A new Chinese snooker (斯洛克台球) star is on the rise. At age of 20, Yan Bingtao, defeated four-time world champion John Higgins to win the Snooker Master title on Jan 17. This made him the youngest Masters champion since Ronnie O’Sullivan won the title at the age of 19 in 1995.
It was Yan’s first appearance in such a major event. But he managed to defeat famous players Neil Robertson, Stephen Maguire and Stuart Bingham, making his victory all the more impressive. Yan’s coolness under pressure made experts believe that he is sure to be great. He kept calm under extreme pressure.
A native of Zibo, Shandong province, Yan took up billiards (桌球) at age 7, soon moving onto snooker. In 2009, his father quit his job to take him to Beijing for professional training. His mother later got cancer, stayed behind to earn money for the family.
In 2016, Yan went to the United Kingdom to start his professional career. There, he trained seven hours a day. “It is a boring process. For example, he needed to practice a ball routine (路线) for thousands of time each day.”
As Yan became a hit, people would make a comparison between Yan and another well-known player, Ding Junhui. Yan said “Ding is a legend for China. It would be so hard for anyone to achieve more than he did for the modern young players. All I can do is to be the best Yan Bingtao. ”

E-cigarettes are increasingly being used as a nicotine (尼古丁) alternative (替代品) as smokers look for ways to kick their habit — and then stay off cigarettes for good. E-cigarettes work by heating a pure liquid called e-juice — made up of flavorings, propylene glycol, glycerin and often nicotine — until it changes into gas.
The use of vaping (电子烟) for tobacco stopping became especially popular in the UK after a study found that e-cigarettes helped 50,000 to 70,000 smokers in England give up smoking in 2017.
It is said that vaping cleared the 7,000 or more chemicals found in a burning cigarette and its smoke, many of which are harmful, according to Johns Hopkins medicine.
But their use has become controversial (有争议的) in the US and other countries because of warnings about possible long-term health effects, possibly from ingredients besides nicotine in the vape juice or cartridge. The US Surgeon General says vapes can contain “ultrafine substances that can be taken deep into the lungs, flavorants such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to serious lung disease, volatile organic compounds and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead.”
What's more, countless studies found teen use is a direct gateway to traditional cigarette smoking at a time when teenager use of e-cigarettes was increasing.
A 2019 outbreak of a mysterious vaping-related lung disease among American youth has triggered alarm as well. As of February 2020, the condition had killed at least 68 people and sickened more than 2,807, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
One 18-year-old American who vaped for over a year ended up in the hospital with “lungs like a 70-year-old.”
The condition, now known as EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury), is strongly linked to e-cigarettes containing vitamin E acetate, a sticky oil substance that can cling to lung tissue.
28.What can we learn about e-cigarettes from the first two paragraphs
A.They consist of gases. B.They contain no nicotine.
C.They take the place of cigarettes. D.They were accepted in Britain.
29.What does the US Surgeon General want to tell us about e-cigarettes
A.They contain healthy substances. B.They are harmful to people’s health.
C.They can help people stop smoking. D.They are better than traditional cigarettes.
30.What can be inferred about American teenagers
A.E-cigarettes hurt their lungs badly. B.They find a way to anti-smoking.
C.E-cigarettes make them look older. D.The US Center stops them smoking.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.Harmful E-cigarettes B.Smoking or Non-Smoking
C.The Popularity of E-cigarettes in the UK D.Use of E-cigarettes as Anti-smoking Assistance
D
I love winter birds and I love photographing them in snow. That being said, I admit that I'm a fair-weather birder(猎鸟者).Worse, I'm a lazy, fair-weather birder. I don't like weather extremes, so when it's very hot or really cold, it is hard to get me to leave the comfort of home. In summer, I only photograph hummingbirds(蜂鸟)in my yard, and in winter, I try to only go out on relatively mild days. Most of my bird photography is done within an hour's drive of my hometown of Elmira, Ont. So it's all about finding a balance that works.
The winter of 2014 was a great year for snowy owls(雪枭)here in Woolwich Township. One day in early March, I was on my way home from work when I noticed a beautiful snowy owl sitting in a tree right at the crossing. I pulled over to admire him, and then kept heading home unwillingly.
Two hundred meters or so down the road, there were two more snowy owls in a field by a fence, and in the next field over, another on top of a fence post. I couldn't find words to express my feeling at that moment. Thus I rushed home, grabbed my camera and went right back out to get some pictures. It was one of the most magical local birding moments I've ever experienced.
When I'm looking for excellent opportunities to photograph snowy owls and other birds without spending dozens of hours searching for them-and if I'm lucky, finding one that's semi-cooperative-I head to the Canadian Raptor Conservancy (CRC) or the Mountsberg Raptor Centre. I've attended so many photo sessions at each of these fantastic facilities that I've lost count.
32.What factor has the most effect on whether the author goes out to photograph birds or not
A.Road conditions. B.Personal emotion.
C.Weather conditions. D.Time arrangement.
33.How did the author feel when he saw the snowy owls on the way home
A.Sad. B.Excited.
C.Untouched. D.Proud.
34.What does the underlined word "them" in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.Opportunities. B.Moments.
C.Pictures. D.Birds.
35.What can we infer about the author
A.The author only photographs snowy owls. B.The author can take excellent photos easily.
C.The author makes a living by photographing birds. D.The author values each chance to photograph birds.

Eric threw himself on the sofa, sighing. Mother's Day was approaching, but he didn't have a present. “ How can I buy a present without any money ” he thought.
Eric picked up the newspaper that was lying on the couch. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring a contest. “ Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree for her, ” said the advertisement.
“This is perfect!” thought Eric. He ran to his room with the newspaper. Taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters. And she gives me the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom.”
Eric liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his bed. He ran to the mailbox with his entry. “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.
Eric checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days went by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother's Day. Eric still hadn't heard anything about the contest.
“ What am I going to do now ” he wondered. He didn't have a present, and he didn't have a shopping spree. And he still didn't have money.
He had to think of something. Eric closed his eyes and curled his toes and thought hard.

Dear Jack,
I am more than happy to know you want to learn Chinese. Although you can’t visit China due to the pandemic, don’t worry. I’d like to offer you some practical suggestions.
First of all, as proper guidance can help you learn more easily, it’s a good idea to learn Chinese either from a Chinese teacher or from teaching videos on the Internet. Furthermore, I strongly suggest you listen to and speak Chinese with native Chinese speakers online. Of course, I will be always available if you want to practice Chinese.
I hope my advice will be of some help to you and you will make progress in time.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.Para 1:
Suddenly he had an idea. He fumbled in his drawers and fortunately found a piece of delicate and fragrant paper. He sat down straight on his chair, and began to write a letter in his best handwriting as a Mother's Day present. “Dear mom, I'm writing this to tell you that you are the best mother in the world…” With a sincere heart, Eric finished the letter and sealed it in an envelope, his lips curving into a smile.
Para 2:
The next morning Eric handed his letter to his mom. Finishing reading the letter, his mom swept him into her arms with her eyes wet as if she wanted to squeeze the breath out of him. “Thank you, my dear!” She sniffed, hugging Eric more tightly. Leaning against his mother’s shoulder, Eric slowly explained why he chose to write a letter as a gift. After hearing the reason, his mom gently touched his head, saying, “To me, your letter is better than a thousand shopping sprees.” Hugging each other, they felt blissful as if they were in possession of everything. Indeed, love should be made known to loved ones.
