Can trees talk Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do talk with each other.
Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked (袭击) in the woods by caterpillars (毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves, and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more surprisingly, the tree sent out a special smell—a signal (信号) causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.
“Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in words.” John Bright, another researcher from America, said to Teens. “We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending message ” He added.

Rainforests cover 6% of the earth’s surface. Some are high in the mountains and others are near the sea. They are important places for thousands of animals. Many of them live in the trees, over 30 meters from the ground. There are also thousands of different plants and lots of tall trees.
The rainforests are very important to us. They are the lungs (肺) of the earth. The plants in the forests help to make the air fresher and cleaner. They also help to control the weather. They give us wood, fruit, medicine and so on. We need the rainforests very much.
However, the world’s rainforests are getting smaller and smaller because people have cut down many trees to plant coffee, sugar cane or to get wood. Many people also lost their homes, and thousands of animals and plants disappeared.
Some scientists say that there won’t be any rainforests in 20 or 30 years if we don’t give up destroying them. All of us should protect rainforests.
31.Rainforests cover a little of the earth’s surface but they are very important for us.
32.In rainforests, all animals live on the ground.
33.The plants in rainforests help clean the air.
34.The rainforests are getting smaller because the weather is getting drier.

五、阅读回答问题
Answer the questions(根据以下内容回答问题)
Some animals help humans. For example, specially trained dogs help blind people walk around the town safely. Some kinds of monkeys can be taught things too. They can learn how to help people who can’t use their arms or legs. The monkeys pick up the phone when it rings, carry shopping bags and do housework.
In the wild, animals and humans are not usually friends, but there are a few interesting examples where they can work together. In Africa, the honey guide bird works with humans to find food. The bird likes to eat the grubs (幼虫)—a type of insect that lives inside a beehive (蜂窝). It knows how to find beehives but it can’t open them and get the grubs. People like to eat honey, but they aren’t very good at finding beehives, so the bird and the people help each other. The bird flies to a beehive and people follow it. When the people open the beehive and take the honey, they give the grubs to the bird.
In Laguna in the south of Brazil, fishermen and dolphins (海豚) work as a team. The ocean isn’t very clean, so the fishermen can’t see the fish. However, dolphins can find them easily by using sounds. When the dolphins find a large group of fish, they make a noise to tell the fishermen. Then the dolphins push the fish to the beach. The fishermen wait in the water near the beach and catch a lot of fish in their nets. The fishermen’s nets make it easier for the dolphins to catch fish too. In Laguna, fishermen and dolphins have been working together for many years. The fishermen teach their children how to work with the dolphins. The dolphins must be happy to help because they teach their babies how to work with the humans!

十一、讲稿
Dear students,
I am glad to talk about the topic of the class meeting — protect the elephants. Elephants are the largest mammals on land. They can live as long as 80 years. However, these years the number of elephants is becoming much smaller, because people cut down forests and elephants are losing their homes. Also, people kill them for ivory. In a word, elephants are in great danger.
I think we should try our best to protect them. First, we should help make rules to stop people from killing elephants. Second, we shouldn’t cut down trees. Third, we shouldn’t buy anything made of ivory.
I think we should play a part in protecting the elephants and helping them have a safe and comfortable home.
That’s all. Thanks a lot.
