一、阅读理解
Every year, the staff of Popular Science barricades itself in a room to fight. No, this is not some nerdy (书呆子;笨蛋) fight club; it's where we select our Innovation of the Year, the breakthrough that we agree is the most important from the previous 12 months. Below are some examples.
Smart AI Hand
Getting through daily life without the use of one's hand can be quite difficult. While prosthetic (假体的) hands have seen great progress over the years, a new smart prosthetic hand built by BrainRobotics is attractive. The hand is powered by an AI software that allows it to "learn" from its user. The hand is still being tested, but one tester is able to successfully play a song on the piano with the hand. The hand is expected to cost somewhere between $10,000 and $15,000, which is cheaper with the use of 3D printing. It allows each hand to be printed to fit the user.
LightSail 2
The fuel not only takes up space on the spacecraft, but also increases its weight, making it more expensive to launch. But a new type of spacecraft, the LightSail 2 satellite, could end this problem by using the thrust (推力) of photons (光子) bouncing off the spacecraft to sail through space. It takes advantage of the thrust and needs little to no fuel to move through space. LightSail 2 will return to Earth in one year.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold
Lenovo has introduced a laptop that can be folded up like a book. You can use it anytime and anywhere if you want to. It can also be held like a traditional laptop. It can be held flat, just as you would hold a tablet, or folded like a book when you're lying in bed. It has already been on the market.
Meal Delivery Robot
Food delivery workers have hard jobs. Can robots do the same job US company Postmates has designed a meal delivery robot called Serve. With two eyes and four wheels, it can drive down footways thanks to the cameras inside it. Still, a human driver can control it remotely if there are any problems. The company has begun testing the robot in some parts of San Francisco, the US.

3.What do the four inventions have in common
A.They are all powered by the sun.
B.They are too expensive for ordinary people.
C.They show the development of technology.
D.They will be on the market in the near future.
MySpace, the social networking website, is different from other websites which only provide stories about other people. MySpace is a place that allows you to broadcast your own stories and personal information to as many people as you like. Founded in 2003, it is a big source of information for and about American kids.
Teenagers and their parents feel very differently about it. Teens are rushing to join the site, not sharing their parents’ worries. It signals yet another generation gap in the digital era.
For teenagers, it is reliable network to keep in touch with their friends. They will often list their surnames, birthdays, after-school jobs, school clubs, hobbies and other personal information. “MySpace is an easy way to reach just about everyone. I don’t have all the phone numbers of my acquaintances. But if I want to get in touch with one of them, I could just leave them a message on MySpace,” said Abby Van Wassen. She is a 16-year-old student at Woodland Hills High of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Parents, on the other hand, are seriously concerned about the security problems of MySpace. “Every time we hold a parents meeting, the first question is always about MySpace,” said Kent Gates, who travels the country doing Internet safety seminars (研讨会). The National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children has received at least 288 MySpace-related complaints, according to Mary Beth Buchanan, a lawyer in Pittsburgh.
“Your profile on MySpace shows all your personal information to anyone on the Web. And MySpace even lists this information by birthplace and age. It’s like a free checklist for troublemakers and it endangers children,” Buchanan said.
4.From the passage, we can learn that MySpace _________.
A.is popular with parents
B.is very careful about people’s privacy
C.encourages you to list your personal information
D.lists the telephone numbers of your friends
5.What can we infer from the sentence “Every time we hold a parents meeting, the first question is always about MySpace”

A.Internet Safety B.The Digital Era
C.Generation Gap D.MySpace
Shaanxi kuaiban is a traditional Chinese form of storytelling in the Shaanxi dialect to the rhythm of bamboo clappers. It can be performed by a group or solo. The art form can be traced back to the late Qing Dynasty (1644—1911). At first, the art was used by farmers to share their knowledge and earn money. But now, more people perform Shaanxi kuaiban on different occasions—for example, at festival celebrations, parties and art shows.
Yang Jinlong, 45, is an experienced Shaanxi kuaiban artist. He first learned the art at the age of 9. Before that, he often went with his father, an amateur performer, to watch kuaiban performances.
