No kids left behind (P2)
Students in Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture, Sichuan, attend class. VCG
China has solved the long-standing dropout problem
我国实现辍学学生“动态清零”
In 2018, more than 60,000 primary and middle school students dropped out of school in Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture (自治县), Sichuan province. Today, the number of dropouts (辍学者) is zero, reported China Daily.
Liangshan is an example of China’s success in solving the long-standing dropout problem. The country has realized “dynamic-zero (动态清零)” dropout for primary and middle school students, Huai Jinpeng, minister (部长) of education, said in a recent conference (发布会).
Different levels of government have made great efforts (努力) to solve the problem. In Liangshan, for example, the government has set up records on all dropouts after carrying out four rounds of surveys by visiting students’ homes. The records detail (详细记录) each student’s reason for dropping out, their age, family situation and mental (心理的) and physical health conditions. As the records showed, many young people dropped out of school because they got married or started working at an early age.
With the information, local officials have taken action. Since 2019, the local government has set up checkpoints (检查站) on highways to stop dropouts from leaving. More than 5,300 students who left to find work in cities have been persuaded (说服) to return to school.
Moreover, through scholarships (奖学金) and subsidies (补助), the government has made sure that no student drops out of school due to poverty (贫穷). In the past 10 years, financial aid was given to students with financial difficulties almost 1.3 billion times in China.
Thanks to these efforts, education coverage (覆盖) at different stages (学段) in China has either reached or surpassed (超过) the average (平均) level of that in middle- and high-income countries across the world.

Still packing a punch (P4)
Wing Chun is one of Chinese traditional martial arts. MANDARIN FILMS LIMITED
A master of Wing Chun is passing on his skills to others
梁忠威:叶准传人潜心传承咏春拳
When you think of Chinese kung fu, what first comes to your mind Maybe tai chi or Shaolin kung fu. But have you ever heard of Wing Chun (咏春拳)
Wing Chun is a traditional fist style that started in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties in South China.
This kung fu style calls for quick arm movements (动作) and strong legs to win against opponents (对手) at close range (范围). To build up speed, people usually practice with a stand-in opponent-a dummy made of wood. Apart from this, Wing Chun also needs people to be flexible (灵活的) and soft while building up strength (力量) to fight back. Just like the flexible nature of bamboo!
In 2014, Wing Chun was added to the national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) list. It has also become popular worldwide through action films.
Master’s story
Ip Man (叶问, 1893-1972) was a martial artist and a grandmaster of Wing Chun. His eldest son Ip Chun (叶准) is one of the most successful Wing Chun teachers today.
In 1970, Liang Zhongwei was lucky enough to be able to learn from master Ip Chun and became one of Ip’s first batch (批) of students. To this day, the 70-year-old has been practicing Wing Chun for more than 50 years.
“My master is a cultured man. He taught me with strict attention to detail (细节),” said Liang. From then on each day Liang would practice basic (基本的) skills including the horse riding stance (扎马步) and striking a wooden dummy (木人桩) for three hours.
It’s easy for beginners to get started with simple moves. But to move to a higher level, Liang thinks the key lies in relaxing. Nervousness (紧张) makes people stiff (僵硬的). Once they calm down and are at peace, they can focus and throw a more powerful punch (出拳).
After Liang retired (退休) in the 1990s, he focused on promoting Wing Chun. He has taught more than 5,000 people in over 30 kung fu clubs across the country.
Liang encourages everyone to practice Wing Chun. He thinks learning is not just about fighting. People can take it as a hobby or as physical exercise. “People can practice Wing Chun with different goals, ” Liang said.

Young voices
A group of students from Zhuhai, Guangdong, have been learning Wing Chun for long. How do they like it
Gong Kaixuan, 14
At the age of 6, I watched the movie Ip Man with my parents. I was surprised by those cool kung fu moves. Then I decided to learn Wing Chun myself. What I like most about Wing Chun is the dexterity (灵活) of the hands. Every punch has to be fast, precise (精准的) and hard. After learning Wing Chun for eight years, it has influenced me not only physically but mentally (心理地). Now I don’t get angry easily. In the face of unexpected (意外的) things, I can still stay calm and peaceful.
Wu Baoying, 14
Since I was 5, I have been learning Wing Chun. Kung fu begins with virtue (德行). Practicing Wing Chun helps to improve my morals (品行). We honor the master and respect his teaching. Now I’ve moved from practicing punching to the use of weapons, like the butterfly sword (八斩刀) and the dragon pole (六点半棍). They can be heavy for a girl to handle, but I never give up and work harder to catch up with boys.
Wing Chun in films
Wing Chun has also made its way into cinema. Here’s a checklist of Wing Chun films.
Ip Man (2008)
《叶问》
It’s the first installment (部分) of the Ip Man series. Starring Donnie Yen (甄子丹), it tells the story of the legendary (传奇的) Ip Man, the first Wing Chun grandmaster to teach the art to the large public. Intense fight scenes are the series’ biggest draw.
The Grandmaster (2013)
《一代宗师》
It’s another one of the famous Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai’s typical movies: light on narrative (叙述), but full of elegance (优雅). By following the story of grandmaster Ip Man, the film shows a bigger picture of kung fu in the 1930s.

