The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day in elementary school. Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports enthusiast, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field Day, which focused on individual skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing e fall, our backyard football games began with passing practice.
Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games, accelerating my competitive fever. However, in girls’ sports games at my school, I was no star. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team. School sports did not bleed into the weekends, as they do today, but at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. During break time, magazines were also quite popular for us teens. These regularly featured articles on physical exercise. Somehow, my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare funds to use to join a gym.
So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation evolved in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered essential even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I’m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.

Nearly two years after the COVID-19 outbreak, China has granted approval to its first antibody combination treatment for COVID-19.
A team from Brii Biosciences, Tsinghua University, and the People’s Hospital of Shenzhen has accomplished the task in 20 months. It would usually takes 10 years. “It can reduce the rate of hospitalization and death by 80 percent,” said Zhang Linqi, leader of the research team.
The new antibody drug is immediately effective when conducted intravenously (静脉注射). Moreover, the treatment can protect people, especially those whose physical condition doesn’t allow vaccination, from becoming infected by COVID-19 for around nine to 12 months, said Zhang. How does it work When a virus infects a cell, it relies on an important type of protein: the spike proteins on its surface. The spike proteins serve as a key to unlocking a cell. If a virus cannot enter a cell, it will be destroyed immediately. The job of our antibodies is to block the virus from entering cells. So its target is very precise. In addition, thanks to the coordination between the two antibodies, it is highly efficient and durable in controlling the virus, according to Zhang.
Lab tests suggest that the antibody combination can be effective against common COVID-19 variants, including the Alpha, Beta, Delta, Lambda and Mu. Testing with the newer Omicron strain is ongoing. The qualities of the new drug make it especially useful for high-risk groups, such as frontline medical workers and people who are not suitable for vaccination due to various possible health problems.
The new drug is expected to come to the market soon, but it’s not cheap. That’s because of limited production. Also, it typically must be administered intravenously in a hospital setting.
Noting that China has used science and technology to fight COVID-19 since the beginning of the outbreak, Zhang said: “Science is the core to solving the issue. Science has shown its power in all sectors, from medical treatment, medicine and vaccine development to prevention and control measures.”
28.What do we know about the new drug

B.By preventing the virus from attacking cells.
C.By assisting the spike proteins in unlocking cells.
D.By targeting spike proteins on the surface of cells.
30.What is a disadvantage of the drug
A.It has some side effects. B.Its ingredients are still in limited supply.
C.Not everyone can afford it. D.Only high-risk groups can have access to it.
31.What is the Zhang Linqi’s attitude towards science and technology in fighting COVID-19

Climate change has been a long-standing issue that continuously drives scientists to find green, sustainable fuels. The universe’s most abundant element, hydrogen (氢), has drawn their attention and is now on its way to becoming the future of green fuel.
More than $150 billion worth of green hydrogen projects were announced globally in 2020, according to Reuters. Airbus, a European multinational aerospace corporation, has taken the lead in the new sustainable fuel industry. It has designed self-contained hydrogen fuel cell pods that can be attached to the underside of airplane wings, promoting the use of hydrogen fuel for long-distance flights, which aim to achieve zero emissions. The company plans to launch hydrogen-powered aircraft in 2035, according to Daily Mail.
Compared to fossil fuels, hydrogen is a much more eco-friendly fuel. When hydrogen burns, the only by-product is water. However, the traditional way to get hydrogen from natural gas or coal generates considerable carbon emissions. The greenest way is to obtain hydrogen from water using electrolysis (电解) powered by renewable energy, although this process requires so much electricity that it is quite expensive. The key to making hydrogen competitive with fossil fuels is to lower the production cost to under $1.50. This would require lowering around 50 percent of renewable power costs and 75 percent of electrolyzer costs, according to Australia’s renewable energy agency.
Also, shipping liquid hydrogen is challenging, given that needs to be chilled to -253℃ to do so. Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries is set to complete the construction of the world’s first liquefied hydrogen carrier by early 2021. According to Reuters, most of the world’s big hydrogen export projects are looking to ship hydrogen in the form of liquid ammonia (氨), which can be changed to hydrogen and needs to be chilled to only -33 C.
With more and more countries aiming to cut down carbon emissions to solve the issue of global warming, green hydrogen will help decarbonizing industries that can’t be electrified hit the targets.
“We could use these circumstances, where loads of public money are going to be needed into the energy system, to jump forward towards a hydrogen economy,” said Diederik Samsom, who heads the European Commission’s climate cabinet.
32.What is the strength of the hydrogen fuel
A.It works very efficiently. B.It is convenient to store.
C.It is environmentally friendly. D.It produces no by-product.
33.What is the challenge when shipping liquid hydrogen
A.The expensive cost of shipping. B.The required temperature.
C.The construction of liquefied carriers. D.Changing it to the form of liquid ammonia.
34.In which industries does green hydrogen benefit for
A.Those powered by fossil fuels. B.Those generating electricity.
C.Those funded by public money. D.Those making hydrogen.
35.What is the most suitable title for the passage
A.Fueling a Green Future B.Living a Green Life.
C.Shipping Liquid Hydrogen D.Making Hydrogen Competitive