“As a young boy, I was attracted to the art form because many of the stories are about heroes. The performer tells stories while playing kuaiban, and it's easy for the audience to remember the stories since all the lines rhyme,” Yang said.
He has practiced Shaanxi kuaiban for more than 30 years. Since 2003, he has been teaching the art form to young people. At 9 am on weekdays, he drives to primary and middle schools in Xi'an and teaches students about Shaanxi kuaiban until about 6 pm. Then, he returns home to prepare classes for the next day. On the weekends, he teaches for six hours each day at art education institutions in Xi'an.
Yang has made some adaptations to the art form to relate more to students. When he tells modern stories, Yang abandons the traditional gown and wears a suit. He also integrates many pop elements like tap dance, ballet, jazz dance and the rhythm of popular music into kuaiban performances. His stories focus on more trendy topics, like stories of heroes who have worked to alleviate poverty, as well as the Chinese Olympic team.
“Art education is important for students in China. Just as many students learn to play Western musical instruments like the piano and violin, there are many people learning traditional Chinese folk arts, including Shaanxi kuaiban. They are committed and passionate,” Yang said.
8.What do we know about Shaanxi kuaiban
A.It dates back to the late Ming Dynasty. B.People perform it in Shaanxi dialect.
C.It was originally used by teachers for teaching. D.It focuses on Chinese ancient literature.
9.Why was Yang Jinlong fascinated by Shaanxi kuaiban as a child
A.Because all the lines rhyme. B.Because he liked stories about heroes.
C.Because it was a way to earn money. D.Because he wanted to be like his father.
10.What did Yang Jinlong do to promote Shaanxi kuaiban
A.He wore local clothes of Shaanxi.
B.He told stories about superheroes.
C.He added pop elements to kuaiban performances.
D.He performed Shaanxi kuaiban in Western countries.
11.Which of the following best describes Yang Jinlong
A.Determined and creative. B.Patient and capable.
C.Talented and modest. D.Humorous and responsible.
It isn’t often that zookeepers call on craftspeople for help. But cold weather at the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center in northern India was putting elephants at risk. So the center’s staff joined forces with locals to find a creative way to keep the animals warm. Now the elephants are stepping out in style, thanks to volunteers who take advantage of their crafting talents to knit enormous sweaters to protect the animals.
Wildlife SOS is a conservation group that has been taking action against animal cruelty and saving wildlife in pain since 1995. Their Elephant Conservation and Care Center is dedicated to rescuing the gentle giants from abuse and exploitation in circuses, illegal hunting, and other circumstances where they have been neglected or treated with extreme cruelty. There are currently 20 elephants living at the center, and the staff hope to take in 50 more of the creatures this year.
Because most of the elephants housed at the center are recovering from injuries or are elderly and weak, they are particularly vulnerable to cold temperatures. When the staff reported near-freezing nighttime temperatures this winter, volunteers from surrounding villages began knitting enormous sweaters to keep the elephants warm. The sweaters are large enough to cover the elephants’ backs, bellies, and legs.
Making the sweaters is a big undertaking — each one takes approximately four weeks to create, with volunteers working together on the huge garments. Still, the volunteers make sure that the knits are not only warm and comfortable, but they are also colorful, and even fashionable. Centered on a common, compassionate goal, the project helps promote a sense of community in all who participate.
12.Why do people make sweaters for the elephants
A.To help the elephants keep warm.
B.To make the elephants step out in style.
C.To show off their outstanding knitting talents.
D.To dress the elephants up for performances.
13.How many elephants are expected to live at the center at the end of this year
A.20. B.30. C.60. D.70.
14.The underlined part in Para. 3 probably means ________.
A.getting used to B.able to deal with
C.easy to be harmed by D.connected with
15.What can we learn from the passage
A.Elephants are always treated well in India.
B.It takes great trouble to knit sweaters for elephants.
C.Volunteers are often called on to knit sweaters for elephants.
