Day 1
A classic English home (P3)
The writer visits the famous setting of many films in England
在《傲慢与偏见》取景地开启复古之旅
I recently took my family to the beautiful Chatsworth House. You might not be familiar with the name, but the house itself has been the film set for many famous movies, including Pride and Prejudice (《傲慢与偏见》) and The Duchess (《公爵夫人》).
The house itself was majestic (壮观的). It is now owned by the 12th Duke and Duchess of Devonshire but was built all the way back in the 16th century. Much of the house’s decoration (装饰) is the same as before, which looks very elegant (优雅的). But today’s owner also added their modern touches to the art and furniture (家具) throughout the house. While I was touring the house, I took many pictures of the rooms which can be seen in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice – it is my favorite film and the reason why I was so desperate (渴望的) to visit the house!
The highlight of the day was the splendid (壮观的) garden next to Chatsworth House. You can see why someone with a love for nature would like this place. It had high-rising rocks and small ponds filled with water lilies (睡莲), not to mention the many different types of trees and flowers. But the best view of the house could be seen at the Emperor Fountain, where the back of the house could be taken in full.

Day 2
Finding luck with magpies ... (P4)
The number of magpies has different meanings in the UK
英国也有“喜鹊好运说”
Magpies (喜鹊) are everywhere all over the world. They often share the common meaning of luck, no matter which culture they are found in. In the UK, there is a poem about what seeing a different number of magpies means:
One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five for Silver
Six for Gold
Seven for a secret never to be told
Three and four are usually understood to show the sex (性别) of a soon-to-be-born child or possibly talking about romantic (浪漫的) success. Five and six mean that the person is likely to soon find wealth (财富). Seven means that a secret will successfully be kept away from curious ears forever. They are all positive, except for seeing just one bird, which means bad luck. However, there is a way out. By simply saluting (敬礼) the bird you can get good luck back again.
There is a saying in China that “the singing of a magpie foretells good luck and happiness while that of a crow bad luck and misery (喜鹊报喜,乌鸦报丧)”. It means that magpies are signs of good luck, while crows are those of bad luck. In the UK, crows are also seen as a bad sign by many people. In TV shows and films, if you see a group of crows crying, that is to introduce an air of misery (悲惨) or death. A group of crows is also called a “murder (凶杀)”, bringing to mind the superstitions (迷信) surrounding the bird.

Online zoo adoptions (P4-5)
People show their support online to help zoo animals.
People are helping Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo by “adopting” zoo animals online
云认养推出:疫情冲击下动物园如何自救?
In February 2021, Chen Kaiyin from Beijing paid 2,000 yuan and “adopted (领养)” a lesser panda (or red panda) at Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo in Jiangsu. The zoo would use the money to buy food for its animals and to pay for their medical care.
As for Chen, she got a certificate and could learn about the lesser panda’s daily life online. She can go to the zoo for free. She also gets the chance to feed the animal and clean its living space.
Animals like golden monkeys, koalas and tigers are all on the adoption list, according to the zoo’s WeChat account. Each animal has its own profile (简介) including a photo, its age, sex and personality (性格). For example, it shows that a 7-year-old golden monkey named Jinxiaomeng is a bold and smart “girl”. People can adopt the animals in their own name or in the name of their family, school or company.
Online adoption is one of the ways the Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo gets help to get through hard times. More than 80 percent of the zoo’s income (收入) comes from visitors buying tickets. But visitor numbers go down greatly because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The adoption has worked well with people’s warm support. “At present, about 150 animals have been adopted,” a zoo staff said to NTV. “This did help the economic (经济的) situation of the zoo. But more importantly, it is a form of spiritual encouragement (精神鼓励) and support. Through online activities, we can draw more people’s attention to support and protect wild animals.”
New ways to raise money
Like Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo, many zoos have also faced the same kind of problems during the pandemic. However, some of them have come up with new ideas to raise money.
* Livestreams of animals
Shanghai Wildlife Park livestreams from 9 to 11 am every day to show how their animals live. Thousands of people watch pandas eat bamboo or a line of flamingos walking with zookeepers and send tips (打赏). So far, the zoo has nearly 3.5 million followers on the Douyin platform.
* Create animal stars
In Jiangsu, a cute but naughty (淘气的) monkey named Kai Sa has become a star at Nantong Forest Safari Park. Many of his fans have bought the zoo’s annual membership card (年卡) and visit it every weekend.
* Make cultural and creative products
Beijing Zoo has brought out ice creams in the shape of elephants, giraffes, pandas and parrots. It also makes stuffed toys (毛绒玩具) and Rubik’s cubes with images of tigers on them.
zoos’ new roles
These new ways to raise money make people rethink how a zoo functions. Shen Zhijun, the head of the Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo, said modern zoos should no longer be places for visitors to just see animals. Zoos can teach people how to protect animals. ”Adoption” is one way for more people to join in and know more about animals. This helps with animal protection.
“Our zoo animals are not there for entertainment (娱乐). We want to give them a comfortable living environment with respect and love,” Shen said.