With the development of apps, social media has seemingly revolutionized the way we travel. Now, young people primary travel inspiration comes from social media. Instead of choosing their destination from a selection in a catalogue at travel agent like before, they scroll(滚动) through online posts in search of that ideal location.
When it comes to planning the perfect holiday, social media has become a huge factor for many young people today. Everybody wants to return home with an album full of artistic and “instagramable” photos that show off their trips. The best way to find that desired “post-able” holiday destination is now through social media itself. Whether it is viewing a friend’s recent travel post, or a photo directly from a travel account, social media inspires the desire to explore new places for so many of its users.
Travel companies now also use social media as part of their own marketing strategies. The majority of airlines, tour companies, hotels and other travel-related businesses have their own Instagram, Face book and Twitter pages to increase brand awareness. One of the leading marketing strategies is the use of the social influenced. Research shows that 70% of teens trust influences more than traditional celebrities --- in 2018, 1.6 billion were funnelled into sponsored influenced posts on Instagram alone; and 63 % of 18-24- year-old Instagram users follow travel influenced account.
However, as with many aspects of social media, there were obvious disadvantaged to this travel revolution. It could be argued that the obsession with documenting and sharing your travel adventures online distracts from being present and truly enjoying the experience. Our motives to travel seem to have shifted away from a strong desire to travel and have become more ego centric(自我为中心的), travelling now for the sake of likes and follows. This draws away from some of the most important elements of travel.
In general, social media has revolutionized the way we travel, providing tonnes of inspiration and new opportunities. We should be grateful for the global awareness it has given us, and the insight into new places and different means of travel. At the same time, it is equally important not to allow the posts we see to affect our self-image or reflect on our own experiences any differently.

Most people don't think much about the food scraps they throw away; however, researchers in Tokyo have developed a new method to reduce food waste by recycling discarded fruit and vegetable scraps into robust construction materials.
Worldwide industrial and household food waste amounts to hundreds of billions of pounds per year, a large proportion of which comprises edible(可食用的) scraps, like fruit and vegetable peels. This unsustainable practice is both costly and environmentally unfriendly, so researchers have been searching for new ways to recycle these organic materials into useful products.
“Our goal was to use seaweed and common food scraps to construct i materials that were at least as strong as concrete,” explains Yuya Sakai, the senior author of the study. “But since we were using edible food waste, we were also interested in determining whether the recycling process impacted the flavor of the original materials.”
The researchers borrowed a “heat pressing” concept that is typically used to make construction materials from wood powder, except they used vacuum-dried, pulverized food scraps, such as seaweed, cabbage leaves, and orange, onion, pumpkin, and banana peels as the construction powders. The processing technique involved mixing the food powder with water and seasonings, and then pressing the mixture into a mold at high temperature. The researchers tested the bending strength of the resulting materials and monitored their taste, smell and appearance.
“With the exception of the specimen obtained from pumpkin, all of the materials exceeded our bending strength target,” says Kota Machida, a senior collaborator. “We also found that Chinese cabbage leaves, which produced a i material over three times stronger than concrete, could be mixed with the weaker pumpkin-based material to provide effective rein for cement.”
The new, robust materials kept their edible nature, and the addition of salt or sugar improved their taste without reducing their strength. Furthermore, the durable products resisted rot, fungi, and insects, and experienced no appreciable changes in appearance or taste after exposure to air for four months.
Given that food waste is a global financial burden and environmental concern, it is crucial to develop methods for recycling food scraps. Using these substance to prepare materials that are stronger enough for construction projects, but also maintain their edible nature and taste, opens the door to a wide range of creative applications.
12.Why do the researchers search for new ways to recycle organic materials
A.Because the construction of robust material needs much food waste.
B.Because food waste is both costly and environmentally unfriendly.
C.Because they want to make a fortune by recycling the food waste.
D.Because the amount of food waste is too large to store at the moment.