D.Wildlife SOS is an organization that knits sweaters for animals.

Basic First Aid Steps
First Aid for Cardiac Arrests (心搏停止)
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the most important medical step of all. When a person's heart suddenly stops beating, do as follows:
● Ask someone to call an ambulance.
● Immediately start chest press regardless of your training. Press hard and fast in the center of the chest. Hand this task over to those who are trained if and when they arrive.
● If you are trained, use chest press and rescue breathing.
First Aid for Nosebleeds
Most of us have had a bloody nose at some time in our lives. The first aid for a nosebleed includes:
● Bend the body forward, not back.
● Hold the nose between the fingers just below the bridge.
● Check after five minutes to see if bleeding has stopped. If not, continue holding and check after another 10 minutes.
First Aid for Burns
The first step in treating a bum is to stop the burning process. Chemicals need to be cleaned off. Electricity needs to be turned off Heat needs to be cooled down with running water. For serious bums, you might need to see a doctor.
First Aid for Frostbite
Treating frostbite is a subtle step of gradual wanning. If possible, this should be done by professionals. You need to get out of the cold first. Small areas of minor frostbite may be rewarmed by skin-to-skin contact, but avoid using any heat sources or hot packs.

My morning started out normally. Having hurried to complete chores, I raced out of the door for my mid-morning appointment.
By the time I finished my appointment, I was starving. I stopped at Moe’s Southwest Grill to order a pancake to take home and eat while working.
Since it was a little before noon, there was a line. A woman, who I soon learned was Marcella, was paying at the checkout counter. She asked the woman behind her in line if she would like a drink and then asked me. We both said no, and must have looked confused, because she said, “I got you.” She continued to pay for both of our meals even though we were strangers.
I asked Marcella why she did this, and she shared that someone once did something similar for her. The person asked that she pay it forward someday and she was making good on her promise.
Before I left, she gave me a warm hug and asked only that I do an act of kindness for a stranger when I could. I arrived home, but instead of working through lunch, I sat and reflected on her kindness.
It reminded me of two things: Firstly, focus on positive interactions instead of the negative ones. Secondly, if you’re able to perform a simple act of kindness, do it. Marcella didn’t need to pay for my lunch. But she did, and it brightened my day. She was kind — with no expectations of receiving anything in return.
As I have promised her, I plan on paying her kindness forward. Maybe, it make a small difference in someone’s life, and the ripple (涟漪)effect will continue, because that’s what being human is all about ——being kind ——even to a stranger.

A.Excited. B.Moved.
C.Puzzled. D.Guilty.
6.What did Marcella advise the author to do
A.To help those in poverty.
B.To reflect on her kindness.
C.To focus on positive things in life.
D.To hand kindness on to someone else.
7.What message does the author intend to convey
A.Live your life to the fullest.
B.Keep your promise to strangers.
C.Be grateful to whoever helps you.
D.Do something good even for strangers.
Did you ever notice how your favorite clothes lose their color and seem thinner with time Washing may be to blame.
According to a new study, clothes lose fewer dyes (染料)and fibers when washed in shorter cycles and in cool water. That means they will fade and thin less. These wash settings are greener, too— good for the environment.
As clothes are being washed in a washing machine, some of the fabric's fibers loosen and are washed away. Clothes also lose some of dyes that colored them and the dyes and fibers lost in the water will end up in the environment.
“There is some sort of environmental impact as to almost everything you do," says Lucy Cotton from the University of Leeds. Her research team put together two batches of clothes for tests. One had dark-colored T-shirts. The other had shirts in lighter colors. The team washed each batch in the same machine but used two different cycles. The first cycle lasted 30 minutes and used 25℃ water. The second cycle used 40℃ water and ran for 85 minutes.
After each cycle, the team collected fibers in the wash water and from an extra empty wash cycle afterward. They found that all shirts lost more color when washed in hot water in the longer cycle. Room-temperature water released fewer dyes than the hotter water did. The shirts also lost more tiny fibers in the longer, hotter cycle. Those microfibers matter because they give fabric its weight and strength. When the fabric loses too many microfibers, it will thin and weaken. Those microfibers will also pollute waterways.
