Day 1
Sitting to find a buddy (P3)
Sammie Vance draws comic strips to spread her idea behind the bench project. SAMMIE’S BUDDY BENCH PROJECT WEBSITE
A girl builds benches of friendships
她在校园搭建“交友椅”
When she was just 8, Sammie Vance thought about a question: What breaks your heart “For me, it’s seeing people who need a friend,” the seventh grader from Indiana, US, told People magazine. “I’ve been lonely myself. I don’t want others to feel that way.”
Soon after a summer camp, Vance learned about buddy benches (“伙伴长椅”). These benches are seats at a school playground. A lonely child can sit on it, which shows that he or she is in need of a friend.
She loved this idea. “This would be really cool to have at my school,” Vance said. Then she got into action immediately. She collected 725 kilograms of bottle caps and found a company to turn the caps into benches for her school. According to Vance, these recycled benches cost much less than regular (普通的) park benches and are good for the environment.
Vance collected more for benches at other schools too. She also made a Facebook page for others to follow her journey and make bottle cap donations (捐赠). She was surprised that her small project has had an impact (影响) on people around the world. She even received bottle caps from Germany, Australia and Israel.
Today, Vance has helped make 200 recycled benches in schools and neighborhoods. But she has no plans of stopping. She said in an interview that even adults can use a buddy bench because people at any age can feel lonely.
“I just look forward to making a difference,” she said, “and inspiring (激励) other people to make a difference.”

Unfolding ideas (P4-5)

An origami master promotes Chinese culture through art
裴浩正:通过折纸艺术传播中国文化
In origami (折纸) artist Pei Haozheng’s eyes, a single sheet of paper holds great possibilities. He can fold it into anything, with imagination as the only limit (限制).
In September, he set the Guinness World Record for most origami flowers made from a single sheet of paper.
He used his skill in his work, Deer with 100 Flowers (《花生满鹿》). It’s an origami deer (鹿) with 100 roses on its antlers (鹿角). Without cuts or glue, he uses a piece of paper with side lengths of 2.22 meters to finish the whole work.
As for the idea for the work, Pei said, it comes from a Chinese idiom (成语), huasheng manlu, which means glory (荣耀) and perfection (美满). It’s not only to show the wishes for Chinese youth to have a bright future, but also the deep love for our country.
Pei got into origami as a child. At first, he learned folding from teachers and parents, and later he copied the patterns from books. From cranes (鹤) to planes, he was drawn into the “paper world”.
For Pei, origami is an art that needs many skills. For example, it needs knowledge of math to make sure everything is in the right place, such as the different angles (角度) and the lengths of the creases (折痕). However, Pei thinks it is important to keep a balance between artistic beauty and precision (精确). Going too far with either won’t make good work.
As an origami artist, Pei sees it as his mission (任务) to tell the Chinese story through his paper-based language. “For me, origami is not just a craft, but an art that can deliver (传递) culture and last forever,” said Pei.
What is origami
Origami is the art of folding objects out of paper. In Japanese, “ori” means “folding” and “gami” means “paper”. This art form was first developed in China but Japan became known for it. Origami cranes are one of the most famous origami designs in Japan.
Traditional origami uses only one piece of paper and only folding is allowed. Cutting and gluing (粘贴) are neither standard (符合标准的) nor encouraged.
Origami helps to solve problems
Origami is not just a form of art. It can also provide answers to real-world problems. Inspired (受到启发) by origami, US scientist Robert J Lang had a better way of folding car airbags (安全气囊) to protect passengers. Also, the US used origami in space. Origami inspired the folding of solar panels (太阳能板) on a satellite (卫星) in order to put it into a rocket.

Day 3
Cool ball comes to town (P6)
Al Rihla is the official match ball for the 2022 World Cup. VCG
Shape and material make “Al Rihla” the fastest ball ever
“世上最快足球”登场啦!
If you want to play soccer, there is one thing that you just can’t do without – the ball! Now, the FIFA World Cup is taking place in Qatar. And the players are using a new ball. It’s the fastest soccer ball ever!
Its name is Al Rihla, which means “the journey” in Arabic. The design comes from Qatar’s architecture (建筑), its flag and the sailboats (帆船) the country is famous for.
The faster speed of the ball comes from its new panel (拼块) shape and material. Its polyurethane (PU, 聚氨酯) skin has a new 20-piece panel shape. It makes the ball more stable (稳定的) in the air. Apart from that, the core of the ball is designed to help players pass and shoot more accurately, according to FIFA. Such a design comes from testing in labs, wind tunnels (风洞) and on soccer fields. As the first World Cup ball made with only water-based inks (墨) and glues, it is good for the environment, too!
There are other new technologies used in this World Cup. For example, there are AI referees (裁判) on the field. They use 12 cameras to closely track (追踪) the players’ movements to make judgments. There is also a sensor in the ball that can tell the AI referees its exact location.
Although it’s winter, the temperature in Qatar can still be more than 20 C. To make players feel OK, the stadiums (场馆) use a special cooling system. It cools down different areas at different temperatures, since players may need cooler air than the audience (观众).
Famous balls in the history of the World Cup
Match balls are important for players’ performances. To adapt to (适应) the sport, soccer balls in the FIFA World Cup are always evolving (进化). Let’s check out some other famous World Cup balls.
1970
Telstar
It was the first World Cup ball to use the truncated icosahedron (截角二十面体) design, with 12 black pentagonal (五边形的) and 20 white hexagonal (六边形的) panels. Such a design is very common today.
1982
Tango Espana
It was the first ball to be water-resistant (防水的). It was also the last ball made of leather (真皮).
1986
Azteca
It was the first ball to include designs inspired (赋予灵感) by the host nation (Mexico).
1998
Tricolore
The Tricolore was the first multi-colored (多色的) World Cup ball.
2006
Teamgeist
It was the first ball to change from 32 panels, which had been introduced in 1970. The new ball had just 14 panels.
2022
AL RIHLA
It is the official match ball for the
2022 World Cup.
Wind tunnel testing
From soccer to spacecraft, engineers use wind tunnel tests to help design things with good aerodynamics (空气动力). Wind tunnels are used to test almost everything that moves through the air. Soccer designers use the test to better understand the flow of air over and around a soccer ball, as well as its stability (稳定性) when flying through the air.
A wind tunnel is usually in the shape and form of a tunnel, through which air flows. The wind is usually made by electric-powered fans. The soccer ball in the tunnel doesn’t move. It’s the air that moves around the ball, creating different air movements such as drag (拖拽) and lift (抬起). The effects air movements have caused on the ball will be recorded and analyzed (分析).
For example, researchers from the University of Tsukuba in Japan did wind tunnel tests on different soccer balls. They found that rough (粗糙的) balls, instead of smooth ones, tend to be more stable when flying through the air, reported website Science X.