Am I good enough (P6)
Don’t doubt yourself!
你有“冒充者综合征”吗?
Are you ever doubted your abilities or believed that you don’t deserve your success Then you may have impostor syndrome (冒充者综合征). Researchers from Germany have recently found that this syndrome can happen to people regardless of age, gender or intelligence.
What is impostor syndrome
Although it’s often called a “syndrome”, impostor syndrome is not an actual disease (疾病) – it’s a negative (负面的) way of thinking.
People who have experienced impostor syndrome might have thoughts like “I’m a failure” or “I have to work harder than everyone else”.
They might also feel that their achievements don’t deserve any praise (赞赏). They believe any of their success is because of luck rather than their skills or hard work.
Impostor syndrome affects many people around the world, from teens to adults. It might surprise you that many successful people experience this as well.
How can impostor syndrome be overcome
It’s important to remember that this feeling is very normal.
One tip is to stop comparing yourself to others. Quite often, you don’t see the full picture of another person’s success. British physicist Anthony Leggett, who won a Nobel Prize in 2003, said: “I missed out on standard high school physics, so I have always been a bit confused about simple things like why the noise from a kettle stops as the water nears boiling.”
It’s impossible for everyone to be good at everything. Next time you doubt your abilities, remember that it’s perfectly normal and you can work to overcome those feelings.
Choose the answer:
1. What do we know about impostor syndrome
A. Lucky people are more likely to get it.
B. Anyone at any age can get the syndrome.
C. Everyone who has it is successful.
D. People who often fail are more likely to get it.

D. “I have been working hard enough.”
3. Which of the following can help deal with the syndrome
a. Stopping caring about simple things.
b. Accepting that negative feelings are normal.
c. Learning more about successful physicists.
d. Stopping comparing yourself with other people.
A. ab B. ac C. bc D. bd
4. What is the passage mainly about
A. How to live a confident life.
B. Why people deserve praise.
C. An introduction to impostor syndrome.
D. The difficulties faced by successful people.
Day 5
Cloze
There was once a farmer who was a neighbor of a baker. Each week, the farmer would 1 a pound of butter to the baker. And in return, the baker would sell the farmer a pound of bread. This 2 for some time.
But one day, the baker decided to 3 the butter that the farmer had sold him. To his surprise, he found that the butter was not a full pound, 4 he paid the full price for it. The baker was quite 5 about this. He decided to take the farmer to court (法庭).
After they were in court, the judge (法官) asked the farmer 6 he was measuring the weight of the butter properly. The farmer replied, “Your honor, I do measure my butter properly. And I measure my bread properly 7 .”
The judge was confused (迷惑的) by this. “What do you mean, farmer ” he asked.
The farmer replied, “Your honor, I have been buying bread from this baker for as 8 as I’ve sold him butter. Every time I buy bread from him, I take it home and put it on my scale (天平). I then sell him the 9 weight in butter. So if anyone is to blame, it is the baker.”
You may have 10 the “golden rule” – that is, to treat others as you would like to be treated. If you go through life cheating (欺骗) others, then you should not be surprised when you are cheated yourself.