And, just as microfibers add up to tons of waste, even small steps to cut waste will also add up. "Everything that you can do can make a difference," Cotton says, “even if it is something as simple as changing your wash settings."
8.What did the new study mainly indicate
A.The benefits of washing clothes.
B.The frequency of washing clothes.
C.The problems with washing clothes.
D.The influence of washing time and water temperature.
9.What can we learn about microfibers
A.They are useless at all.
B.They do harm to fabric.
C.They improve water quality.
D.They are bad for the environment.
10.What can we know from the team's experiment
A.We should wash clothes as often as possible.
B.We must spend more time in washing clothes.
C.We'd better use cool water when washing clothes.
D.We need a proper washing machine when washing clothes.
11.What is the best title for the text
A.Wash Quickly, Spend Less
B.Wash Properly, Pollute Less
C.The Research on Microfibers
D.The Way to Prevent Clothes Fading
Briefly, music puts you in high spirits, which makes you better at studying - but it also distracts you, which makes you worse at studying. So if you want to study effectively with music on, you can try to reduce how distracting music can be, and increase the level to which music keeps you cheerful.
You may have heard of the Mozart effect -- the idea that listening to Mozart makes you “smarter”, which is based on research that found listening to complex classical music like Mozart improved test scores in mathematics. However, further research eventually debunked the Mozart effect theory: it had not really anything to do with maths; it was really just music that puts you in high spirits.
However, music can be a distraction under certain circumstances. When you study, you’re using your “working memory”--- that means you’re holding and handling several bits of information in your head immediately. The research is fairly clear that when there’s music in the background, especially music with vocals (歌唱 部分),your working memory gets worse. Likely as a result, the reading comprehension ability is reduced when people listen to music with lyrics. Music also appears to be more distracting for people who are introverts (内向的人)than for people who are extroverts, perhaps because introverts are more easily overexcited.
Aiming to figure out the relative effect of these two competing factors — spirits and distraction, researchers had participants do a fairly demanding comprehension task, and listen to classical music which was either slow or fast, and which was either soft or loud. They found poor performances only occurred when people were listening to music that was both fast and loud.
To sum up, research suggests it’s probably fine to listen to music while you’re studying. But you’d better consider if the music puts you in high spirits, if it’s neither too fast nor too loud, if it’s less wordy, and if you’re not too introverted.
12.What does the underlined word “debunked” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Disapproved. B.Developed. C.Examined. D.Proposed.
13.Which of the following can affect our working memory more seriously
A.Rapid rap music. B.Background music.
C.Fast piano music. D.Soft absolute music.
14.What can be inferred from the text
A.Spirits are vital to task performances.
B.Slow music can easily lead to distraction.
C.Fast and loud music isn’t fit for comprehension tasks.
D.Soft music is more suitable to introverts than extroverts.
15.What does the text mainly talk about
A.The right choices of music while studying.
B.The benefits of listening to music while studying.
C.The main ways of enjoying music while studying.
D.The influences of listening to music while studying.

If you love chocolate, maybe you have eaten a bar of Cadbury's Bournville chocolate. But Bournville isn't just the name of an English chocolate bar. It's the name of a village which was built especially for workers at the Cadbury's chocolate factory.
George and Richard Cadbury took over the chocolate business from their father in 1861. A few years later, they moved the factory out of the centre of Birmingham, a city in the middle of England, to an area close to the railways and canals so that they could receive milk deliveries easily and send the finished products to stores across the country. More importantly, here, the air was much cleaner than in the city, and the Cadbury brothers thought it would be a much healthier place for their employees to work.
They named the site Bournville after a local river called "The Bourn" and "Ville", the French word for town, was used because at the time, people thought French chocolate was the highest quality. The new factory opened in 1879. Close to it, they built a village where the factory workers could live. The Cadbury brothers thought their workers deserved to live and work in good conditions. In the factory, workers were given a fair wage, a pension and access to medical treatment. The village provided everything that workers needed including a shop, a school and a community centre where evening classes were held to train young members of the workforce.
