Day 1
Face the difficulties in life like a a lion! (P3)
Zhejiang publishing united group
A great book about growing pain
《雄狮去流浪》:顽强生存,追求辉煌
I have always been fascinated by the animal world. Recently, I read a novel about animals called A Lion’s Traveling (《雄狮去流浪》). Chinese writer Shen Shixi wrote it.
The book tells the story of five male (雄性的) lions. They are driven out of their home and begin their adventure (冒险). Unluckily, one is hurt by a giraffe. Another is killed by a hunter (猎人). The third one dies during a fight for water with a rhino (犀牛). The fourth lion drowns (淹死). Only the youngest one, named Red Ribbon, is still alive. After going through many difficulties, he finally becomes the lion king.
The story shows the love and care between friends, the life and death faced by brothers, the determination (决心) to deal with challenges, and the passion (热情) for life. The fact that the young lion finally becomes the king teaches me a great lesson: Those who cannot defeat you will make you stronger. Everyone will face lots of difficulties during their lifetime. We should learn to stay strong and continue to find our better selves.
The book is filled with exciting details (细节) about the life of lions. Together with vivid (生动的) pictures, it gives readers an immersive (沉浸的) experience. You can not only read the great story but also learn a lot about the animals in the real world. I highly recommend (推荐) it!

On Nov 21, a special soccer game took place in Doha, the capital city of Qatar. This was not in the 2022 World Cup, but a friendly match between some Chinese teenage players and their peers (同龄人) from Qatar.
The 11 Chinese teenagers are members of the program “2022 Project Hope: Mengniu World Cup Youth Football Charity Tour”. The program was organized by Mengniu Group to promote exchanges (交流) between the two countries. “We hope that soccer, a sport with a long history and wide circulation (流传), can become a messenger of peace and make the world a better place,” said Chen Yiyi, vice president of Mengniu Group.
At the same time, these teenagers also acted as student reporters for 21st Century Teens, sharing their experiences in Qatar with our readers.
What most impressed (使印象深刻) Huang Junyu, the captain (队长) of the Chinese team, was their fierce (激烈的) game with the Qatari teenage players. vThey were behind three goals in the first half of the game. But during the second half, Huang scored a hat trick (帽子戏法) – three goals in a row– and finally ended the game in a draw. “The Qatar team is good at attacking (进攻), but we had the spirit of never giving up,” Huang said after the match.
Liao Junxi, a guard on the team, said he not only learned things from the Qatar team but also made friends with them. “They have good physical strength (体力) and good teamwork,” he said. “I remembered a player named Jordan who was very outgoing and friendly. I accidentally (意外地) rushed into him on the field, and he just laughed it off. Soccer brings us closer.”

Players from both sides play cuju. PROVIDED TO TEENS
The Chinese teenagers not only played the friendly match but also brought cuju to the field. The young players from both sides changed into traditional Chinese cuju outfits and experienced traditional Chinese football culture together.
As the ancestor of soccer, cuju first showed up in the ancient Chinese work Zhan Guo Ce (“Strategies of the Warring States”). It was a form of entertainment among the public. Players kick a ball through an opening into a net. The word “cu” means to kick and “ju” refers to an ancient type of leather (皮的) ball filled with feathers (羽毛).
“We can do many fancy (花式的) moves in cuju. Both sides had a lot of fun playing it,” said Zhang Lu, one of the Chinese teenage players.
MEET THE CHINESE TEEN PLAYERS
Huang Junyu, 14, Guangdong
Meizhou in Guangdong province is known as “the hometown of modern Chinese soccer”. Many famous players, including Wu Weiying and Wang Peng, come from the city. Born and growing up there, Huang Junyu developed an interest in soccer at an early age. With the support of his family, Huang got professional training. He once got into the national U12 team, too.
Liao Junxi, 14, Shannxi
Liao Junxi’s connection with soccer started when he was a baby! His mother stood beside the field with Liao in her arms to watch the soccer games in which Liao’s father worked as a coach. Liao started to play soccer at 3 years old and became a school team member in grade three. Soccer star Lionel Messi is his idol. “I hope to be as good as Messi one day,” he said.
Chen Linqi, 12, Hubei
Soccer was the most loved sport of Chen Linqi’s father. They two used to play soccer together every Saturday until 2020 when his father lost his life in the fight against COVID-19 in Wuhan. Although saddened, Chen carried on the heroic (英勇的) spirit of his father and continued their shared hobby. “When I am on the field, I feel my father is still there with me,” said Chen. Now he is already a leading player in the U12 team of Wuhan and has won lots of titles. Chen takes soccer player Kylian Mbappe as his role model. He wants to meet him in person one day.

