It had been so long, so many years since I’d done this, and I wondered if I’d made a spectacle of ____24____. I let the spool roll in my left hand ____25____ I ran, feeling the string cutting my right hand again as it went through. The kite was lifting behind my shoulder now, and I ran harder. I had quit flying since a quarter of century ago, but suddenly I was twelve again and ____29____ was there in my instinct came rushing back.

故填at。
故填when或as。
故填could。
故填that或which。
故填what。

(A)
Teenagers will be told to “stand up for their elders” on public transport—or risk losing their right to free travel.
London Mayor Boris Johnson will introduce plans lately to make youngsters sign a “courtesy pledge” to promise to behave in a respectful manner when traveling in the capital. The three-point pledge states that they will give up their seats to the elderly, pregnant and disabled; refrain(克制)from using offensive or threatening language; and be courteous and polite to fellow passengers and staff. Those who refuse, or are caught behaving in a loutish manner, will have their free travel passes removed.
The plan—a key part of Mr. Johnson’s re-election bid—will first of all affect the 400,000 11-to-15 year-olds in London who qualify for free travel cards.
Mr. Johnson said he was determined to solve the anti-social behavior of a “minority of youngsters” on public transport. “When I was a boy, I was taught to stand up for those less able to,” he said. “Youngsters enjoy the privilege of free travel, which is paid for by Londoners, but they have to understand that with that privilege comes responsibility. Anyone who abuses this privilege will have it taken away, and will have to earn that right back.”
Teenagers found guilty of a serious breach(违反)of the new behavior code will lose their travel passes, and will have to carry out unpaid community work to have them restored.
Mr. Johnson is also introducing a “two strikes and you’re out” policy to deal with repeat offenders, under which those committing a second breach of the code will lose their travel rights forever.”
56. What can be inferred about London teenagers’ behavior on public transport
A. All of them are ready to help the less able to.
B. They all extend a warm welcome to the “courtesy pledge”.
C. They will promise to be respectful to other passengers.
D. Some of them do not behave themselves.
57. Which of the following could probably be the meaning of “loutish”
A. respectful B. rude C. courteous D. threatening
58. Which of the following is NOT a reason for the introduction of the “courtesy pledge”
A. Urging some London teenagers to behave themselves on public transport
B. Winning people for the success of Mr. Boris Johnson’s re-election.
C. Eliminating London teenagers’ right to free travel on public transport
D. Trying to restore the awareness of responsibility on the part of some youngsters
59. Who will never restore their right to free travel on public transport
A. Those who have abused their privilege of free travel.
B. Those who refuse to offer their seats to the less able to.
C. Those who have done community work for pay.
D. Youngsters who have broken the courtesy code more than once.

Is language, like food, a basic human need without which a child at a critical period of life can be starved and damaged Judging from the drastic experiment of Frederick I in the thirteenth century, it may be hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent.
All the infants died before the first year. But clearly there was more than lack of language here. What was missing was good mothering. Without good mothering, in the first year of life especially, the capacity to survive is seriously affected.
Today no such severe lack exists as that ordered by Frederick I. Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the signals of the infant, whose brain is programmed to learn language rapidly. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again. A bird learns to sing and to fly rapidly at right time, but the process is slow and hard once the critical stage has passed.
Experts suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ. At twelve weeks a baby smiles and makes vowel-like sounds; at twelve months he can speak simple words and understand simple commands; at eighteen months he has a vocabulary of three to fifty words. At three he knows about 1,000 words which he can put into sentences, and at four his language differs from that of his parents in style rather than in grammar.
Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity to speak. What is special about man’s brain, compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of, say, a toy-bear with the sound pattern “toy bear”. And even more incredible is the young brain’s ability to pick out an order in language from the mixture of sound around him, to analyse, to combine and recombine the parts of a language in new ways.
But speech has to be induced(激发), and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the child’s babbling(咿呀声), grasping and smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child’s nonverbal signals is essential to the growth and development of language.
63. Frederick I did the experiment to _____.
A. find out nursing is essential to a child’s language development
B. to confirm that good mothering ensures the survival of a child
C. to find out what a child would speak if raised in a no-human speech context
D. to confirm that many children would not grow up without learning to speak
64. If a child starts to speak later than others, _____.
A. he will certainly be stupid in adult years
B. he will not necessarily be less intelligent
C. his language development will be limited to babbling
D. he will be insensitive to verbal signals
65. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A. Efficient nursing contributes to a child’s speech ability.
B. A child may never learn to speak if the sensitive periods are neglected.
C. Like a child, a monkeys’ brain can connect the sight and feel of an object.
D. A child can choose words and phrases that interest him and make new sentences
66. According to the passage, the writer seems to agree that _____.
A. when it comes to language, a child’s brain is highly selective
B. nonverbal signals affect a child’s language development as much as verbal ones
C. A child has his language ability developed randomly and irregardless of age as well
D. A mother’s brain is programmed to instruct language efficiently