The Cadbury brothers were among the first business owners to make sure that their workers had good standards of living. Soon, other British factory owners were copying their ideas by providing homes and communities for their workers designed with convenience and health in mind.
Today, over 25,000 people live in Bournville village. Over a hundred years since the first house here was built, the aims of its founders have still been carried out.

The Tour de France is a very difficult bike race. It lasts over three weeks and covers 3,351 kilometers. Every day, the riders finish a different part of the race, called a "stage". Every stage can have a different winner, and each day, the total time is added up. The person who is leading wears a yellow shirt to show that they are winning. But there're no women in the Tour de France, only men. From 1984 to 2009, there was a women's Tour de France. But over time, the event grew smaller and less challenging. In 2009, it ended completely.
The Tour de France is organized by Amaury Sport Organization(ASO). In 2014, ASO began holding a shorter one or two-day race for women called La Course. But it is by no means a long and challenging race with many stages.
To call attention to the need for a women's Tour de France, a French cycling club has taken or an unusual project called “J-I". As part of J-1, since 2015,a group of women has been riding the exact same course as the men's Tour de France, just one day earlier.
Women won't have to take part in the J-I project in 2022 because ASO has announced that in July of 2022 , they'll be holding the Tour de France Femmes(TDFF)—a Tour de France for women.
It'll be an eight-day race with many stages, which will kick off as soon as the men's Tour de France comes to an end. That's likely to help attract viewers. In the past, the women's race was held just before or during the men's race. Now, all the people who have finished watching the men's race and are still looking for some racing excitement will have a chance to tune in for the women's race.
Christian Prudhomme, who organizes the Tour de France says that earlier versions of the women's Tour de France lost money. This time, they are hoping to set the race up in a way that it'll make money, allowing the event to continue.

On November 18, 2021, the world's first self-driving, electric container ship made its first trip to Oslo. Norway. The ship's owners aim to cut pollution by moving large amounts of products by water on the southern coast of Norway instead of by truck.
The ship called Yara Birkeland is owned by Yara, a company that makes fertilizer (肥料). The company wanted to develop a zero-emissions (零排放) ship that was completely autonomous though it might cause financial troubles. Yara worked with a ship-building company called Vard and the technology company Kongsberg to develop the ship. Yara Birkeland is a container ship that can carry 120 large containers like those pulled by trucks. But the ship is fully electric and is powered by batteries.
Now, with Yara Birkeland moving huge amounts of fertilizer by water, the company expects to cut out 40,000 yearly trips by diesel (柴油) powered trucks, which will prevent about 1 million kilograms of carbon emissions every year.
In the future, Yara Birkeland is expected to operate completely automatically. Yara plans to spend the next two years training and testing the ship. But, as with many autonomous cars, the ship will continue to have humans watching out from a base on land even once the ship is driving fully by itself, says Svein Tore Holsether, Yara's president.
Many predicaments are waiting for Yara Birkeland. It'll be moving in a narrow waterway called a fjord. It' ll have to learn to handle the changing movements of water. It'll need to pass under two bridges and avoid all the other traffic on the busy fjord. Finally, it'll have to stop safely at the port in Brevik, one of the busiest ports in Norway. The company hopes that all of these will be settled in the near future.

Carson Kropfl, 11, came up with his idea because no company sold what he wanted. “Everything else fits into my locker (柜子) —my books, my bag, my lunch—but not my skateboard,” he said. So in 2013, Carson broke the nose and tail off a full-size skateboard to make a locker-size board.
At the time, Carson was saving for surfing lessons. His mom, Carrie, told him he needed to do that on his own. He decided to sell the boards at school. For months, he sold them during lunch for $20 each, until he’d saved $1, 000 for lessons. After hitting his financial goal, Carson realized he liked running a business. But he needed start-up capital. Again, his mom said he had to find a way to get it himself. “So that’s exactly what he set out to do,” Carrie says. Carson approached the company Vans to see if he could get some of their used skateboards for free. Vans set up a recycling program for him, and started giving him 50 used boards per month.