A.Contains. B.Processes. C.Presses. D.originate.
14.Which of the following is right according to the text
A.All the materials obtained from food waste surpass researchers ' strength target.
B.The material produced from Chinese cabbage leaves is two times stronger than concrete.
C.There is a lot of room for creative use of this technology.
D.The new materials are strong enough for construction projects, but fail to maintain their original taste.
15.Where is the text probably from

Stepping Up to the Plate
When ten-year-old Reese lost her Fresno County. California, home to one of the largest wildfires in state history early last fall, she had a very pressing concern: Did anyone take her baseball cards
No one did. With a houseful of kids and dogs and a farm's worth of horses to remove, the family forgot the cards under the stress. Naturally, the diehard San Francisco Giants fan and Little League lefty with a swing as smooth as butter was upset. When she watched the Giants on TV, she would lay out each player's card on the floor in their corresponding field positions. "I like baseball cards because they are pictures of people doing happy things-doing what they love, and what I love/' said Reese.
Reese's loss touched the hearts of the Fresno County fire department, which posted her story on its Facebook page with a request to help Reese refill her baseball card collection. That, in turn, touched the heart of Kevin Ashford.
Ashford knew exactly where Reese could find replacement cards: in his garage. He had more than 25.000 cards in his collection with a total value of $35.000. Ashford had been thinking about selling them when he saw the fire department's post. *'l wasn't really doing anything with them." said Ashford thought I could take care of this problem rather quickly/'
Firefighters transported the cards from Ashford's garage to theirs and then surprised Reese during a tour of the firehouse. Towers of Ashford's cards were piled in front of the fire engine. After thanking Ashford, Reese, ever the team player, was quick to share the thousands of baseball cards she received from Ashford and donors around the country with other kids affected by California's Fire. She's gotten so many, in fact, that she set up Gifts from Reese, an organization that collects cards and donates them to those in need.