Master’s story
Hou Yan, 48, is the president and Party secretary of Qinqiang Theater of the Ningxia Performing Arts Group. She started learning Qinqiang Opera from her mother when she was 4 years old.
Training in the basic skills of Qinqiang Opera is very challenging. In 1985, Hou studied at an art school in Ningxia where teachers were very strict with students. Leg stretching, waist bending (下腰) and somersaults (翻筋斗) were just some of Hou’s daily training routines (常规). While training, each basic move had to be held for half an hour. A single mistake meant possibly she needed to start all over again.
Her hard work paid off. Hou became a performer with a troupe (剧团) in Yinchuan, Ningxia, at the age of 16. But in 1993, pop and Western music became so popular that they hit Qinqiang Opera hard. The troupe was closed and Hou had no choice but to leave the opera stage (舞台) she loved.
However, in the past years, China has done a lot to develop its traditional culture. Hou returned to the stage in the year 2000 and devoted (致力于) herself to the opera form. “Although I left the stage for several years, I never stopped practicing. I felt happier than ever before when I was back to perform (表演) again.” said Hou.
Now, Hou’s team presents hundreds of Qinqiang Opera performances every year in the towns and villages of Ningxia. The average age of Hou’s opera team is 30. In 2021, they gave about 150 school performances.
“As we become more confident about our culture, more young people take traditional culture as a fashionable trend (时尚的潮流) and become promoters (传播者) of our own culture,” said Hou.

Day 4
Eating green and clean (P6)
How can food help save Earth
食物也能拯救地球?
Driving a car, buying clothes, using heating in winter – lots of things you do send out CO2 into the air. But did you know that the food you eat every day plays a big role in your carbon footprint (碳足迹), too
According to The Conversation, an Australian website, about one-third of the world’s carbon emissions (排放) come from agriculture (农业) and food. To create fewer carbon emissions from food systems, the whole process should be thought about – including growing, processing, transportation (运输) and waste. The Conversation provides some ideas that can reduce (减少) carbon emissions in food systems. Here are two examples.
Smart fertilizers
When people make traditional fertilizers (肥料), they need to burn coal. That causes lots of carbon emissions. At the same time, fertilizers are often overused, creating greater land pollution. Now, some companies are making smart bio-fertilizers. They let microorganisms (微生物) live together with crops. This not only reduces carbon emissions but also helps the ecosystem (生态系统) become healthier.
Vertical farming
Vertical (垂直的) farms take up small plots (小块地) of land and grow crops in a controlled environment. This way of farming helps to save land so that more forests can be grown. Some new vertical farms also use energy-saving LED lights to produce year-round pared with traditional farms, these new types of farms use less water and labor. They can save both resources (资源) and manpower (人力).
Understanding carbon LANGUAGE
The latest Standard Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese (《现代汉语规范词典》) came out in August. It has about 1,000 new phrases. “Carbon neutrality” and “carbon peaking” are in it. Let’s take a look at some phrases related to “carbon”.
● Carbon neutrality 碳中和
Many people, companies and countries around the world have promised to become carbon neutral. It means that the CO2 they send out will be the same amount as the CO2 they remove from the air. As forests and plants can absorb CO2, as long as we reduce our carbon emissions and try to protect the environment, carbon neutrality is possible.
● Carbon peaking 碳达峰
When an area or industry’s annual (年度的) carbon dioxide emissions reach the highest value in history, emissions then stop increasing and begin to decline (下降).
● Carbon capture and storage 碳捕获与碳储存
It means capturing and storing carbon dioxide before it enters the air. The carbon dioxide is usually captured from large sources of emissions, such as a power plant, and then stored underground.
● Carbon market 碳市场

In this market, companies can buy and sell their carbon emission allowances (配额).
How can we reduce carbon emissions THROUGH our diets
World Wide Fund For Nature (世界自然基金会) has given some advice for people to reduce their carbon footprint while being healthy.
Eat more plants
Have more vegetables and whole grains (全谷类).
Eat a variety of foods
Don’t be picky and have a colorful plate.
Waste less food
One-third of food for humans is wasted.
Enjoy more plant-based proteins (蛋白质)
Tofu, green peas, soy beans and plant-based meat are all rich in proteins.
Eat fewer foods high in fat, salt and sugar
They are not good for your health.

Think and discuss
Why can eating less meat reduce your carbon footprint
Answer: The more meat we eat, the more grain is needed to feed the animals that provide the meat, along with the extra water and land used to grow that grain. Huge amounts of carbon dioxide are emitted during the production of meat. We can reduce all those emissions by eating grain directly.

a. They hurt microorganisms in crops.
b. Coal is burned to make them.
c. The overuse of them causes land pollution.
d. They become a part of the ecosystem.
A. ab B. ac C. bc D. bd
3. Why is a vertical farm better than a traditional one
A. It uses fewer LED lights.
B. It can help plants grow faster.
C. It can save more land.
D. It doesn’t need water and sunlight.
Day 5
Cloze
One day, a student asked his teacher, “What is greed ” The teacher didn’t answer his question 1 , but asked the student to walk through the chocolate factory next to their school and pick out the 2 chocolate bar he could find. But there was a rule: As he passed through the factory, he could not 3 back.
The student went to the chocolate factory. As he walked, he saw a large chocolate bar. He liked it, but thought he might be able to find an even bigger one 4 he kept going. He kept walking and saw another chocolate bar. This one was a little bigger. But 5 , he thought he could find an even bigger one if he kept going. As he neared the end of the factory, he saw fewer chocolate bars, and none of them were as large as the earlier ones. He started to 6 his decision to keep going.