Carson first applied for Shark Tank in 2013. The producers turned him down because his company wasn’t big enough. But every six months, he checked in with the producers again. In 2017, they finally said yes. At the shoot, Carson made his pitch (陈述), with the help of his mom. Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Records, Virgin Airlines and hundreds of other companies decided to invest (投资). Since then, Carson has sold more than 1, 000 boards. His company has grown more than 300%. He plans to expand to Canada, the U. K. , and Australia. He credits his mom, who has her own title at Locker Board: Chief Mom Officer. When a piece of art work is sold, information about who bought it and who sold it and also where it was sold, is usually recorded. If a work of art has no such information with it, then there is a good chance that it’s a forged(伪造)one.
Although there are many ways to detect forged art, it can still be a very difficult task for experts. Forgers know a lot about the artists and the materials that he or she used. They are very careful about painting exactly in the artist’s style. Yet experts continue to develop new technology to help fight forgery. For instance, scientists are now using the digital code from computer images, which can show the artist’s digital “fingerprint”. The digital fingerprint can give scientists specific information about the pressure, angle or thickness of the original artist’s strokes(笔画)of the brush. Some people today believe that there are almost as many forged works of art as original ones. However, with technology continuing to improve, it will surely become far more difficult for a forger to fool art experts.
Art can tell us about our own and other cultures and provide us with a valuable record of human history. While many great artists have borrowed ideas and been influenced by those before them, they have often taken these ideas and changed them into something that is fresh and new and originally theirs. Forgers are not expressing their own original ideas at all.
An original work of art has something a forged piece will never have. It has the touch, the feelings, the interpretation(诠释)of its creator and this is what gives it its mark of originality. It could be like comparing fresh flowers with artificial ones. Artificial flowers might have the same color, design, shape and look of real flowers in every way. Yet, examine them closer. Do they have the same feel

For people who are unable to speak, signals of what they’d like to say hide in their brains. No one has been able to understand those signals directly. But researchers recently made progress in turning data from electrodes (电极) surgically placed on the brain into computer-made speech. Using computer models known as neural (神经) networks (NN), they reconstructed words and sentences that were, in some cases, understandable to human listeners.
People who have lost the ability to speak after a disease can use their eyes or make other small movements to select on-screen letters just like what Stephen Hawking did, but that was extremely inconvenient. But if NN could re-create their speech directly, they might regain much more: for example, the ability to cut in a fast-moving conversation.
The hurdles are high. “We are trying to work out the pattern of neurons that turn on and off at different time points, and infer the speech sounds,” says Nima Mesgarani, a computer scientist at Columbia University. “The mapping from one to the other is not straightforward at all.” How these signals translate to speech sounds varies from person to person, so computer models must be “trained” on each single patient. So you can imagine the work!
The network of Mesgarani’s team analyzed data from five patients who heard recordings of stories and people naming numbers from zero to nine. The computer then reconstructed spoken numbers from neural data alone; when the computer “spoke” the numbers, a group of listeners named them with 75% accuracy. Neurosurgeon Edward Chang reconstructed entire sentences from brain activity caught from speech and motor areas while three patients raised their voice and read. In an online test, 166 people heard one of the sentences and had to select it from among 10 written choices. Some sentences were correctly identified more than 80% of the time. The researchers also pushed the model further: They used it to re-create sentences from data recorded while people silently mouthed words. “That’s an important result—one step closer to the speech prosthesis (假肢) that we all have in mind,” one of the researchers said.
12.What did researchers rely on to understand the patients’ speech better
A.Eye movements. B.On-screen letters.
C.NN computer models. D.Patient-computer conversations.
13.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 mean
A.The job to build patients’ NN models is hard.

Song Chunfang still remembers his teacher Yuan Longping, known as the “father of hybrid rice,” telling them to speed up the promotion of hybrid rice in Madagascar before their trip to the country in October 2020.