根据题干中的关键词Frederick I可以定位与该题相关的文中信息在第一段最后一“it may be hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent.(他可能希望发现如果一个孩子没有听到母语,他会说什么语言,他告诉护士保持沉默。)”。 C“To find out what a child would speak if raised in a no-human speech context.(找出一个孩子在没有人说话的环境中长大会说什么)”的信息一致。
根据第四段中的“Experts suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ.(专家建议,言语阶段是以固定的顺序和恒定的年龄实现的,但在某些情况下,言语开始得很晚的孩子最终被证明却是高智商的。)”可知,语言发育滞后的孩子不一定就是智商低的,与选项B中的“he will not necessarily be less intelligent.(他不一定不那么聪明)”信息一致。
A项“Efficient nursing contributes to a child’s speech ability.(有效的护理有助于孩子的言语能力)。”文中未涉及;B项“A child may never learn to speak if the sensitive periods are neglected.(如果忽视敏感时期,孩子可能永远无法学会说话。)”与文中第三段“If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again.(如果忽略了这些敏感时期,那么获得技能的理想时间就会过去,他们可能再也不会那么容易学习了。)”表述的信息有偏差;根据第五段中的“What is special about man’s brain, compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of, say, a toy-bear with the sound pattern “toy bear”.(与猴子相比,人类大脑的特别之处在于复杂的系统,它使孩子能够将玩具熊的视觉和感觉与声音模式“玩具熊”联系起来。)”可知C项错误;根据第五段最后一句“And even more incredible is the young brain’s ability to pick out an order in language from the mixture of sound around him, to analyse, to combine and recombine the parts of a language in new ways.(更令人难以置信的是,年轻的大脑能够从他周围的声音混合物中挑选出语言的顺序,以新的方式分析、组合和重新组合语言的各个部分。)”可知,与D项“A child can choose words and phrases that interest him and make new sentences (孩子可以选择他感兴趣的单词和短语并制作新句子)”表述的信息一致。
根据第五段最后一句“And even more incredible is the young brain’s ability to pick out an order in language from the mixture of sound around him, to analyse, to combine and recombine the parts of a language in new ways.(更令人难以置信的是,年轻的大脑能够从他周围的声音混合物中挑选出语言的顺序,以新的方式分析、组合和重新组合语言的各个部分。)”以及尾段最后一句“Sensitivity to the child’s nonverbal signals is essential to the growth and development of language.(对孩子的非语言信号的敏感性对语言的成长和发展至关重要。)” 故选A项

Is Education A Robbery
One of our expectations about education is that it will pay off in terms of upward mobility. However, since the 1970s, high-school graduates have experienced a striking decrease in earnings, making them the first generation since World War Two to face a lower standard of living than their parents had.
Experts have argued that this imbalance between education and economy is at the heart of the problem of public education today. It is not, as business leaders claim, that the schools are turning out young people inadequately prepared to function in the workplace. ____67____.
College graduates also are having difficulty finding jobs. Even when they do, the jobs may not go with their training and expectations. Part of the problem is that too many young Americans aspire to have professional jobs, making disappointment and frustration inevitable for some. Many students assumed that what was true of an individual—that the higher the education, the better the job opportunities—would also be true for an entire society. But when the numbers of better-educated young people became too great, the economy could no longer absorb them.
____68____. That assumption is another part of the problem. In fact, employers do not routinely reward educational attainment; rather, they reward it only when they believe it will contribute to the employee’s productivity.
We should not overlook the fact that there is still a strong connection between education, occupation, and income. ____69____. But the payoff is neither as large nor as certain as it once was.
Unfortunately, Americans have focused so strongly on the economic payoff that many consider their college education useless if it does not yield a desirable, well-paying job. ____70____. We could argue that all or at least the majority of Americans would profit by some degree because higher education can enable the individual to think more deeply, explore more widely, and enjoy a greater range of experiences.
A. College graduates have a strong advantage over those with less education. B. Greater educational attainment guarantees career advancement. C. They will have no alternative but to settle for lower-paying jobs. D. The real problem is a lack of economic opportunities for students not continuing on to college. E. Income balance is just too romantic to be realistic between young people. F. Only in this sense can we speak of an “oversupply” of college graduates.