A decade ago, many Japanese were so embarrassed to be seen eating alone in the school or office cafeteria that they'd choose to eat in a single bathroom. Appearing friendless was a no-no, leading to a phenomenon — taking a “toilet lunch”
“Japan is changing in a big way,” says Miki Tateishi who serves drinks at Bar Hitori (hitori means “one person”) in Tokyo designed for certain drinkers. The bar, which opened in mid-2018, represents an unusual opportunity to go out and drink by oneself in conformity (遵从)-driven Japan And it's doing well: Instead of hiding in toilets, people are stepping out and accepting their being seen alone.
Yet Bar Hitori is by no means the only example of how businesses arc changing to accommodate people who want to do things by themselves. From dining to nightlife to travel, new options catering specifically to individuals have appeared in recent years. It’s known as the ohitorisama movement: People bravely choose to do things alone regardless of others’ opinions. But in a country where being pan of the group has always been highly-prized, it is a big deal. However, negative social pressures around being alone have reduced. “These social pressures you have to get married, or you have to have a child are decreasing,” says Matsushita. a senior consultant Japan’s largest economic research firm.
And it's not the decrease in population but the appearance of more flexible attitudes about how lives can be lived that has helped ohitorisama to boom. “It’s only 10 years ago they said ‘lunch in a toilet’,” says Matsushita. “But, after 10 years, we have so many services for people alone. People tend to think positively about being alone.”
8.What do customers most probably do at Bar Hitori
A.Chat with their friends. B.Take a “toilet lunch”.
C.Volunteer to serve drinks. D.Have drinks alone.
9.What can be inferred in Japan according to Matsushita
A.“Lunch in a toilet” isn't accepted.
B.Being alone is supported at present.
C.Young people approve of early marriage.
D.Services for people alone should be improved.
10.Why has ohitorisama developed
A.Tolerant attitudes appear. B.The economy grows.
C.The population reduces. D.Social pressures increase.
11.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Rise of Japan’s “toilet lunch” B.The dilemma of young Japanese
C.Japan’s culture of being alone D.A booming new business in Japan
Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center mapped brain changes after a year of aerobic workouts and uncovered a potentially significant process: Exercise increases blood flow into two key areas of the brain associated with memory.
The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, showed this blood flow can help even older people with memory issues improve cognition, a finding that could guide future Alzheimer's disease research, according to UT Southwestern Medical Center.
In the study, researchers followed 30 participants who were 60 or older and had memory problems. Half experienced a year of aerobic exercise while the other half did stretches. “We've shown that even when your memory starts to fade, you can still do something about it by adding aerobic exercise to your lifestyle," said Binu Thomas, a senior research scientist of UT Southwestern Medical Center who led the study. "The aerobic exercise group showed a 47% improvement in some memory scores after a year; the other group showed slight change. Brain imaging of the aerobic exercise group, taken while at rest at the beginning and end of the study, showed increased blood flew into the specific brain areas that played important roles in memory function."
Many teams across the world are trying to determine if aerobic exercise might fight memory loss. Evidence is growing that it could at least play a small role in delaying or reducing the risk of Alzheimer's disease. For example, a 2018 study showed that people with lower fitness levels experienced faster retrogression of vital nerve fibers in the brain called white matter related to memory.
“Blood flow in the brain connected with memory improvement is still a part of the puzzle, and we need to continue piecing it together," Thomas says. "But we've seen enough date to know that starting a fitness program can have lifelong benefits for our brains as well as our hearts."
12.What is the study mainly about
A.Old people have memory issues. B.Exercise improves memory.
C.Aerobic workouts benefit mental health. D.Alzheimer's disease can be cured.
13.What happened to participants after one-year aerobic exercise
A.Earlier memories were refreshed. B.Memory scores showed very small change.
C.Brain imaging remained the same. D.More blood flew into memory-related areas.
14.What does the underlined word “retrogression“ mean in the fourth paragraph
A.Growth. B.Recovery. C.Decline. D.Extension.
15.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Further research work requires doing. B.More people experience memory loss.

The 2021 Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to the novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah, for his “compassionate insight of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee”.
Gurah is a Tanzanian writer who writes in English and lives and works in the United Kingdom. He was born in Zanzibar, the semi-autonomous island off the east African coast. Zanzibar underwent a revolution in 1964 in which citizens of Arab origin were persecuted. Gurnah was forced to flee the country when he was 18. He is one of the most important contemporary postcolonial novelists writing in Britain today and is the first black African writer to win the prize since Wole Soyinka in 1986. Gurnah is also the first Tanzanian writer to win.
Anders Olsson, chair of the Nobel committee, said that Gurnah’s novels abandon conventional descriptions and turn our eyes to a culturally diverse East Africa unfamiliar to many in other parts of the world.
Gurnah, who was in the kitchen when he was informed of his win, said that he believed it was a wind-up.
“I thought it was a prank,” he said. “These things are usually floated for weeks in advance, or sometimes months beforehand, about who are the winners, so it was not something that was in my mind at all. I was just thinking, I wonder who’ll get it ”
“I am honored to be awarded this prize and to join the writers who have been superior to me on this list. It is overwhelming and I am so proud.”