Yuan Longping, famous for developing the first high-yield hybrid rice strain capable of eliminating (消灭) hunger for large numbers of people, died of organ failure at 91 on May 22, 2021.
In April 1979, Yuan presented his paper to an international academic conference on hybrid rice in Manila, sharing China's experience in hybrid rice research with the rest of the world. Over four decades, research teams working on hybrid rice have been promoting the technology overseas. So far, Yuan's hybrid rice has been grown in more than 60 countries, with a total growing area of 8 million hectares (公顷) outside China, according to the China National Hybrid Rice R&D Center where Yuan worked.
Established in Madagascar in 2019, the African sub-center is the only overseas sub-center of China's national hybrid rice engineering technology research center, and it is functioning well. Chinese experts in the sub-center set up a service chain including providing seeds, relevant training and technical guidance. More than 100 skilled local trainees were given online courses to become hybrid rice experts who can better serve the needs of local farmers. So far, the sub-center has approved three hybrid rice varieties in Madagascar, with two other varieties suitable for growing in most regions of the country expected to gain approval this year.

One of Britain’s few typical contributions to world culture may come to an end, according to a survey that suggests holiday postcards are being emailed and texted into extinction (消亡). More than half of the 1,000 holiday-makers interviewed said they had decided to send fewer cards, turning instead to their electronic competitors.
A quarter of the respondents (受访者) dismissed postcards as old-fashioned and slow to arrive. A further 14% admitted that thinking of something to fill the space was too challenging, compared with a call home. Although officially invented by a Hungarian, Emanuel Herrmann, in 1869, the idea of illustrated cards was taken up with most enthusiasm in Victorian Britain, joining Gothic architecture and landscape gardening as fields in which the country excelled.
“If the British postcard did become extinct, we would lose for ever something of great importance to the nation,” said Chris Mottershead of Thomson Holidays, which charged with the survey. He was backed by Marie Angelou of Sussex University, who has studied the importance of sending and receiving postcards. “Postcards are nothing like phone calls, instant texting and direct photo shots via the mobile,” she said. “All these are useful, practical devices, but postcards offer something else, something additional that is not mundane (世俗的) and simply functional, but imaginative and personal. They can produce the real atmosphere of your holiday in a way that nothing else can do. They’re also for more than a moment — with some people adding them to collections built up over years and years.”
Postcard-collecting, is third only to coins and stamps in Britain’s related tradition of collecting things. The country’s uniquely postcard-related achievements include the invention in 1902 of the“divided back”. With the address taking up half of the writing area, brief postcard scribbles (潦草的书写) became the forerunner to today’s text messages.
8.What does the survey suggest
A.Postcards are being emailed to people. B.Fewer people care about holidays.
C.Postcards are now less preferred. D.Paper cards are people’s favorite.
9.What does the underlined phrase “was taken up with most enthusiasm” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Gained popularity. B.Took place. C.Came back. D.Went into service.
10.What does Marie Angelou think of postcards
A.Postcards are not as effective as phone calls. B.Postcards send information much more quickly.
C.Postcards should give way to text messages. D.Postcards carry more than what they show.
11.What is the best title for the text
A.Last Post for Britain’s Card Habit B.Time for A Change
C.Britain: Dreamland for Postcards D.Fall of A Great Power
Human societies depend on healthy ecosystems (生态系统). People use their products in the shape of fish, meat, crops and fibers such as cotton and silk. Medicines may be directly harvested from the natural world or inspired by molecules (分子) and elements found within it. Through light reaction, trees and other plants take in carbon and pump out oxygen.
The services that ecosystems provide to humans depend, in turn, on there being a diversity of living things. More than 75% of global food-crop types, including coffee, cocoa and almonds, are pollinated (授粉) by animals. The complex web supporting every food chain and ecosystem means that the narrow range of species that humans eat and exploit cannot be sustained (维持) without the existence of a much greater diversity of animals, plants and bacteria.
