Period Two 中小学生是否应当帮助家长干家务是世界各国教育界讨论的热门话题之一。在美国，大多数的孩子都有家务活清单。父母们认为，孩子参与做家务，不仅仅是为了减轻父母的负担，更重要的是：可以让孩子们更好地体验自己是家庭一员的感觉，从小培养孩子的独立性和责任心。根据年龄大小，他们分别设计了适合不同阶段孩子的家务活，比如：9-24个月，自己扔尿布……2-4岁，扔垃圾、整理玩具、浇花、喂宠物……5-7岁，铺床、摆餐具、擦桌子、收拾房间……8-12岁，做简单的饭、清理洗手间、使用洗衣机……13岁以上，换灯泡、做饭、洗衣、修剪草坪……在英美等西方发达国家的一些中产家庭中，不少家长给做好家务劳动的孩子发“工钱”，以此来激励孩子参与家务劳动。孩子在几毛钱几块钱的鼓励下把被动劳动变成主动劳动。随着年龄增长，他们逐渐学会体谅父母，也知道了自己在家庭中应当有所担当，懂得不劳而获是不对的。
哈佛大学的教育学者曾对400多名学生长期跟踪调查，发现美国小学生每日平均劳动1.2小时。更值得我们参考及反思的是，他们得出结论：爱做家务的孩子与不爱做的相比,长大后失业率为1：15，犯罪率为1：10,平均收入高出20％，此外，离异率、心理疾病患病率也比较低。
总而言之，孩子帮助家长从事适当的家务劳动可以增强责任感，培养动手能力和观察能力，有利于家庭成员间的理解和沟通。Skimming
