“Make new friends, but keep the old ones. One is silver and the other is gold.” is a famous saying about friendship. Friendship is so important that the United States made the first Sunday in August National Friendship Day in 1935.
Paper cards were popular years ago, but nowadays, more and more people use e-cards to express their friendship. We can write something on the e-cards, like some beautiful sentences, some poems or just some words you want to say to your friends. Sending cards to each other represent(代表) a development of friendship.
In 1916, an elderly man suggested to Hallmark cards founder, J.C. Hall, that the words of a poem about friendship could be used on a card. That card, using the words of poet Edgar A. Guest, became a best-seller quickly and sold well for 70 years. The poem began, “I’d like to be the sort of friend that you have been to me …”
In 1919, Hall introduced the custom of sending cards to express friendship. He knew that people needed to remember friends with a visit, a letter or a card. The year-round exchange of friendship cards picked up in the late 1950s and became popular during the 1960s and 1970s until today.