How much free time do you need to be happier?Feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list can certainly make you unhappy, but new research suggests that more free time might not be the magic elixir(灵丹妙药) like many of us have dreamed.
Researchers found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective well-being(幸福) -but only up to a point. People who had up to two hours of free time a day generally reported they felt better than those who had less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse. “While too little time is bad, having more time is not always better,” said Marissa Sharif, an assistant professor of marketing at The Wharton School. For example, some adults struggle with the “retirement blues”, which can be due to a lack of stimulation and structure, among other things. They conducted several smaller online experiments. In one they asked participants to imagine having 3.5 to 7 free hours per day. They were asked to imagine spending that time doing “productive” things(like exercising) or to imagine doing “unproductive” activities (like watching TV).
Study participants believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day-but only if they used it unproductively. “In other words, how people use their free time matters,” Sharif said. “Of course, what feels ‘productive’ is up to you. Free-time activities like knitting, reading, cooking or gaming are also known to put people in a state of flow. In cases when people do find themselves with excessive(过多的)amounts of spare time, such as retirement or having left a job,” Sharif said, “our results suggest these individuals would benefit from spending their newfound time with purpose.”
8.What is the finding of the new study
A.Adults tend to feel happy in their free time.
B.Being too busy threatens people’s physical health.
C.More free time does not definitely mean more happiness.
D.More and more people have little spare time.

A.To emphasize the significance of spending free time.
B.To indicate the reasons for adults’ being upset.
C.To forecast the retirement life in the future.
D.To prove the discovery of the new research
10.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The requirements of the experiment
B.The significance of the experiment.
C.The consequence of the experiment.
D.The purpose of the experiment.
11.What can we infer from Sharif’s words in the last paragraph
A.Taking good advantage of free time will help bring people happiness.
B.Attending too many activities may damage people’s health.
C.Spending spare time with friends often benefits people a lot.
D.Having little free time may result in anxiety.
Set to launch on October 16, the Lucy spacecraft is designed to study Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids. These asteroids are small bodies left over from the formation of our solar system’s large planets. They share an orbit with Jupiter as the planet goes around the sun The mission’s aim is to gather new information about the solar system’s formation 4.5 billion years ago.
Lucy will observe eight asteroids over 12 years. One of the eight asteroids orbits in what is known as the Asteroid Belt, an area between Mars and Jupiter. Most known asteroids orbit within this area. The spacecraft will also observe seven Trojan asteroids. Scientists consider the Trojan asteroids to be the ancient remains of the formation of the solar system. They have stayed captured in Jupiter’s orbit for billions of years. The Trojans orbit the sun in two groups—one that’s ahead of Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, and a second one that lags behind it. Lucy will be the first spacecraft designed to visit and observe these asteroids.
The spacecraft was named Lucy after the ancient fossil discovered in Ethiopia in 1974. Lucy was one of the most famous scientific finds of the 20th century. The collection of skeletal bones gave scientists a better understanding of the evolution of humans. Cathy Olkin, the deputy lead investigator for the Lucy mission, compared the NASA spacecraft to the Lucy fossil. “Just like the Lucy fossil transformed our understanding of human evolution, the Lucy mission will transform our understanding of solar system evolution,” she said.
The spacecraft is equipped with several imaging instruments designed to capture information about the composition of materials on the surface of asteroids. Other equipment will be used to record asteroid surface temperatures and measure the size of the objects the spacecraft observes. Lucy will depend on solar power to operate. NASA says the mission expects to set a record because Lucy will travel farther from the sun than any past solar powered spacecraft.
Lori Glaze, the director of NASA’s planetary science division, said, “Whatever Lucy finds will give us vital clues about the formation of our solar system.”
12.What is the mission of the Lucy spacecraft
A.To collect soil samples from Jupiter. B.To explore the surface of Trojan asteroids.
C.To search for life on Mars. D.To find out the origin of solar system.
