Jerry is a world-famous mountain climber. He has climbed many high mountains in the world. Starting in 2015, he and his friends spent two years on an adventure(探险)in South America, covering 7,800 miles. He was even named Adventure of the Year by a famous geography magazine in 2018.
Although Jerry had achieved great success, he didn’t feel fulfilled. He asked himself, “Is it enough to climb the highest mountains Am I doing something helpful How can I turn my adventures into something that can help the world ”
Jerry learned that scientists need plants, rocks and water samples(样本)from the places far away to do research. But scientists can’t get there themselves as such places are hard to reach——only the bravest adventurers can make it. Jerry thought himself could do something to help. He then came up with an idea. He set up a team of top adventures to collect samples for scientists. By studying the samples, scientists could know more about the earth and find ways to protect it.
Recently Jerry and his adventurer friends have discovered a special plant life of Mountain Qomolangma. The samples they brought back have helped scientists how plants live in extreme(极端的)conditions.
For Jerry, this kind of adventure is most satisfying. “Such adventures had made us see life in a different way. Now, being the best climber isn’t important for me, what matters is doing something helpful while climbing the mountains. There is still much more we can do.” Jerry said to a newspaper.

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics were more than a sporting event. They were also a show for science and technology. They are helping athletes (运动员) become “faster, higher, stronger” and offering you a great game-watching experience with the support of 5G. Let’s look at some technologies behind the Beijing Winter Olympics.
The fastest ice
The National Speed Skating Oval is said to have “the fastest ice”, as 12 new Olympic records and one world record were set there. The secret is new ice-making technology. Liquid carbon dioxide (液体二氧化碳) is put under the ice to keep temperature changes on the ice surface in half a degree. That keeps the ice a level surface and it is easier to skate on.
“Seeing” the wind
In events like freestyle skiing and ski jumping, the direction and speed of the wind can have great influence on an athlete’s performance. A Chinese research team developed a system to measure wind. The system uses AI technology. It allows athletes and coaches to “see” wind with real-time data (数据) on their
High-speed cameras
During the speed skating race, athletes can reach speeds of up to 18 meters per second. To catch every exciting moment of the competition, Lie Bao has been used for the event.
Lie Bao, is a 4K high-definition (高清) camera system developed by China Media Group (CMG). It can record speeds of up to 25 meters per second. It closely follows the athletes' movements and catches different scenes during speed skating, according to Shanghai Plus.

Exercise 2
(2022·广东中山·一模)
Nuclear(核)power’s danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word: radiation(辐射).
Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery(神秘)about it, partly because it cannot be found by human senses. It can’t be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can’t detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can’t sense radioactivity without a radiation detector(探测器). But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things.
At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being completely by killing masses(块;团)of cells(细胞)in vital(=very important)organs. But even the lowest level of radiation can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed completely, your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in a deformed(畸形)way. They can grow into cancer(癌症). Sometimes this does not show up for many years.
This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the victim(牺牲者)being aware at the time that damage has occurred. A person can feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak or easy to have serious illness as a result of radiation absorbed(吸收)by its grandparents.
Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.
( ) 1.Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery because ________.
A.people can’t feel it B.people know nothing about it
C.nuclear radiation isn’t harmful to people D.people haven’t any detectors
( ) 2.What can we know from the passage
A.We can’t detect radioactivity even with modern equipment.
B.Only radiation at very high levels can kill an animal or human being.
C.If a few cells are only damaged, healthy cells will take the place of dead ones.
D.Radiation is harmful no matter what level it is.
( ) 3.The word “significant” in paragraph 3 has the similar meaning with ________.
A.important B.meaningful C.harmful D.obvious
( ) 4.Radiation can hurt us in that it can ________.
A.affect the healthy growth of our offspring(后代)
B.damage cells which grow into cancer years later
C.kill large number of cells in main organs so as to cause death immediately
D.all of the above
( ) 5.What’s the author’s main purpose in writing this passage
A.Emphasizing the importance of protection of radiation. B.Solving the mystery about radiation.
C.Discussing the cause of cancer. D.Introducing the nuclear power.

Do you know 5G It is the fifth generation(代)of mobile network technology. These new networks are coming.
China just issued commercial licenses(发放商用牌照)for 5G on June 6, 2019. This means that China's telecom companies will be able to offer 5G networks for mobile phone users.
Each mobile network generation is faster and more powerful than the one before it. 1G let us talk to each other. 2G let us send messages. 3G gave us data(数据)and the Internet. And 4G made all of these things faster. What's special about 5G
5G has a very short delay between sending and receiving information. Now, 4G takes about 100 to 200 milliseconds(毫秒)to send and receive data. But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond or less-this is almost real-time.
'This big change will not only make our mobile Internet faster, but also deeply change our lives. Read on to find out how.
5G + entertainment(娱乐)
5G networks are about 100 times faster than 4G. This means you can download a movie in seconds using 5G.
Also, virtual reality(VR)games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real.
5G + transport
5C will also bring us safer self-driving cars. These cars can send signals(信号)to each other. They also talk to traffic lights and road sensors(传感器). 5G will allow cars to react(反应)even faster than human drivers.
5G + smart homes
5G also makes the Internet of things possible. Internet of things is a large network that connects everything to the Internet. Smart homes are part of it.
For example, your toaster can automatically(自动地)start making breakfast after your alarm rings. And if its sensor feels the air becoming dry, a smart sprinkler(洒水器)could water your plants by itself.
( ) 1.What's the writer's purpose in writing the third paragraph
A.To explain 5G is the best of all.
B.To share his knowledge about 5G.
C.To encourage people to use the new network technology.
D.To show the development of mobile network technology.
