动
3. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
分析:此句为并列句,“and”后面跟着不定式短语作状语,“to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner” 其中定语从句“which they need to practise with their page turner”修饰“a page turn”。
A study conducted in Youngstown, Ohio, for example ,discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
These include plants that have sensors printed on their leaves to show when they're short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater. 故选A。
Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
Lighting accounts for about 7%of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source-such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway-a lot of energy is lost during transmission. Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