根据上文“Experts have argued that this imbalance between education and economy is at the heart of the problem of public education today. It is not, as business leaders claim, that the schools are turning out young people inadequately prepared to function in the workplace. (专家们认为,这种教育和经济之间的不平衡是当今公共教育问题的核心。这并不像商界领袖所声称的那样,是学校培养出的年轻人没有为在职场中发挥作用做好充分准备)”可知,当今公共教育问题的核心是教育和经济之间的不平衡,这个现象不是因为学校培养出的年轻人没有为在职场中发挥作用做好充分准备。由此推知,空处陈述这种现象的真正原因。D项“The real problem is a lack of economic opportunities for students not continuing on to college. (真正的问题是没有继续上大学的学生缺乏经济机会)”符合文意。故选D项。
【68题详解】
根据下文“That assumption is another part of the problem. In fact, employers do not routinely reward educational attainment; rather, they reward it only when they believe it will contribute to the employee’s productivity.
上文“We should not overlook the fact that there is still a strong connection between education, occupation, and income. 【70题详解】
上文“Unfortunately, Americans have focused so strongly on the economic payoff that many consider their college education useless if it does not yield a desirable, well-paying job. (不幸的是,美国人过于关注经济回报,以至于许多人认为,如果大学教育不能给他们带来一份理想的、高薪的工作,他们的大学教育就毫无用处) ,F项“Only in this sense can we speak of an ‘oversupply’ of college graduates. (只有在这个意义上,我们才能说大学毕业生‘供过于求’)”中的in this sense指代的上文中提到的情况,上下文为顺接关系,语意一致,衔接连贯。故选F项。
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Nowadays, leaders the world over are busy mapping out blueprints for a new age with environmental protection high on their agenda. Sustainable development hits headlines almost every day. It is of utmost importance to restore the harmonious balance between man and nature, given the damage we’ve already done to it.
First of all, we must realize that man and nature are interactive. To begin with, we derive everything from nature. Among other things, I’m sure you’ve all tasted natural produce that is otherwise known as green food. And you must have noticed that nearly all beautifying products boast of being natural creams, natural lotions or natural gels. For man, nature has an irresistible appeal.
But on the other hand we must also realize that nature can be unruly. Nature is indeed like a riddle, some areas of which are beyond the reach of science and technology, at least in the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, the advancement of science and technology will still characterize the next millennium. The coming new age will provide many opportunities, but it will be likewise run of challenges. For instance, United Nations’ demographers predict that global population could soar from its current 5.9 billion to as many as 11.2 billion by 2050. This will worsen the current scarcity of natural resources caused by environmental degradation. More conflicts over this scarcity may occur with the ghost of nuclear wars always hiding in the background. To prevent this nightmare from coming true, governments need to work closely with each other and back up their verbal commitment by actions. However, it is not enough only to ask what governments can do to achieve the harmony between man and nature. We must ask ourselves what we as individuals can do.
Can we all be economical with food, water, electricity or other resources Can we, or rather, some greedy ones among us, stop making rare plants and animals into delicious dishes Can we stop using the unrecyclable style of lunch boxes If not, one day they may bury us in an ocean of white rubbish. After all, the earth is not a dustbin; it’s our common home.
71.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A possible version
To achieve harmony between man and nature, people must be aware that although they are interactive, nature is not always at man’s mercy. Science and technology will be advancing, but population explosion will result in worsening environment. To maintain sustainable development, both governments and individuals should fulfill their promise of protecting the earth—our common home.

As for how to efficiently read English coaching papers, some teachers suggest that, when meeting with new vocabulary, students should rely on the context to guess out the meaning rather than consult the dictionary for each and every new word, while others hold that students should turn to dictionaries and put down the new words and expressions in their notebooks. Personally, I prefer the second one.
As far as I know, building up vocabulary is a never-ending task for the learner, and it’s especially the case with a foreign language acquisition. I don’t have an adequate command of its vocabulary to express myself, and neither do I grow up familiar with the specific foreign culture. So never will I do a satisfactory meaning guessing. I believe that an ever increasing vocabulary may be the one and only way to drag myself out of the dilemma.

People living in urban areas in the UK are encouraged to keep bees in their gardens or on roofs. This suggestion was put forward by Natural England, an environmental organization. It wants to stop the bee populations from dropping. Natural England suggests that more people who live in urban areas should set up beehives and grow insect friendly plants
Nearly all the UK’s 250 kinds of bees are in decline.Experts say keeping the bee populations is very important for plants and crops because bees do them a lot of good. Honey itself is also thought to be worth between f 10 m and f 30 m to the UK economy.
The first of the newly designed urban beehives is going to be set up on the roof of Natural Langland’s central London office.
Natural England suggests people think carefully about the things they need to to to keep bees. It also encourage people to seek professional advice before making a decision.

A four year-old girl was shot in the head by her father yesterday, apparently as he quarreled with her mother over rights to see the child.
As the girl fell to the ground with fatal brain injuries, the men opened fire on her mother, from whom he had recently separated, leaving her critically injured. The child was still alive when emergency workers reached her, but died in their arm as they tied desperately to keep her breathing. The girt’s mother was last night critically ill and fighting for life after being taken by helicopter to St George’s Hospital for emergency brain surgery. Close to where the girl lay was the body of her father, a builder, who had also shot himself in the head.
Police were called to the scene by neighbors who heard the shooting around 10 a. m. yesterday. Detective Inspector Darren Rawlings said that at this stage the evidence would suggest that it was a domestic incident and police are not seeking anyone else at the moment.
