To learn about the problem of building the Aswan Dam and solutions to it.
To think about the reason of other countries offering help to the Egyptian project.
To think about the value of the protection of cultural heritage.
You must heard of Three Gorges Dam of China. However, have you heard about the Aswan Dam of Egypt
Three Gorges Dam
Aswan Dam
n.水坝
On July 21, 1970, engineers completed the Aswan Dam in southern Egypt. The Aswan Dam was an extremely large project, lasting more than 10 years and costing more than a billion dollars.
The Aswan Dam controls the flow (泛滥) of the Nile River. The dam protects people living near the banks of the Nile from both floods and drought. It also provides electricity used in homes, schools, businesses, and hospitals throughout Egypt.

Watch a video.
Look at the two pictures. What are they telling us
Which country do you think the images in the pictures can be found
How are the title and the pictures connected
FROM PROBLEMS TO SOLUTIONS
Read the title and look at the pictures.
What do you think the text is about
FROM PROBLEMS TO SOLUTIONS
The title suggests the text is about how people have solved problems, because they are going “from” the problems “to” solutions. The pictures show some ancient statues. They might be from Egypt. The large faces look as though they have been moved from where they first were. Perhaps the problem is related to this.
Scan the text for numbers. Circle the numbers and guess what they mean.

What can you learn from these numbers Why does the author use exact numbers instead of expressions like “a lot of”
What can you infer from “Over the next 20 years, thousands of engineers and workers rescued 22 temples and count less cultural relics”, and “Fifty countries donated nearly $80 million to the project”
The project is so hard that it takes 20 years to finish it.
The project cost a lot of money. Many countries participated in the rescue and it is their team work that has saved the temples.

The proposal that the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam across the Nile led to protests; The government turned to the United Nations for help; The work began; German engineers moved the first temple; The project ended。
然后在时间轴上把时间点和相对应发生的事件标记出来。如下图所示:
Why did the government ask the UN for help
What help did the UN offer
Do you agree “the beginning is always the hardest”
Who moved the first temple
Does the completion of the project inspire you Why In what way
Match the following events with their purposes.
