An abacus, also called a counting frame, was first used by the Asians for showing arithmetic processes( 计算过程). It was in use centuries before the invention of the written modern system of numbers. And it was widely used by merchants and clerks in ancient China, Japan, Africa, India and elsewhere. Nowadays, the abacus often has a wooden frame with beads on the wires. The user of an abacus is called an abacist, who calculates by sliding the beads of the abacus by hand.
It is said that the abacus was invented in 550 BC in China. The use of the word “abacus” first appeared before 1387. Its plural is abacuses.
A new kind of abacus was found on the island of Salamis (near Greece) in 1846. It may be the oldest counting board discovered so far.
As computers and mobile phones appeared, people began to pay less attention to abacuses. Most young people don’t even know how to use them. I think they will die out in a few years. It will be a great pity.

四、阅读判断
根据短文内容判断下列句子的正(A) 误(B)。
In China, everyone seems to know about antibiotics(抗生素). When you have a cold, you go to see a doctor. The doctor may give you some antibiotics. It’s true that antibiotics can cure your disease, but too many antibiotics are not good for your body.
Antibiotics were first used in the 1940s. They worked well and were called “the wonder drugs”. “But now, antibiotics have become a threat to human lives,” said a report by the UK government. “Our bodies are developing a resistance(抵抗) to antibiotics, and 10 million people across the world will die of this by 2025.”
How come the wonder drugs are now killers In our bodies, there are two types of bacteria(细菌). Some are good for our health and others cause diseases. Antibiotics are used to destroy the bad ones. But it’s usually a long battle. Antibiotics may win this time, but bacteria don’t give up. They soon learn new skills to fight back. Then our body needs more antibiotics to win. And the battle goes on. As a result, we’re seeing more “superbugs”, or bacteria that can’t be killed by antibiotics.
In China, patients use too many antibiotics. Antibiotics make up 70 percent of the country’s Drug production. Sometimes patients don’t need to use antibiotics. If patients take too many antibiotics, there will be more “superbugs”. So, don’t take antibiotics for some common diseases, for example, colds and flu.
30.Antibiotics aren’t good for our body at all.
31.Ten million people across the world will die of antibiotics by 2025.
32.In our bodies, there are some good and bad bacteria.
33.If a patient uses too many antibiotics, his or her body will need fewer antibiotics to fight against bacteria in the future.
34.The writer advises us not to use too many antibiotics.

Enough Sleep Could Reduce Risk of Injury
A new study suggests that enough sleep is necessary and important for people.
The researchers found that people who got no more than four to five hours of sleep a night were easier to be hurt than those who slept eight hours or longer.
Compared to those who slept eight hours or more each night, people who slept less than seven hours were more likely to experience a musculoskeletal(骨骼) injury(伤害).
The risk climbed as the hours of sleep dropped, with a 53-percent greater injury risk at six hours of sleep. The study notes that getting enough rest could be a better way to reduce injury risk.
Dr. Hohui Wang is in the University of California, San Francisco. He said that getting too little sleep leads people to be more likely to get hurt. So getting extra sleep might help.
Most people are healthiest and perform their best with seven to nine hours of sleep a night, said Captain Jeffrey Osgood.
Osgood said, “The less we sleep, the worse we perform in everyday life.” So he offered suggestions for how people can get more – and better-quality(质量) – sleep.
“Please avoid coffee and exercise before sleeping; it’s a better way to keep your bedroom dark and quiet. What’s more, please keep your phone out of bed.

An Exciting Trip
Today is the year of 2050. Our school organized a great trip to Mars a few days ago.
We went to the Mars by spaceship. On Mars we visited everywhere. We found a lot of things different from our earth, such as big stones which can speak. It’s amazing.
After that, we had a party. Many aliens took an active part in the party. Their songs were very nice.
Finally, we made phone calls with aliens. We all have a good time on Mars.
The trip was very interesting and I will never forget the trip. I hope to travel to the Mars again soon.