A view of Shougang Industrial Park VCG
Old industrial buildings have put on new looks
废旧工厂变身文旅新地标
Run-down buildings, rotted (腐烂的) doors, rusty (生锈的) machines ... this is how you might picture an old industrial site (工业场地). But many of them now have a new look in China.
Shougang Industrial Park in Shijingshan district of Beijing is now a famous and popular culture and sports site. However, it used to be a steel mill (钢铁厂) that was built in 1919. It once housed 60,000 workers and made more than 10 million tons of iron (铁) and steel. To protect the environment, however, the mill slowly reduced its production (生产) from 2005 until it closed in 2010.
With the government’s support, the old mill has been reborn. Cafes, bookstores, hotels, and offices now fill Shougang’s warehouses and blast furnaces (高炉). Self-driving cars move around the place for testing. And during the 2022 Winter Games, Olympic athletes flew down the Big Air Ramp, which is now in front of Shougang’s former (之前的) cooling towers.
Xu Zhaolin, from Beijing, visits the industrial park a lot. “It’s hard to imagine that the park used to be a steel mill,” said the 24-year-old to Teens. “It feels like you’ve come into a sci-fi game. The photos I took there look like cyberpunk (赛博朋克)!”
Like Shougang park, in recent years, many old factories and mills have been turned into cultural and tourist sites. For example, the World of Tsingtao is a beer museum inside the old factory of the Tsingtao Brewery, one of China’s largest breweries (啤酒厂). The museum has brought people closer to the long history of the brewery. Today, China is home to 194 national-level industrial heritage (遗产) sites.
Old factories and workshops across the country are like a book on the history of Chinese manufacturing (制造业). Giving new life to them through protection and development (发展) is important for driving cities’ innovation (创新) and development, noted People’s Daily.
Answer the following questions:
1. What did Shougang Industrial Park use to be
________________________________________ ________________________________________
2. Why did Shougang close in 2010

5. Please translate the following sentence:
Breathing new life into them is not only a trend for cities growing in innovation but very important for bringing “new drivers of development”.

Flying magic monkey tech (P6)
Chinese scientists have developed high tech tools to study snub-nosed monkeys. VCG
Chinese scientists have developed new tools for counting monkeys
新技术助力秦岭金丝猴种群研究
On Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi, there are a lot of snub-nosed monkeys (金丝猴). But how do we know the exact (准确的) number
A research team from China’s Northwest University has found a way to count them, reported CCTV News. They combined drones (无人机) with thermal imaging (热成像) technology. The cameras on the drones can “see” the monkeys by detecting (探测) their body heat.
“The best time to count them is at night,” said He Gang from the research team. “During the daytime, the monkeys go everywhere to look for food. But at night, they go back home and stay in groups together. Then we can fly the drones to ‘scan (扫描)’ the area and count the bright dots on the screen.”
In the test area, the team counted the exact number of the snub-nosed monkeys for the first time – there are 502 of them! “We used to walk step by step in the forests. This method (方法) has changed our traditional way of studying wild animals,” said He.
Another research team, also from Northwest University, has used facial recognition (面部识别) technology to identify (识别) the monkeys. With cameras set up in the mountains, the AI system can learn the monkeys’ facial features and automatically (自动地) recognize the monkeys. The research team hopes to create a database (数据库) to include every monkey living on Qinling Mountain.
CHARMING WAY TO THE TOP
In Journey to the West, the Monkey King is the head of all the monkeys. But scientists find that in real life, snub-nosed monkeys don’t have a “king”. Their top leader is the head of a small family. The head is usually a strong male monkey. But they also win that position through their charm (魅力). How Scientists find that grooming (梳毛) is a good way for snub-nosed monkeys to show their charm.