When IPBES published its assessment of the state of global biodiversity in 2019, it offered a sobering picture. Roughly 1 million animal and plant species were considered to be at risk of extinction. These included many that are used in farming. At least 9% of the 6,200 sorts of house-trained mammals that humans eat, or use to produce food, had become extinct by 2016, and at least 1,000 more are threatened. And one-third of ocean fish stocks were being unsustainably exploited in 2015.
Surveys also show that the loss of biodiversity is the result of a combination of factors: climate change, pollution, human exploitation of land, sea, plants and animals, and the movement of some species into new territories where they destroy existing ecosystems.
Understanding a problem, however, is a necessary step towards solving it. And that is where technology can help. Ironically (讽刺地), it is humans’ use of technology, whether in simple forms such as chainsaws (链锯) or dragnets, or more complex ones such as modern agriculture and transportation, that is chiefly responsible for biodiversity loss. The challenge now is to arrange it so that it is not just part of the problem, but part of the solution.
12.What does paragraph 1 try to tell
A.Great success achieved by human societies. B.People’s role in reconstructing the ecosystems.
C.People’s wisdom and experience in exploiting nature. D.Benefits brought by ecosystems to human societies.
13.In paragraph 2, the author tries to explain the relationship between________.
A.humans and ecosystems B.ecosystems and biodiversity
C.animals and food chain D.biodiversity and resources
14.What does the underlined word “sobering” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Saddening. B.Comprehensive. C.Concrete. D.Thorough.
15.Which of the following will the author probably agree
A.We need to rid technology to promote biodiversity.
B.Loss of biodiversity is simply related to human activities.
C.Technology is double-edged when it comes to biodiversity.
D.Climate change poses greater risks than loss of biodiversity.

12.词义猜测题。根据文章第二段第一句破折号后的句子“listening to Mozart makes you “smarter”, which is based on research that found listening to complex classical music like Mozart improved test scores in mathematics.”( 听莫扎特音乐会让你“更聪明”基于一项研究发现,该发现认为听莫扎特这样复杂的古典音乐会提高数学考试成绩),和划线词所在句子和最后一句“However, further research eventually debunked the Mozart effect theory: it had not really anything to do with maths; it was really just music that puts you in high spirits.”(然而,进一步的研究最终debunk了莫扎特效应理论:它实际上与数学无关;这真的只是让你精神振奋的音乐)中的however可知,上下文为转折关系,由此推知,划线词之后的理论与莫扎特理论相反,故划线词意思是“反对,不赞成”,与Disapproved符合。故选A。
13.细节理解题。根据第三段倒数第二句“ Likely as a result, the reading comprehension ability is reduced when people listen to music with lyrics.”(结果可能是,当人们听有歌词的音乐时,阅读理解能力会降低),和文章倒数第二段最后一句“They found poor performances only occurred when people were listening to music that was both fast and loud.”(他们发现,只有当人们在听既快又大声的音乐时,才会出现糟糕的表现)可知,会更严重地影响我们的工作记忆的是:快速的说唱音乐。故选A。
14.推理判断题。根据第四段第二句开始“researchers had participants do a fairly demanding comprehension task, and listen to classical music which was either slow or fast, and which was either soft or loud. They found poor performances only occurred when people were listening to music that was both fast and loud.”(研究人员让参与者做一项要求相当高的理解任务,听慢或快、柔和或大声的古典音乐。他们发现,只有当人们在听既快又大声的音乐时,才会出现糟糕的表演)推知,快速而响亮的音乐不适合理解任务。故选C。
15.主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Briefly, music puts you in high spirits, which makes you better at studying - but it also distracts you, which makes you worse at studying. So if you want to study effectively with music on, you can try to reduce how distracting music can be, and increase the level to which music keeps you cheerful.”(简言之,音乐会让你情绪高涨,这会让你学习更好,但它也会分散你的注意力,这会让你学习更差。因此,如果你想有效地学习音乐,你可以试着减少音乐的干扰,提高音乐让你快乐的程度)可知课文主要讲的是:学习时音乐的正确选择。故选A。
